Fantastic & helpful video. Being new to Foamies, when I finally realized the Control Hinges are actually a thin strip of Foam all molded into the Wing, Elevator, etc., I was Shocked ! now I feel better that they can be fixed by your Method. Thanks very much !

Funny you should ask! Yes, I am putting the video together now... I worked on it a lot today.... I have lots of good & necessary upgrades for it... It is my favorite so far of the 1400mm FMS line.... it is shaped like a bullet and flys like a rocket! I hope to get it out in a few days :)

Rich, While I have done this repair myself I always follow up with hinge tape top and bottom. Maybe belt and suspender approach, however, I tend to follow the ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure approach. It really just comes down to peace of mind I guess. I have never had a repaired hinge come apart but I would hate to find out in a high stress maneuver. I also inspect my hinges from time to time to ensure their are no signs of fatigue. You are correct when you say the FoamTac is a great glue for foam planes.

yes, that's not a bad idea:) In fact, FMS has started to do this on some of their newer planes.... However, if the hinge is good it will often tear off clean in a crash. On the other hand, making it stronger could cause more damage than just a clean tear in the instance of the same crash...

Excellent video Rich. Hope I can buy a similar glue here in Aus. I tried one product a clear shoe repair glue but it goes a bit yellow after a day or too. Cheers Stew ....

Hi Rich, I live in central Florida and found that using welders glue becomes brittle after a while from the humidity and ultra violet affects from the strong sun. Now i am using canopy glue which stays flexible and does not become brittle.

if your short on tape, u can just use a piece of paper as a strap and just use a tiny piece of tape to hold the strap together. but a very nice tip! i was previously just using the stick side of the tape but i was always risking lifting the paint. i like this "cigar rolling" method

Would you recommend the welders glue to build the enter plane vs the contact cement supplied with the kit? I've normally have used epoxy.

Seeing you coated the repaired hinge with the welder's glue, would you say it would be ok to give existing foam hinges a similar coat as a preemptive measure and also to reinforce existing foam hinges?

Not sure, but it is a "contact cement" that stays somewhat flexible, some similar contact cement may work.....

Mega handy vid! I have also been testing UHU POR with this technique and it seems to be pretty damn strong so i would say that would be a good alternative And i have to say you sound a lot like Nicholas Cage!haha

hi bought a sbarch and to my surprise the ailerons and elevator where bowed quite badley,and they had hing tape on aswell,so I peeled that of and the ailerons and elevator came straight away,,any good tip for straightening them out thx mark..

wish I had seen this before repairing with plastic hinges will remember and will buy some Welders glue

I found welder on amazon, ordered it. The pic showed it in red tubes. When it arrived the welder was in white tubes. Will the welder in the white tubes work the same as the welder in the red tubes? It says it's clear for interior/exterior, waterproof industrial strength adhesive for home repair, permanently bonds seals and repairs-all purpose.

I couldn't find Welder in Canada, any idea of another glue like Welder?

I'm modding my Taft viper jet for high speed with a new edf unit. I'm repairing cracks in the hinges, but I'd also like to strengthen the hinges while I'm at it. Would I just do the same with the glue over the hinge and spread it with a credit card?

Another great tip. Check Lowes first. Some HD's don't carry Welders.

it can be used in many instances but, epoxy is slightly better for gluing larger areas because it is easier to remove the excess glue and you ultimately get a cleaner finished plane... contact cements like welder and the stuff you get with many kits are strong enough but often they ruin the paint finish if you apply to much glue.... you cant wipe off the excess like you can with epoxy....

Grate video I have just purchased my first epo plane from hobby king. The instructions were little to none I found these little things that look like hinges made of plastic. Do I need to put these on looks like there is about 15 of them. Also do I need to worry about limiting my tx to not put to much strain on the joints. Thanks in advance for any info as this foam is new to me.

Rcinformer or anyone... please help. What can I do to fix my Planes elevator and ailerons that are breaking away from the hinges at the corners making it extremely difficult for me to get them level enough to fly? I have a 880mm Corsair. It's my first low wing. I've never flown a low wing. First attempt I got up a few feet, and it dove to the left flipped and crashed. I know it's the models issue, not necessarily the servos. I tried and tried to get them level, but the left Alieron's hinge is broken a little nearest the fuse and it sits lower giving the illusion the servos are not set correctly. Same with the elevator. Hope I didn't over explain too much. Any ideas? I'd hate to rip it off and try reattaching the entire thing, can I fix it otherwise?

hey rich I just got my 1st bottle of foam tac. I was going to use it to make the hinges stronger(mine are not broken) do I apply it just like I would with welders just use a small brush and lightly smooth over hinges yes?

I just use clear RTV silicone.

Not sure, I have not used it... as long as it is thin enough to brush on, flexible enough when dry so it does not crack, and as long as it does not melt the foam it should be ok....

fabric hinge bonded in with epoxy is a more reliable and lighter solution. An uncontrolled section of adhesive is not a reliable hinge.

That's not him, that's the plane! it happens to me also! The real 109s were like that. You can make a nice touchdown, but if you are not on cement the rollout is rough....

Nice video, but.... I just can't take this repair seriously! You are proposing to trust my 1000$ of FPV equipment on some GLUE? I guess flying 3d is ok with some generic glue, but I don't want my control surfaces flying off my plane 20 clicks away from me. CA hinges is the best for me in that matter!
