I remember when the first compound bows started showing up at my range, people didn’t like the way they looked, or how they felt, people said they didn’t work? and they were called a gimmick and a fad that wouldn’t last,,,,that was about 50yrs ago give or take. Once again you’ve gone above and beyond, another excellent review.

Bummed I just bought 3 packs recently or I'd grab some with your code. Been using them for about 7 years and this has been the most accurate review I've seen. The other pro that is big for me is that they make traveling easier. You can make your shafts super compact in a tube, and you don't have to worry about vanes getting bent en route. I fly to most of my hunting sites and this is a big plus for me

I add 3m (9ft) of thin neon coloured builders twine, figure 8 knotted behind the hole of threaded insert at business end then inserted and packed inside arrow and then at other end pinched between FOB and nock. That makes it so when FOB pops off there is a bright thread going directly to grounded or bushed arrow. Some times animal will take arrow with them, for a few short steps, into underbrush and you then have a great indicator threaded through their body. This is especially good with dusk/dawn hunting allong with a black light torch to make the neon FOB, nock and twine glow remarkably in the bush (along with the scorpions funnily). One just needs to make the weight/length exactly the same for each arrow and sight in bow with target arrows set up exactly the same.

That's a cool idea! Reminds me of those old string trackers mounted to the bow, but in this case everything is contained and wouldn't affect flight nearly as much.

The idea that my arrow might be even a little harder for me to find seems like a deal breaker. Finding your arrow is such a crucial part of tracking your deer, and the benefits i don't think outweigh that drawback. In the NE Big woods I'm not shooting outside of 30 yards, so i don't know if the wind drift benefit would be worth it. great video, awesome breakdown, very informative.

FOB's age the best thing that has ever hit the archery world. But here is a helpful tip for ya. Rotate the FOB so is ISN'T in line with the broadhead. Think of it like this. You want your vanes (or FOB) to have drag to help stir the arrow. If the FOB is in line with the broadhead, the air stream is disturbed and it cannot have the adequate drag that it needs to obtain better arrow flight. Try this, you'll see a big difference. Great video btw
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 5 жыл бұрын
Until I see wind tunnel testing, I have a hard time imagining turbulence caused by the broadhead has any bearing on what happens at the back end. They are so far apart and the arrow is rotating. I haven't been able to tell any difference in stabilization one way vs another.

Cool vid. I shot FOBS for a few years just because I didn't have the equipment and knowledge of fletching. I did shoot a doe at ground level while walking to my stand and it did just what you said...passed thru, arrow went to who knows where, and the FOB popped off flying some 15 ft away. Never found the deer and never shoot em again. Right now I've learned to fletch and tinkered with different sketches. Settled on 4 fletch target vanes like yours with extreme helical. My arrows fly way better than FOBs ever did.

I've used and loved the fobs. I've never had a better flight out to 90yrds but if you like to shoot grouse in the grass or elk in the brush, it doesn't take much to deflect the arrow.

Just to throw in a real world example of the performance of these. In 2009 i shot a bull elk at 18 yds with my FOB Goldtip Hunter XT arrow. I got a pass through , the FOB dropped right to where he was standing and the arrow went another 10 yds. I was shooting a SLick Trick 100 grain 3 blade, bow was a 2007 Hoyt Vulcan ,27" DL at 65 lbs. The elk went 60 yds and dropped : )

I converted to FOBs about five years ago. No plan to go back any time soon. More stable in flight. Quicker to stabilize. Vastly superior in any kind of cross wind. Regarding sound.....methinks one's bow and string noises are more significant sources about which to be concerned. Made my own nock lights that are superior to what is commercially available. Light stays with the arrow and has enabled me to recover the arrow, AND the FOB + nock post-shot, even after pass-through shots. FOBs are much less expensive than an arrow with an attached broadhead. If I'm going to lose something, I'd rather lose a FOB.

I been at one point addicted to them - they are great for stabilizing a big COC broadhead on, what I now consider, to weak spined arrow. They make a big bend Zwickey Delta fly on a 340 Easton out of my 75lbs compound for 40 yards with fieldpoints. I stopped because they are bridle and this got worse with the age of them back then. This and the price increase as ban in 3D killed them for me. But I keep some still.

The sound is not as loud in front of the arrow rather than behind due to the Doppler effect. It will be louder behind the moving object rather than in front. That is why it seems louder from where you are shooting. The camera seems to pick up the same audio because bit effectively is the same audio.

Kinda funny but I use gold tip knocks on all the arrows I build. They are a couple thousandths larger in diameter then other brand knocks and they fit tighter... Almost to tight in some brands of arrows but ironically not in the hunter xt's lol. So maybe give the gold tip knocks a try I've never had them unintentionally pop off. Guess I've never listened close enough for a whistle they seem pretty quite to me. But I also do a helical offset to my traditional veins and they tend to whizz more so maybe I just ignore it but I'm going to listen more closely now. 👍

Sound: You will have a different sound with different variables -- wind, humidity, etc with any fetching. However I am curious how FOB would sound in a headwind. Keep in mind that the speed of sound is roughly 1125 ft/s. Within 20 yards the bow/arrow release sound will be a bigger factor. Now when guys are shooting long distance, there is where the arrow sound is a factor. Wind drift. I would like to see them in a tunnel in a Bernoulli test and see the that difference. Pass troughs. I shoot fusion vanes and have found them to be fast and accurate. The last two deer have been pass throughs. For me it is awful difficult to find a deer without a lighted nock. If the woods in the fall with rain or wet dew; you have go leaves that are black, red, brown, and dark shades that make up the forest floor. I would not be keen to shoot FOB, if I lose the FOB/nock on a pass through. I would like to see them shot by competitive target archers and get an opinion from them. Overall a great idea and I would pack them because the ease of use.
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 3 жыл бұрын
Agree on your points. I modified mine (separate video) so that they slide overtop of the shaft with an interference fit and leave the lighted nock intact on my arrow after a pass through. I'm always looking for a good way to test true wind drift. All of the ranges around here are wooded enough that you get vary inconsistent results at ground level, and when I do get a wide open crosswind, it always affects my hold so much that it seems to override any results on the arrow fletching configurations. Wind tunnel would be interesting. I've heard some tournaments don't allow them, but whenever I have seen target archers comment on them they either talk about them breaking with groups, providing a larger target for someone to aim at, or facial contact, most of which are irrelevant for hunting with the slip fit mod. One thing I haven't done a ton of testing in is shooting through light grass, like might be encountered on a spot and stalk in the plains type of scenario.

They wouldn't really work well out of a whisker biscuit. They'd either pop off going through, or if they did make it through, there'd be so much contact and drag going through the bristles I'm sure flight might be affected and the bristles would wear out very quickly.

From what I saw in the video the fob's are more visible from the deers perspective. I would think more deer ducking the string at ranges of 30 yards or more. I personally have never arrowed a deer over 15 yards but I'll still have to pass on the fob's just based on their looks, don't like the look of them one tiny bit makes me think more along the lines of a bowfishing arrow over a hunting arrow.

Like shooting a black shaft arrow versus a camo arrow, if the deer can see that it`s too late. Deer see black and white and shades of blue. My cock feather is blue. Not a color you`ll see on a fall colored ground. I`ve been fortunate enough to take a lot of nice deer in my life and always used a blue C. feather. Don`t give up on them yet my friend.
