Hi Thomas, even though this is an older video, I want to thank you for this and other videos you have made about Focal helping me no to automatically dismiss them as being "too bright". But instead to investigate setting them up correctly and in the end being able to surpass the transparency and soundstage of nearly every other speaker brand.

Love this review. Everything you say is what I found with these speakers too. Bass control is extremely tight, fast and textured. Beryllium tweaters provide extreme detail but no harshness when the dac and preamp can deliver the detail needed. Despite the high sensitivity rating they will sound lacking impact in the lower end and therefore bright and unbalanced unless you use powerful power amps with plenty current. I tried with Cyrus 120w power amps and sounded weak and lacking lower end impact. Then I switched to Electrocompaniet 120w amps and omg. Suddenly became one of the best speakers ive ever heard. The bass became tight, balanced, textured and everything forward and supremely detailed. Also great staging. The Cyrus and Electrocompaniet amps have same wattage rating but the difference was night and day. Don't be fooled by sensitivity and wattage ratings. And also, would highly recommend trying Electrocompaniet power (but not pre) amps with Focal speakers - its a marriage made in heaven. In my setup the Focal 1028 are used with: Electrocompaniet AW 120 Luxman da-06 DAC Headroom preamp Win 10 NUC as source using mediamonkey with wasapi drivers.

I recently dropped on a mint used pair.. I have to say they are utterly brilliant and exactly to my taste. Exciting and rediculously detailed but still rich and definitely not bright or sharp. Their qualities aren't as obvious at low volume levels so if you can't listen at normal levels or above something else might be better.

Love your reviews Thomas. You mention Dac, preamps, etc. Can you do a video explained the chain of equipment in an audio set up and what they do; all i know is a Source feeding a preamp, that is feeding an amp, which is deriving the speakers. Where does the Dac fit in here and how does it help? Thank you!!

Hi Thomas, I just got my hands on a set of mint 1028be's and I was hoping you could help me out with a few questions on what could be good gear for these. I am just getting into the audio world and I am not planning on upgrading anything for some years after I purchase the gear. This will be purely a 2 channel system and I plan on streaming music from Tidal through the Node 2i. My question is about what amp would you recommend running with these speakers. I enjoy listening to music such as Celtic Woman with lots of instruments and detail but I also play modern things from electronic music to hip-hop. I will eventually add a sub to boost lower frequencies as well. I was able to get a cheap old Yamaha RX-V630 receiver just so I can power the speakers while I'm waiting to choose what amp to run with these. The person I purchased the speakers from was running them through a Parasound A21 amp and it sounded good but then when I got home and powered them through the RX-V630 they sounded just fine to me as well. What amp would you recommend being on a budget? Will there be a SIGNIFICANT difference getting a better amp or is the old Yamaha enough? I have no problem getting a used amp, especially if I can get a good deal on something. I plan on staying under $1,500. Ideally would even like to be under $1,000. Would greatly appreciate any help and input. -Serge

Thomas, congratulations for the review. I recently listened to the 1028be with an Audio Research Reference 3 preamp paired with an Audio Research VT80se. It was amazing at low to mid level volume but it started to sound very harsh with high volume and also feeling the drivers disconnected to each other like you mentioned in the review. Do you think may be the low wattage of the amplifier (75w) or did you get this result with high power amplifier?
@ThomasAndStereo
@ThomasAndStereo 4 жыл бұрын
I prefer the Kanta over the 1028 because it is less harsh. Could be also break in in your case. Yes, the drivers will feel more integrated with higher power amps and after break in.

I have no experience with your monoblocs and although there is a difference between the 1028 and 926 (which I also did a video on), my philosophy is when you really want to upgrade, don't go up just one level, jump 2 levels. If you really want the 1000 series, a 1038 would be more of a significant upgrade.

Hi Thomas, new to your channel, love the content. I see that you listed the MC 2100 and MC 7100 as your amps here. I am contemplating getting into Mcintosh and those are my two entry options that I can get for affordable price. What would are your opinions on each and which would you recommend for B&W 705 S2 in a small room? Also in I heard that if you run an amp in bridge mode, the SQ isn't as good as the conventional mode. In your experience, has that been true? Thanks for reading.
@ThomasAndStereo
@ThomasAndStereo 6 жыл бұрын
Welcome. The MC7100 lacks punch so I would not recommend it. The MC2100 is smooth and have bass BUT it's not good tight bass, it;s like they turn on the bass control tone volume to max so it's a bit bloated. However, I still REALLY like it as everything else with it outweigh it's con. I don't know if bridge mode affect sound quality but I could not hear it in the MC7100 when I went from stereo to bridge ( I had 2 MC7100 to monobloc them). Even if there is, it's one of those you have to focus really hard to hear. I would absolutely think the B&W 705 will be driven ok with the mcintosh, Sure more power is better with B&W but budget has to be factor in. Check out my Mcintosh video and just jump to the end for the MC2100 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hNF1mtB9mp7YYZs.html

Thomas & Stereo Thanks for the reply Thomas. I have an svs sub to go with my 705s, and planning to do bass management with minidsp, would that help me get around the 2100's shortcoming in the bass? I'll be using a pioneer elite sc-95 with a sabre ES9016 DAC in pure direct mode as a preamp, would I that hold me back on performance? Lastly, I'm debating between the 2100, or the Yaqin tube amp, or the outlaw rr2160 based on your reviews and others, which one would you pick out of the 3?
@ThomasAndStereo
@ThomasAndStereo 6 жыл бұрын
If you look at my mcintosh video, the MC2100 is one of my all time budget favorite amp. Yaqin, make sure you get one that has a lot of watt since the 705 are only 88db. I don't know anything about outlaw but I have their speakers and love them. I doubt they will be as good as the MC2100 in terms of musicality. ALthought the SC95 as a preamp is limited, it is still descent so you can try with it first and move to upgrade if it does not satisfy you. It is still the Eilte class after all.

Great video! When your honest opinion is the 1038 be better then the Aria 948 truly and worth the extra price? The reason I ask is because I have both 948 and the 1038 be and everybody that I know seems to tell me the 10:38 is better obviously because of the Tweeter but to be honest I don't know I think I enjoy the sound better of the ariya's it sounds to me faster little bit more sharp and detail and the mid-range has more mid-range to it any thoughts?the reason I'm asking you this question this is because I think I should probably return and get my money back for the 1038 be because I bought them to be blown away but I'm not really losing anything with the aria

If you look, that sound was achieved with expensive amps and cables. This speakers are miracle, but it really shows the quality of the recording. (Bad recording -> bad sound). I switched to Electra 1038BE after Focal Chorus 716S. I've bought them 2 weeks ago. This is the strongest unit in my HIFI chain right now. The warm sound of my DAC (Topping D50) was good for the Chorus, but I think it suppresses the Electra a bit and makes it dull. It needs the power of my old amplifier Rotel RA-985BX (2x100W, power consumption: 400W), but it could also make a much better sound. But there is no big problem with it, it can be listened to for a long time. I'd like to improve the mid-range and the fine details. Maybe the Yamaha A-S2200’s strong mid-range and a better DAC would throw a lot at it.

@@joshuabrain9751 Yes, that is. I watched lot of test videos. For good sound the electronics cost at least as much as the speaker. I'm sure I'll buy a larger/stronger amplifier (150-200W 8Ohm). The 1028 has the whole soundstage presented behind the speakers as oppose to be more 'upfront' compare to the 926. However, having the soundstage behind the speakers is the higher end presentation. The reason is when it does that well, the speakers will sound like they disappear and that is what you want. The 926 can do that too but the 1028 is absolutely one step higher. For vocals, I would say 926 and 1028 does not have a significant gap but I really need to do an AB test to be 100% sure.

Great review. I agree 100%. I bought the 1028. I first heard them with a couple of cyrus 120w monos and wasnt impressed. I thought they sounded lacking in the lower end and underwhelming. But then paired with a Electrocompaniet aw120 which is also 120w per channel i was blown away. Tight, fast bass. Effortless sound across the entire range. Very sharp imaging and a highly separated analyitical sound. Never harsh but supremely detailed. So yes. They sound amazing with the right amplification (and a detailed dac. I use Luxman da06) Also i learned that 120w from one manuafacturer isnt the same as 120w from another. You need something with actual CURRENT (like the Electrocompaniets which are rated at 100A max peak current). Dont try to pair these with cyrus 120w monos, they wont cut it.

These have started popping up on final closeout for about $4k, very tempting. A lot of people think a high wattage amp should be all they need, and that's not the case. These speakers (as well as the Kanta's) dip down to 3 ohms, presenting a fairly difficult load. As I found with my Thiel speakers, my 300w x 2 amp didn't cut it, giving me a harsh presentation. Once I found a pre/amp combo with tons of current, I could cut the watts in half (although they double at 4 ohms) and I was in heaven with the cable being the final piece of the puzzle. Tempting as these are at the price, I'm seriously considering the Kanta No2. I've heard the flax, I've heard the Be, but not together. Somehow I think it's going to be _the_ combo. Just tough to part with that kind of money when there's literally nobody around for hundreds of miles to demo. First world problems! Your assessment is honest and straightforward, and echos a lot of other opinions on this great little speaker.

Have you heard the GoldenEar Triton series speakers? I just got the Triton 2+s and I'm driving them with my, also new, PrimaLuna Prologue 5, 34 WPC power amp and my Peachtree Audio Nova 220SE integrated amp/DAC being used as my preamp and they are, for me, the quintessential marriage of detailed and transparent yet very musical. There is an uncanny palpable quality to vocals and acoustic instruments that shocks me every time I hear a song I know very well but am hearing for the first time through this particular iteration of my evolving system. There'st an indescribable synergy with the GoldenEar/PrimaLuna pairing that I'd love to hear your opinion of. I think both manufacturers have got the genie in the bottle so to speak and are punching far above their weight class in terms of the normal PRICE=SOUND dynamic that is usually the reality in our hobby (sickness!!!!) PS: Love your videos but I recommend getting a Rode USB mic for your voice in your videos . There is nearly no sound I am hearing above 5, maybe 6KHz on our end. Every statements you make contradicts my experience with Focal 1028. First of all, “sweetness” is not in the the tweeter, it is in the recoding and input equipment. Secondly, I drive my Focals with a 60 watt tube amp (in fact I rarely use more that 15-20 w) and the drivers sound absolutely cohesive, not “disjointed”. In fact, these speakers tend to disappear in the room, while producing a 3-dimensional, holographic sound stage. I think your time would be better spent reviewing fishing rods, not high end audio equipment.
@ThomasAndStereo
@ThomasAndStereo 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was the 2nd video I uploaded and I should have been more detail in the video. For example, what i used as poweramp.Not sure I agree with you about 'sweetness '. After owning 60+ speakers at my place, I do find speaker plays an important role. Dynaudio, Esse Quadro, Titan Tigris + 10 other speakers that i have tried at my place with their softdome tweeter definitely sounded more sweat. I am wrong in saying ALL low power amp does not work well with these 1028Be. That would be nonsense since I am sure there are many low power amp sounding great with the 1028. What I should have said is the low power amps I have tried don't sound as good as the high power amps. Sure, anyone coming to my place to listen to them will find the 1028 sounding great with the low power amp I had at the time but once I switch to the high power ones, the smoothness is not the same. Me and my friends are never satisdy with a speaker just sounding good, we are always trying to bring the maximum potential of a speaker out. Hence, we try speakers with a few amps to see. The 1028BE, we compared it to the Focal Kanta, Focal 836,926, 936, 1027s since we had all those speakers and in our experience, the high power amp drives the 1028BE with more fluidity than the low power ones. Not true for all the focal series despite rated with similar sensitivity. The Kanta for example worked fine with low power. Sure, if you have a great room and position them well, they will disappear , they do produce a 3d soundstage especially with tube gear.

Well, I think the standard are correct in the sense that amps would measure up to it's rated watt. The problem is the quality of watt vs quantity of watt. That is why to get Lots of quality watt is very expensive. I have some 300w amps that cost me $400 and some other 300w amp that cost me $5000+. Sadly, a bit of real life experience and knowledge is needed to tell the difference.
