How do you feel the overall fit and finish / assembly quality of the speakers was? I had a look at many Focal speakers at the local dealership and to be honest I was a touch disappointed. Not that it would necessarily have any bearing on sound quality, more a pride of ownership thing
@Paranimal863 жыл бұрын
For those who don’t know much about this brand they make all their drivers and cabinets in France. The crossovers are intentionally basic, because their tweeter design does not need a sophisticated crossover. They used a material the prevents fatiguing resonances, usually thats burned off at the crossover but at the sacrifice of losing detail. Go listen to some Focals yourself, they tend to have some the best imaging and detail while not taxing on your ears. Their thought is to try and not make a crossover that is overly intrusive, and make speakers that are super efficient.
@abboberg Жыл бұрын
Thanks for making excuses for their tiny and cheap crossover. For $8K a pair, the inductor should be much larger - clearly, they are trying to save on materials. I'd be curious to see what happens when Danny Richie finally gets a hold of a pair of these. However, even if he comes up with a kit (which will probably result in an improvement), those who can afford this speaker in the first place will have to decide if they want to build custom circuit boards from a $400 kit, spending 60 hours+ on the project. That's why speakers like these will eventually be replaced by active speakers, or pro audio monitors. But that means people won't spend all their personal time looking for that "ideal amp" or having to do crossover upgrades in the first place. For many, it seems, it is about the journey, and not getting great sound from the get-go.
@Paranimal86 Жыл бұрын
@@abboberg yet I’ve compared them to countless other products… and I prefer their sound signature. I don’t give a fuck if they used tinfoil to achieve their sound. This hobby has become more of how something looks than it sounds apparently. I’ve been in hifi shops and pointed out audio flaws the Apple TV was making with Dolby Atmos movie streams NONE of them could hear the very faint pops and clicks… ironically when you turned off HDR the pops and clicks were gone. It was a bottle neck issue and I called apple recorded it and the engineers told me specifically “ we are now aware and hear what your talking about but this, this might not get resolved for a very long time.” They were right it wasn’t fixed until the new generation. Anyways Yet the same people in that hifi shop were trying to tell me how great certain cables sound… give me a break. Everyone trying to look for “what measures well” they all measure well now… it’s personal taste… focal has a certain crack and smack to them other brands don’t, and I don’t really care “how accurate they are” cause they sound super vivid and lively I don’t need a Danny crossover to “correct that” and dampen it to make it more “accurate”

@mgsamps3 жыл бұрын
I don't know about using "cheaper" components or in fact if that is good practice considering the overall cost of these speakers, but generally, better drivers typically require less complicated crossovers (less correction etc) Think I remember Epos and some other well known brands using just a simple capacitor on the tweeter for a very efficient simple 1st order, great if the drivers are up to it as less components to muddy the sound.
@wadimek116 Жыл бұрын
@@mgsamps I would say thats false. Better drivers usually lose linearity to get a higher sensitivity, faster response and lower distortion or maybe higher xmax etc depending what someone want. Many of higher end speaker drivers are harder to integrate than average ones.
@wadimek116 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the drivers got the higher distortion and I doubt it matters that much on that price range. Although there are good relatively cheap drivers they still cost a bit more and companies need to save some money.

Anyone actually heard these. I haven't , but I wonder how much difference and if the average buyer would hear the difference if they used higher end crossover components. There is an expense difference in being a speaker builder, designer and actually running a business to put bread on the table. The bigger you get the more people get involved to cut quality over profits, no doubt. That said, focal has r/&d bucks that small speaker designer can't match.

Exactly, these woofers and tweeters cabinets are designed in house, designed to be super efficient for accuracy. They literally use laser to measure the driver thicknesses, and speeds... Focal makes some of the best technology in the audio industry. They’ve designed drivers for other products including Wilson audio. The tweeters also are designed to not resonate so sophisticated crossovers that burn off energy at the sacrifice of detail are not needed. People should watch stuff on their factory, they are an impressive company, not many companies design and build every component in their products.
