My dad was a Big E plankowner. His plank was made from wood saved from the WW2 Enterprise's flight deck.

the story of the Big E begins long before that when the original Big E was scrapped in the 60s she donated her steel for CVN 65 and now it is CVN 65s turn to head back into the mold as CVN 80 is born. BIG E LIVES ON!

I wish they could redesign the island of the CVN-80 so that it could share some similarity to the CVN-65.

do you think the enterprise name will last long enough for a spaceship to be named the enterprise?

You never know, If we don't destroy ourselves first I think it would only be appropriate that the first interstellar ship to carry the name Enterprise.

15 carriers later, the Big E will be born as a Ford-class carrier. In the meanwhile, they navy is having a helluva hard time trying to find a way to properly dismantle her nuclear reactor engines due to cost issues. Or so I heard.
@AvengerII
@AvengerII 5 жыл бұрын
Folks, the amount of steel they reclaimed is a VERY small percentage of the Enterprise (CVN-65)! The vast bulk of that ship is STILL tied up at Hampton Roads. They haven't decided HOW they're going to dispose of the hull because it's going to cost another $1.5billion to dismantle it (MINIMUM) and they've already spent $500million emptying the radioactive material from the 8 reactors inside the hull. If they're having this much trouble with one nuclear aircraft carrier, what do you suppose will happen as the next 3 ships coming up due for retirement over the next 15 years?!? The Nimitz, Eisenhower, and Vinson are the original Nimitz-class ships and they're all around 40 years old now. It's looking increasingly less and less likely that the Nimitz herself will be retired in 2025 since CVN-65 will likely not even be disposed of properly before 2028/2030 at the earliest! Components of that ship are STILL very radioactive. That's partly why it COULDN'T be preserved as a museum ship. Proper disposal of the reactors will not be cheap and I'm sure if they could get away with it, they (the USN) would have sunk that ship in deep water like they did the USS America (CV-66) 13 years ago.

Find another name! We've already had two great carriers named Enterprise. I'd rather have it named Langley, after CV-1, Langley.
