When designing, think about what the person is trying to accomplish. Don't let the design get in the way.

Interesting point. I think often this gets forgotten. Reminds me of the myth of the 3-click rule. Designers often say it should take three clicks to reach an end destination. Where as it's about the experience of the journey. As long as it's not frustrating/ difficult to get where the user needs to be, it's good design.

I am getting confused here. Lots of big companies like Airbnb and facebook say that the big part of their success is design. So shouldn't it be given more importance ?

It is important, but what he means is to create an experience that's with 99% satisfactory and not brood over the last 1% as much because even if it's not 100%, because as long as the user gets the desired result with a 99% good experience, that last 1% can be overlooked.

+1. I would edit the % thought to 80% vs 99%. as in 80-20 rule. :)
