► GET THE FILTER HERE: bit.ly/FocusOn...
Focusing on the stars at night can be challenging depending on what camera are you using and what lens are you using. However even with the best cameras and lenses it all boils down to eyeballing where the perfect focus could be by making the stars as small as possible but you can never be certain because there is no way to directly compare the star size to what it would be if you turned the focus ring slightly. With "Focus On Stars" filter you can see diffraction spikes even when using very wide angle lenses and you can easily asses if the current focus position is the perfect focus by zooming in and inspecting if the diffraction spikes are evenly spaced out. Perfect focus is essential in order to get the best possible quality and sharpness out of your camera system.

Ah, I have been waiting for your review :D a few days ago Steve Morris also put the review of this mask on his channel and I will say the same thing here: I own both of those filters and they work as described. I was close to buying the SharpStar 2 from Ian Norman (Lonley Speck), but I noticed that it doesnt work as well on 14mm, which was a deal braker for me as I had Samyang 14mm 2.4 lens. Luckily I came across this filter and now I am using it on all of my lenses. I have been in contact with Gabor ever since as I had a few questions before buying and I can say we are now friends. He is such a great and kind guy.

Great video as always Kamil! I think having a Bahtinov mask or a similar device as you have here is very important to resolve the details in astronomical subjects and it really gives peace of mind that you have a good focus for your astrophotos. I also appreciate the little note about the spots on your face, for detail oriented curious people (as I imagine most astrophotographers are, watching this video) :)

Your’s is the first review/demonstration of this Bhatinov mask I’ve seen that adequately covers its capabilities, including the advantage of using the mask over traditional “maskless” focus. In my tests of the Lonely Speck Sharpstar 2 it ceases to be useful at about 50mm, therefore not useful for most landscape astro. For those fussy about focus the cost of the Focus on Stars mask may be worth it to reduce the frequency of disappointment, discovering too late, during post processing, that focus was off. (The other essential focus accessory is gaffer’s tape to secure the focus ring once set.)

I got one in 2021 when i started. The thing is this. Within a perfectly symmetrical pattern there is still room to make the lines fatter or slimmer. So you need to have perfect symmetry and then fiddle to get the lines as slim as possible. By that time i can make a star as small as posssible. Same thing. I used it 4 times maybe. It's in a bag dusting. I saw it today hence the reminder.

I would be interested in knowing what leveling base you recommend for the Polaris. Love your videos.

Hi. Thank you for the share. I have tried 3d printing Bathinov masks for different focal lengths. Works equally. But i found it tough to print for wider lenses. Cheers ashvn

Will this work well with my Nikon D3100 or will I need to bump up to the D7200 or higher. Which have Bluetooth better screen and processor.

nice video! I got a couple questions here.. what focal length did you use for this video? second… can we hand hold it and use it or we need to surely get that holder?

A friend of mine says that he handholds it and works great. I am yet to try that myself

As always, good information, thanks. I’m in my mid 60s so focusing is an issue, anything helps.

These are useful filters, especially for wide angel lenses. So far not brought it, because I better like images from 35mm plus focal length. For that I use Kase's bahtinov mask in 82mm filter ring with step up or down rings.

I'm confused? I would consider this for my Rokinon primes. One is the manual focus 14 mm, f2.8, the other is the manual focus 135mm f2.0. I only see the one for wide angle lenses being available. Can you show me a listing for the one that will work with the 135mm? I find the 135 extremely difficult to focus. The 14 requires a costly filter adapter. Thanks to your mention of how awesome the Sigma Art primes are, I've purchased the 35 mm f1.4, and 50 f1.4. The 20mm is in the mail. You got me hooked! They're crazy sharp ! Thanks for helping me go broke hhaha... Since these have auto focus, I see less need for the for the "focus on stars" filter. I just use auto focus at a distant object, switch to manual, and tape focus ring in place.

Hmm, looks like the TELE version of Focus On Stars is not yet on the market. I can ask the owner when it will be available! But as far as the AF lenses go, unfortunately autofocus can’t be trusted. Often times it will get you close to focus but even by focussing manually without any filters you can focus better than the camera’s autofocus did. Next time you’re out try to AF on a distant object and then zoom in on a star and move the focus ring back and forth to see how accurate AF was. Sometimes it may be very close but it’s not a reliable way to focus on the night sky

Mike, Gabor just told me that if you want to purchase the TELE version of Focus On Stars, you can order the wide angle version (size 100mm) and indicate in the comment that you want the TELE. Otherwise they will be available normally on the website within 2 weeks!

@@kamilkp Okay, Thanks Mike and Kamil. I have the USB dock for the Sigma's. I'll try what you said Kamil, then maybe calibate, then try again. Otherwise I may try the 82mm batinof mask mentioned in the comments. Farpoint (whom I never heard of before), has them for $16. Might try this with the 135 first. Thanks again.

there are TONS of 3d printed botanov masks for that 135mm on ebay. they're like $15

LOL, that's an overpriced bahtinov filter, I bought a Kase filter for half that price a few years back and it doesn't even need a holder.

over $100? seems steep. can't we just 3D print one? EDIT: okay so i get it actually. this is a nice filter! but still i'd probably only say it's worth like $50 to $70 to me. i can use a botanov mask but the improvment over one is hard to shell out that much for. but it DOES make it look easy which can be super important
