It is interesting that Focusrite hasn't gone with onboard digital / analogue processing (other than Air mode) as many others have. With computers getting so fast and round trip latencies getting under 2ms, I am watching to see which way things go. As latency / computer load has long been a compelling reason for onboard processing, if that issue goes away there can be far more flexibility using plugins for monitoring in DAWs (not to mention cost savings). With my Scarletts and Clarett+ when I need some "mood" for a vocalist, I mix in my Behringer FX2000 using Focusrite control for their headphone mix, but record the unprocessed audio in my DAW. A plugin or switch would be alot faster, but again I'm interested in seeing how things progress on the latency / need for DSP front...

With the idea of using this for talking when sharing some of my old 78 and radio transcriptions. Hi, thanks for this video! This was super useful to help me to me understand better about my Scarlett + Clarett OctoPre connections But I'm still confused about one thing though... Allow me to provide some context on my setup: I currently utilize both my Scarlett 18i20 and Clarett OctoPre for in/out expansion, and I aim to incorporate a stereo compressor as a hardware insert along with the Clarett OctoPre. My primary objective is to plug it in the INSERTS, giving me more flexibility when switching from the Outboard Compressor to normal inputs on the Clarett OctoPre - I use Pro Tools. I've grasped the process for achieving this with the Scarlett-routing from Out 5-6 to the compressor and back to In 5-6. This ensures that Pro Tools recognizes it as an I/O insert. However, I'm puzzled about obtaining an output from the Clarett, given its ADAT Digital interface as it have physical cable connection to the compressor, but only ADAT Initially, I considered routing Out 5-6 from the Scarlett to the INSERTS 5-6 on the Clarett. However, I'm concerned that the interaction between Focusrite Control ADAT and Pro Tools I/O may complicate matters, as PRO TOOLS requires identical I/O settings (5-6) Can you confirm if my assumption is correct? Despite my confusion, I've observed many users successfully integrate Pro Tools, hardware, and the Clarett, leading me to believe that a solution must exist. Apologies for the convoluted explanation, and I appreciate any assistance you can offer. Apologies if I'm over complicating things, as I'm a noob in routing, patch bay etcs. Thank you

hey there, thank you for such a detailed video! I learned a lot about routing but still feel like I have a lot to figure out. I was hoping you could help me find a solution for streaming and recording with OBS with my setup. I'm using a PC, a scarlett 6i6, ableton live, and I don't have a board. I'd like to create a mix that goes in my ear with a metronome, and a mix that goes to the listener. It seems like there are easy solutions for mac users but not so much for PC.
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks! You can set this up by doing the following: Step 1 - In Ableton ensure your have extra outputs enabled in the audio preferences. Step 2 - Also in Ableton, open the I/O section and change the routing for the "Cue Out" to output 3 or 3/4 on the Scarlett. Step 3- Using a TRS patch cable, connect output 3 to input 3 on the back of your Scarlett (you can also do this with output 4/input 4). Step 4 - In the output routing section in Focusrite Control for output 1/2 ensure the levels for inputs 3 and 4 are all the way down (muted) and that Software/DAW Playback in at unity gain. Step 5 - In the output routing section in Focusrite Control for output 3/4 ensure the levels for inputs 3/4 and Software/DAW playback are all set to unity gain. With this configuration, you will hear the metronome and Ableton audio through your headphones plugged into the second headphone output on the front of your 6i6 and audio from Ableton without the metronome will be sent to your speakers on outputs 1/2 and headphone output 1. Hope this helps out!

Thank you so much for an excellent pair of tutorials. I was hoping you would cover routing to get DAW Playback into say Zoom or Skype. I am a voice talent and often do directed sessions via zoom or skype. At the moment whilst they can here the studio mic, I cant work out how to route DAW playback so they can listen back to the take. I may have missed it in the tutorials. Your advice would be fantastic thanks

I'm glad to help out! Great question and I will have a short specific tutorial for using Focusrite Control (FC) to manage audio in Zoom etc. coming soon, but here is a head start... I choose an output in FC to be my "Zoom" audio. I then configure the inputs (including DAW playback) that I want to use with video calls to playback through the output I chose for calls. Then comes the part that is not quite as intuitive. Outputs cannot be selected as "microphones" with Zoom or other apps. The solution is to connect a TRS patch cable between the output your chose for calls and an input you will use as your "Zoom microphone." After adjusting the mix levels to your liking, you would now select the input you patched into with the TRS cable in your voice call app and you are ready to go! If you need to adjust the mix levels while on a call, I recommend setting up the Ipad control as I demonstrated and keeping it open during your call (you could also use FC on your computer if you have enough screen real estate). Hope this helps out!

This is a great video, very informative and helpful, btw I have an old Scarlett 18i8 1st gen (still working fine), and I'm thinking on upgrading with a 8i6 or 18i8 3rd gen, but wanted to take advantage of the old unit mic pres (1-4) using SPDIF (not ADAT because I see the 18i8 has only Optical Input, no Output), do you have any recommendation on how to implement this in the better way possible to maximize Inputs, and maybe outputs (for multiple monitor sets)? Thanks again!
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
Much appreciated. It is a great idea to use your existing 4 preamps with your new interface. The 18i8 1st gen will remember the configuration you setup in Mix Control so it can be used as a stand alone preamp (no PC connection required). You can use the SPDIF out to route 2 channels (2 of your preamps) to your new interface and while you could route the other 2 preamps through your monitor outputs, this would mean you get 4 preamps but no additional monitor capabilities. In this configuration, your 1st gen also become the master clock sending the signal to your new interface by SPDIF. This means you won't be able to change the clock setting in Focusrite Control for you new interface. You could use a second SPDIF cable from the out on your new interface to the in on your 1st gen to setup the new interface as the master clock, but there can be mixed results with this approach. Another option is to use the headphone outputs to route your 4 preamps. On your 1st gen, route preamps 1/2 to outputs 3/4 (headphone 1) and preamps 3/4 to outputs 5/6 (headphone 2). You would then use dual mono to stereo patch cables to connect the headphone outputs on your 1st gen to analogue inputs on your new interface. While this uses up line inputs on your new interface, it solves the clock issue I mentioned above. There is no issue with using headphone outputs on the 1st get as line outs as the voltage output it well within the safety range for analogue inputs. I could go into the reasons / calculations for this, but here is a great article from Sweetwater that explains why this is ok www.sweetwater.com/insync/headphone-outputs-used-line-outputs-for-line-level-gear/ . With this option you could run an SPDIF from your new interface out to the input on your 1st gen and setup the 1st gen to send SPDIF in to outputs 1/2 with the new interface as the clock master and the 1st gen as the slave. Now you have all 4 preamps and an additional set of monitor outputs. To maximize IO for preamps and allow for a second set of monitors, you could route preamps 1/2 to SPDIF out, preamps 3/4 to outputs 3/4, and SPDIF in to outputs 1/2 on your 1st gen using Mix Control (again the 1st gen will be the clock slave). You would then have your 1st gen preamps 1/2 on SPDIF on your new interface, with preamps 3/4 from your 1st gen to two line inputs on your new interface, and a second set of monitor outputs from SPDIF on your new interface being routed to the monitor outputs on your 1st gen. This approach maximizes IO on both devices. Sorry about the long response, but I wanted to provide the options + pro and cons of each setup. Hope this helps out and let me know if you have further questions. Thanks again for checking out my tutorial!

@@askdrtk Wow, great comprehensive response, I appreciate very much the different options provided in detail, and as a matter of fact, after I sent the comment/question I started designing a setup, and I think it is very similar, if not same, to your maximized option, like this: 18i8 1st Gen (SPDIF slave , and standalone mode) 1) XLR preamp In 1&2 -> SPDIF Out 7&8 2) XLR preamp In 3&4 -> Monitor Out 1&2 (from the back using TS patch cables, right? ) 3) HP 2 Out 5&6 -> SPDIF In 9&10 (so the HP02 could be used as a 3rd HP out, not sure if I would be able to control volume on the old scarlett HP02, do you know?) 8i6 3rd Gen (Internal-master) * SPDIF In (7&8) from 1) * Line In 5&6 from 2) using TS patch cables, right? * SPDIF Out 5&6 from 3) So the new Scarlett using SPDIF In&Out, and a couple of Line level Ins, but now having 4 extra XLR preamps, and 1 extra (3rd) HP Output from the old 18i8, right? And something similar if I get the 18i8 3rd Gen or even the 18i20 (getting greedy hehehe) Thanks again for all the detailed information Subscribed and looking forward for your following videos 🙂

My pleasure to help out. It sounds like you have a good plan. My recommendations though would be to use outputs 3 and 4 instead of 1 and 2 on your 1st gen. That way you can use both headphones and a second set of monitors from the SPDIF in. Also, use TRS cables from the 1st gen outputs to the new interface as both the inputs and outputs are balanced connections that will help prevent interference. When choosing a new interface, I like to plan ahead. More IO is great for preamps, but also potential outboard effects and monitoring in the future... Let me know how things go.

@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks and great question! There will always be some latency, but there are no issues with that setup. Even with all channels fully utilized, latency is well below 1ms and not perceptible. For comparison, standing 30 feet from a stage monitor or guitar cabinet results in more latency. I have used this and other ADAT/SPDIF setups for tracking with multiple headphone monitor mixes + live performance without issue.

This is very helpful thank you. You show the analogue out options through preamps as standalone, but how do I set up the routing in Focusrite Control for ADAT optical 8 channel connections to my DAW digitally? The Control app layout is somewhat confusing in that there are drop down menus under the Output section to add hardware inputs but then also to the right column further options to add inputs and monitoring. My idea is to send guitar preamps and also send / receive via DAW to outboard compressors and FX via the Behringer ADA8000 AD/DA converter connected to my Clarett 8pre (TB) with x2 ADAT cables (in and out).
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
The main purpose for Focusrite Control is to configure what analog, ADAT, and SPDIF inputs (and computer playback) is sent to each output on your 8pre. With the ADA8000, you are connecting 8 additional analog inputs and outputs to the ADAT IO on your 8pre which will then be available in your DAW as ADAT channel out 1-8 and ADAT in 1-8. Depending on which DAW you are using, you may need to setup the ADAT channels in the IO settings, but other than that no configuration is needed in Focusrite Control unless you want to monitor any of your ADAT inputs directly through the 8pre's outputs. Also note that some DAWs will show your ADAT 1 inputs 1-8 as input channels 13-20 and ADAT 1 outputs as output channels 13-20 (assuming 44.1 or 48kHz). I hope this helps out!

Thanks that puts things in better perspective. I've always thought that Focusrite Control has to be somehow routed for each different setup but just discovered that the ADAT is routed automatically in my case to Logic Pro - just need to change the wordclock source settings etc. From what I understand the app is mainly for custom monitoring setups. I got crazy loud feedback loops in the beginning but just need to understand the app layout and signal flow better.

Hey, sorry I took a while to get back to you. You could use a dedicated preamp for the booth (and there are advantages), but if you want to use one channel from an 18i20 or an 8Pre, a phantom power supply like the Xvive P1, I use it regularly and it is a great option. You would connect it inline to the mic (usually near the interface for convenience) to provide power only to the booth mic. It is clean and transparent plus has very long battery life (you can also leave it plugged in). Hope this helps out!

Glad to help out! This is where headphones being tied to anything other than the main monitor mix can be an issue. If you don't see a need for an interface with additional IO in the future, one solution may be to pick up an inexpensive mixer like the Behringer Q502 (about $50usd). You could connect the 4i4 monitor outputs 1+2 to the line inputs on the Q502 and you will then have both monitor and headphone outputs with independent level controls. This way, the Q502 will work as a monitor / headphone controller, but at a far lower cost...

@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
Congratulations on the new 18i20's, you have a lot of IO to work with! The basic set requires using one as master (connected to your computer by usb) and the other as slave (connected to the master via ADAT and SPDIF). To do this you first need to connect only the slave to your computer and open Focusrite Control. In FC you will then setup the analog inputs 1-8 to be the only inputs routed to the ADAT outputs 1-8. You then setup the analog outputs to use only inputs from ADAT inputs 1-8 and SPDIF input 1-2. I would setup ADAT 1-8 to Outputs 1-8 and SPDIF inputs 1-2 to outputs 9 and 10, but the order is up to you. I go through this configuration in this video starting at 10:20 and ending around 14:22. After this is complete and before you disconnect the slave, configure the sample rate to what you want to use (I recommend 48kHz), the clock source to ADAT, and the digital IO to SPDIF RCA. Once the slave is configured in FC, it can be disconnected from your computer. You would then connect the master to your computer and connect the ADAT and SPDIF cables between the master and slave. Note that you need ADAT cables for both the inputs and outputs on both 18i20's but only need the SPDIF out from the master to the SPDIF in on the slave since the 18i20 only has 8 analog input but has 10 analog outputs. If you want to use the SPDIF out from the slave, you could connect it to another DAC - note that in this case use would need to configure the SPDIF output for the slave using FC for whichever ADAT or SPDIF inputs you want set over SPDIF out from the slave (they will be duplicates of 2 of the other analog outputs). The SPDIF input on the master could be used for another preamp that has a SPDIF output. Now that the master is connected to your computer by usb, you will again open Focusrite Control to configure the ADAT and SPDIF outputs. First set the sample rate to the same as you did for the slave (again, I recommend 48kHz), the set the clock source to internal, and then set the digital Io mode to SPDIF RCA. Now, for each ADAT and SPDIF output, configure the outputs to use only specific inputs from the Playback (DAW) options. I would suggest ADAT 1.1-1.2 to be 11-12, ADAT 1.3-1.4 to be 13-14, ADAT 1.5-1.6 to be 15-16, ADAT 1.7-1.8 to be 17-18, and SPDIF to be 19-20. There is no need to configure the ADAT or SPDIF inputs as these will automatically be available in your DAW. Once this setup is complete you will have access to all of the analog inputs and outputs on both the master and slave from your DAW. You will have 16 analog channels in, 20 analog channels out, and 2 SPDIF channels in (for use with a future digital preamp, etc) all available in your DAW. Direct monitor mixes from the inputs on both the master and slave can now be configured using the mixer in FC for any of the analog or ADAT outputs. I know this was lengthy, but I hope it helps out!

Hi! I am looking to inout audio deembedded from HDMI via optical cable (that's what my HDMI switch does - deembeds to a regular optical cable). Should I be able to input this into my Focusrite 18i8 3rd gen? I have tried various configs and failed. My understanding is that the audio output is optical SPDIF (not sure here) and in the Focusrite control I should set the spdif setting to optical. This does nothing regardless of the clock setting, all the SPDIF and ADAT inputs show no signal.

Great info and well explained video. I am considering buying 4 Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 3rd Gen 18-In 20-Out models. I want to be able to play 32 channels of an analog signal (coming from my DAW) into my Allen Heath 32 TRS balanced line inputs. (So I can mix old school with my vintage outboard gear) It seems I would need 4 of the Scarlet units to achieve 32 channels of balanced analog as 3 Scarlet units only get me to 30 TRS line outputs to run into the Allen Heath... Would you know of a better way to do this that might use less interface units and be more cost effective? Thanks for your time in advance and again well explained video. Phil NYC / Jersey Shore Area

Hi Phil, Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed my video. Great project to setup 32 channels on the AH. To setup 32x32 the Scarlett 18i20 is not going to be the way to go. Scarlett interfaces will not work as aggregate devices on either Windows or Mac, so you can only use one connected to the computer at a time. At best, you use one as the master and then slave another to it using ADAT which will give you 16x16 analog. I am going to recommend picking up a MOTU 16A. I have used a lot of MOTU gear including the 16A, 828es, etc. and the build quality and conversion is very good. The 16A will give you 16x16 TRS ins/outs and 16 ADAT ins/outs. For the 16 ADAT, you could go with a pair of Behringer ADA8200 8-channel units (they are better than their price would suggest). This will give you 32x32 overall for a price of around $1955 from Sweetwater (cheaper than 4 Scarlett 18i20s). The only thing is that the ADA8200 have TRS ins but only XLR outs, so you will need a 16 channel XLR/TRS snake. If you don't mind going a bit up in cost, a great combination would be a MOTU 16A with a Ferrofish Pulse 16. This will give you 32x32 TRS ins/outs with excellent reliability, conversion, and easy connectivity/setup. This combo is about $2600 from Sweetwater, but with only one interface / driver to setup in your DAW and for the performance / quality, you would not be thinking about upgrades. Both of these options provide outstanding 32x32 performance at a great price point. The 16A works with both USB and Thunderbolt, so you have options down the road and will get pro quality conversion for all the AH analog goodness... Hope this helps out!

@@askdrtk Hi Todd. Thanks for the super detailed reply! Note: I thought I replied already, but must have not hit send, so hope you don't get this message twice. My scenario is I bought a Presonus StudioLive 32S Digital mixer last year thinking I could use it as a control surface for Studio One and also as an interface. I thought I would take the analog outs of the Presonus into my Allen Heath. What I didn't realize (unfortunately) is I can only send 16 outs of the Presonus at one time. *The control surface aspect of the mixer is great w/32 faders, but I do find the mixer complicated to use with all the layers and not intuitive, unfortunately. So now my plan is to use the mixer only as a control surface and do the mixdowns on the AH. Hence, looking for a cost effective way to get me 32 balanced outs from an interface setup. Note: I don't really need 32 analog inputs at one time and could get by with only 8 to 12 (prefer 12) as long as I can get the 32 outputs for mixdown from the DAW. ^The Presonus Quantum 48/48 would have been a great choice, except it only used Thunderbolt, which I don't have on my Laptop). It's now out of production also. Thanks again for your very detailed reply. Appreciated. Phil NYC / Jersey Shore Area

This was an excellent video. Thanks so much. I am a tad confused about one thing. I have an older Clarrette 8pre that is maxed out. I need 8 more channels. Do I need a Scarlette 1820 or a Clarette OctoPre 8 which sends ADAT to the Clarette? Thanks
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! You can use either an OctoPre or an interface such as the 18i20. If you go the 18i20 route, you need to temporarily disconnect the Clarett 8pre and connect the 18i20 by usb to your computer so you can set it up in stand alone mode using Focusrite Control. This routes analog inputs to ADAT outputs and ADAT inputs to analog outputs. You also need to set the clock source to ADAT and set the sample rate to whatever you are using on the Clarette 8pre. You then disconnect the 18i20 from usb, reconnect the Clarett 8Pre, and connect your ADAT cables between the Clarett and 18i20. The most common reason for going this route it that the 18i20 is at a lower price compared to the Octopre, but you sacrifice the convenience of the Octopre front panel sync and sample rate controls. If you go the Octopre route, you connect your ADAT cables between the Clarett 8pre and the Octopre, select sync as ADAT, and set the sample rate of the Octopre to match your Clarett 8pre, all on the front panel controls of the Octopre. Note that you can use either the Clarett+ Octopre (Clarett Octopre if you can find one used) or the Scarlett Octopre Dynamic. There are two Scarlett Octopre's, the standard one is mic preamps only where are the "Dynamic" is similar to the Clarett Octopre as it has both 8 mic pres and 8 analog outs. I hope this helps out!

@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
I have some good news for you Bob! If you go with the Clarett+ Octopre, the analog input preamps and analog outputs on the Octopre go through the onboard converters, so you get the extra dynamic range (and you can hear it - I use a Clarett+ for tracking drums). The output converted to digital in the Octopre then passes through the interface (Clarett 8 Pre in your case) via ADAT without change. Of course the analog inputs and outputs on your Clarett 8 Pre will still be converted internally at the original dynamic range. This is a good upgrade path. You could start with the Clarett+ Octopre and then upgrade your Clarett 8 Pre to a + later, or all at the same time...ahh, gear "escalation." The Clarett+ preamps and converters are a significant step up from the Scarlett (not to say great recordings can't be made on the Scarletts - the gen 3's in particular are far better than they get credit for), but the Clarett+ are sitting quietly in the shadow of Red, with converters easily capable of living in pro studios. If the numbers make sense, the Clarett+ 8pre and Clarett+ Octopre are 16 channels in and out of studio quality sound...

FC + the app really does level up the whole Scarlett / Clarett experience. It's like getting a free multi-headphone mix system all included. I'm amazed Focusrite doesn't do more to promote these capabilities... I find the app really stable on both iPad and iPhone (I regularly use it with an 8th gen iPad and IPhone XR, 11, and 12). It doesn't seem to matter how many I have running (tried up to 4 - stable, no control latency/sync issues), but I have solid wifi and my system is running with a 5900X, so plenty of power to run everything.

@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed my FC digital guide. Converters are a matter of constant debate. I will start by saying that imo converters have become so good in the past 5-8 years, unless you have a mastering setup it is hard to see alot of benefit in high priced units. That said, I have both a Clarett + 8 pre and a Motu 828es in my studio space. The 828es uses the Sabre 32 ultra DAC which is generally well regarded. What many don't know is that Focusrite greatly improved the converters in the Clarret + interfaces (due to a chip shortage). The Clarett + uses a Cirrus Logic C-5381 for AD and a Cirrus Logic C-43198 for DA. To my ears, through a pair of Genelec 8040s, a difference cannot be heard between the Clarett + 8pre and 828es. Perhaps if I had a set of ATCs I would hear something, but that is really reaching for something... In terms of dynamic range (and there is more to converters than only dynamic range) DA for the Ensemble is 123dB, Orion 3rd gen is 120dB, the 828es is 123dB, and the new Cirrus 43198s in the Clarett + 8 pre is 130dB. Yes, 130dB... For AD conversion, the Ensemble is 119dB, Orion is 121dB, the 828es spec is difficult to come by as Motu only provides "DAC" dynamic range, and the Clarett + is 120dB. I'm not trying to say that the Clarett + is superior, or in fact any of these converters are superior, but what I would say is that to my ears, through my Genelec 8040s (decent imo), I would be hard pressed to find any difference to justify price differences based solely on conversion. Of course some of these interfaces have other features which could justify the cost (especially if you like DSP which is a whole other conversation in 2022). If you aren't worried about DSP (I am not with the minimal latency and computer power to handle plugins I have) the Clarett + is an exceptional value imo with its new upgraded converters that have been flying under the radar. Hope this helps out!

@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
Ok, got it. In that case you will likely see a reduction in transient response (maybe 5%). I've found that staging your gain in this scenario can make a difference. I would try experimenting with both pre and post hardware insert gain balanced with varying the gain on the Clarett to find the sweet spot where you get the most transient response. There can often be an extra 1-3dB of dynamic range across the entire usable input / output gain from many converters depending where your gain is coming into the chain. Usually you get the most range when you fall just short of clipping the converters with less input gain and more post gain. I tried this with a Scarlett 2nd gen and ended up with about an extra 1.5dB before we switched to the Clarett + for additional IO (plus the preamps are pretty nice).

A quick question... ****** I already use the 18i20's ADAT to get an extra 8 inputs using a Behringer ADA800. If I do this, does it mean one can't use the SPDIF IN RCA input on the 18i20 - to get an extra two input channels? (I think you said this.) Hi Peter, glad to help out as always… Yes you can use the additional two channels of input from the SPDIF input. (I assume you are using a sample rate of 48KHz as you have 8 ADAT inputs from the AD8000). Using a AD converter is a great way to take advantage of the extra channels. Cheers!

Hmm, the inputs should be available as ASIO inputs 11 and 12 in your DAW without setting anything up in FC and then setup FC to monitor the SPDIF inputs to whichever outputs you want to use. If all this looks good and you still are not getting sound, chances are it is a clock issue. Since the SPDIF connection from your AD converter is one way (the converters sends its clock out), you will need to set the 18i20's clock source to SPDIF so 18i20 can sync up with the AD converter. Hopefully this will get things going.

It is possible to get studio one to rebuild its setting including audio setup. To do this, go to the settings folder (you can access it from the help menu. Then exit studio one. In the settings folder find the "Studio One" .SETTINGS file. Some say to delete it, but i prefer to rename it to "Studio One OLD" just in case I want to go back. Now reopen studio one and it should rebuild settings and allow you to go through the setup process for you 8i6. Hope this helps out. You can route channels with the 4i4 and will be able to mix hardware and PC inputs to the four outputs and loopback, including headphones. Each interface model does have limits on the number of channels you can mix (4i4 has 4 in, 4 out, plus the 2 channel loopback) simultaneously to each output, and the 4i4 does not have digital IO, so you will not see those options.

@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
Hello! Happy New Year and best wishes in 2023 to you as well! For the connections I would go with any open pair of outs on the 18i20 and connect to the two inputs on the sampltrek. You could then go into Focusrite Control and setup your system playback 1/2 to output to whichever outputs you connected to the sample track. This will allow you to record directly from itunes playback with the sampltrek providing audio sync. You would then edit your sample in the sampltrek as usual. That is the simplest way to get it done. You could also take advantage of syncing up start/stop and tempo via midi. Since itunes does not support this you would need to use your DAW. To this, make the connections the same way between the 18i20 and sampltrek, but no need to route output in Focusrite Control. You would then record the sample from itunes into your DAW using the loopback input from your 18i20 making sure you have tempo setup the same as you . You then need a midi out from your sampltrek to midi in on the 18i20 and midi out from the 18i20 to midi in on the sampltrek. Once you configure the sampltrek as a midi controller in your DAW you will be able to start/stop DAW playback when you that record on the sampltrek. Tempo will also stay in sync this way. Hope these two options give you a starting point!

Most 2 channel aux to optical converters I have seen use SPDIF as opposed to ADAT. You can set the Digital IO Mode in Focusrite Control to Optical SPDIF. This configures the optical input and output 2 as SPDIF instead of ADAT. Optical input and output 1 remain as ADAT in this configuration. Setting the Digital IO mode to Optical SPDIF and connecting your aux to optical converter to the optical input port 2, you should have two channel audio inputs on channels 11-12. Hope this helps out!

Yes you can. Connect the optical out from your TV to the first optical in on your 18i20. This will allow you to send two-channel stereo audio from you TV to your Scarlett. S/PDIF over optical is limited to two channels and surround sound over optical from TVs is not sent in ADAT format, so surround sound formats cannot be sent to the 18i20 (TV optical surround requires AC3, DTS, etc decoding). If you are getting reverb across everything when it is unmuted, it sounds like a number of channels might be routed to the output you are using to send audio to the MX200. I would first suggest connecting another source to inputs 3&4 on the 18i20 to confirm levels look good. After that, if you are getting signal to inputs 3&4 one of the most likely causes is a Volume block or even Global blocks on your axefx2. I would check your output settings to see if any of the blocks are configured to disrupt signal (such as expression pedals that are not plugged in). I've also seen this where a new amp is not compatible with output routing configurations in older firmware, in which case doing an update often solves the issue. Another alternative, though a hassle to setup your custom presets again, is to do a factory reset, which generally solves these kinds of issues. Hope this helps and let me know how it goes!

@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
In order to have both processors connected to the 18i8 and have all of their word clocks in sync, you will need to use either the Kemper or Axe as the master clock. The issue will be getting one processor to sync to the other. Depending on which Kemper you have, some support word clock as both internal/auto while some only support internal (and therefore need to be the master). The best chance to get this working is if your Kemper supports "auto" mode for word clock. Connect the Kemper SPDIF RCA output to your 18i8 SPDIF RCA input and your Axe SPDIF output to the 18i8 optical input using your converter as you said. Set the 18i8 to use SPDIF source as "Optical" and the clock source to SPDIF. Now your 18i8 will sync to either the Kemper or the Axe, but not all at the same time. To solve this, connect an RCA cable from the SPDIF RCA output on your Axe to the SPDIF input on your Kemper. I know this sounds strange as you aren't sending audio from your Axe to your Kemper, but the idea is that the Axe will serve as the master word clock and the Kemper will be the slave. You will need to set the Kemper word clock to "Auto/Internal" (found in the SPDIF volume page). This way the clock comes from the Axe, the Kemper syncs to the Axe, and the 18i8 also syncs to the Axe. All three will be in sync and you should be able to use both on the 18i8 without swapping settings. This is a bit of a work around, but I hope it helps out.

Thanks and I'm glad to help out! The two most common reasons audio doesn't pass over ADAT are either sync or routing setup in FC. If sync is the issue, not audio will pass in or out. If your external ADAT device and 18i20 clocks are synced, then the issue is likely the need to adjust the mixer in FC. Since you are using front inputs 1-2, go into FC, select the ADAT 1-2 output and then either select "Hardware Input 1-2" or if you want to use "Custom Mix" turn up the fader for inputs 1-2. Let me know if this solves the issue. If you still aren't getting sound, let me know what you have connected over ADAT and how you have word clock configured on both devices.

If you are using TRS cables between your clarett+ and patch bay that is likely the issue. The combo jack inputs on the clarett+ are designed for line level only through TRS/TS while XLR allows for both microphones and line level signals. Many will use an XLR to TRS cable for a TRS patch bay, just be careful with phantom power... For gain staging a preamp or channel strip to the interface, the first thing I consider is ambient sound. If I want to hear more of the room, I bring the level up higher on the preamp (peaks often around -10dB) and then add very little from the interface so as peaks into the DAW are around -8 to -6dB. If I want to control ambience, I set the preamp so as to have peaks around -14db and then bring the peaks up with the interface so the DAW again has -8 to -6dB. This of course can vary if I am tracking with compression in with case I alter the proportion of gain between the preamp and interface to either emphasize or de-emphasize character imparted by the compression. This is big topic and there will be videos coming... All the best of the season to you and yours as well!

@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
While you can connect your Clarett+ and UMC 1820 with two ADAT cables, unfortunately the issue you are having relates to the way the UMC routes its analog ports. While the Clarett+ 8pre supports "stand-alone" mode, meaning its inputs can be routed to ADAT out and its outputs can be routed from ADAT in, the UMC does not. There is no way to configure the UMC to forward its analog inputs to its ADAT output nor is it possible to route its ADAT input to its analog outputs. The UMC is designed to work as the master only with ADAT. I definitely understand wanting to use the Clarett+ as the master, but unfortunately the UMC cannot be setup as a slave. You could setup the Clarett+ as stand-alone and slave it to the UMC as the master, but of course this is not making the best use of the Clarett+. While it is a hassle, the most affordable way to deal with this is probably to sell the UMC on Reverb...etc (the 1820s hold their value well) and then purchase an ADA8200 (for the same or possibly less than you can sell the UMC). The ADA8200 is specifically designed to work as a slave and will provide the additional IO you need for your outboard gear. Of course there are more expensive options (Clarett Octopre or Scarlett Octopre Dynamic) and others, but conversion on the ADA8200 is good and the unit has proven to be reliable. This isn't the response I like to give, but I hope it helps out!

The 18i8 supports eight channels of optical ADAT input but does not support ADAT output. The maximum channels counts are 18 in (8 analog, 2 SPDIF, 8 ADAT) and 8 out (4 analog, 2 headphone, 2 SPDIF). To use the line outputs on your octopre you would need to upgrade to an interface that includes an optical output connector.

It depends which Octopre you have. The Scarlett Octopre Dynamic and Clarett Octopre both have analog outs, whereas teh standard Scarlett Octopre does not. I have always loved cars. I like to say I grew up working on cars with my grandfather from the time I could crawl under the hood...👍(but that's for another time, maybe Discord...) You can continue to run the 18i20 over usb to your Mac with the 8pre connected to the 18i20 by ADAT. It may seem backwards, but typically the clock is setup as the expansion unit (8pre) on ADAT being the master and the interface (18i20) being the slave (this greatly reduced sync issues). The main consideration is that your sample rate will need to be set the same on both the 8pre and 18i20 for it to work. You shouldn't need to do anything with your Focusrite Control installation. 1. Disconnect the 18i20 from the Mac and connect the 8pre. FC will recognize it. 2. Go into FC and set the sample rate to 48kHz and the clock to internal on the 8pre (you need to use 44.1 or 48 to have all 8 inputs and all 8 outputs over ADAT from the 8pre). 3. Disconnect the 8pre from the Mac and reconnect the 18i20. 4. Go into FC (it will bring up the 18i20) and set the sample rate to 48kHz and the clock source to ADAT. That should do it, you will have access to 8 analogue inputs, 2 SPDIF inputs, the 8 inputs from the 8pre via ADAT, 2 loopback inputs, 10 analogue outputs, 2 SPDIF outputs, and 8 outputs from the 8pre via ADAT all within Cubase under the 18i20 ASIO. Hope this helps out!

It sounds (no pun intended) like you are sending a mix of both the DAW playback and analog input into each output on your Clarret. To setup FC for hardware inserts in ProTools (and other DAWs) I set each output to have only the corresponding DAW Playback input number (single setting and mixer is not required). If you try to use Custom Mix with more than one output/input pair sound will be doubled as FC uses the same Custom Mix for all outputs. For example, setup the Output 3 source as Playback DAW 3, the Output 4 source as Playback DAW source 4, and so on. This way only the send from ProTools will go to your outboard and ProTools will pick up the outboard return from the corresponding numbered input on the Clarret. I use the custom mix for monitoring only when I need to mix DAW playback with hardware inputs for recording. I hope this helps out!

It is for 3rd gen 18i8 and 18i20 only. On the 18i8 it allows you to switch the optical input between ADAT and SPDIF protocol and the 18i20 adds a second optical port for dual ADAT at higher sample rates. SPDIF over optical is less commonly used in my experience (2 channels vs 8 for ADAT). Both the 2nd gen 18i8 and 18i20 have a single optical input that is ADAT only, so no need for digital i/o menu. Nice dual channel strip... To get everything synced up you can use the MPA as the clock source. Connect the ADAT output from the MPA to the ADAT input on 18i8 and set the clock on the 18i8 to ADAT in Focusrite Control. Then connect the SPDIF output from the JOEMEEK to the SPDIF input on the 18i8. Finally, connect a word clock (BNC) cable form the word clock out on the MPA to the word clock in on the JOEMEEK. The JM will automatically detect the clock and sync up. This way you can maximize the digital connections on your 18i8 and keep everything in sync. Hope this helps out!

Does anyone know how to setup a scarlett and clarett together on Mac with adat?
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 10 ай бұрын
Generally I would connect the Clarett to the Mac and then the Scarlett to the Clarett with ADAT. You will need two ADAT cables, one from the out on the Clarett to the in on the Scarlett and one from the out on the Scarlett to the in on the Clarett. For this to work you first need to use Focusrite Control to configure the Scarlett for Stand-Alone operation with the Scarlett’s analog inputs sent to its ADAT outputs and its analog outputs configured to output from its ADAT inputs. You also need to set the clock source of the Scarlett to ADAT. This is done with the Scarlett connected to the Mac and the Clarett disconnected from the Mac. Once the Scarlett is setup, disconnect it from the Mac and connect the Clarett. In Focusrite Control, ensure the Clarett’s clock source is configured to Internal. The analog inputs and outputs from the Scarlett will now be available in your DAW as the ADAT inputs and outputs from your Clarett. I hope this helps out! If you have further questions, let me know which Scarlett and Clarett you have and I can be more specific.

One thing I cannot solve. I am connecting a Yamaha Motif XF to my SPDIF port. When playing something I am getting a strange glitch sound in irregular intervals. The sound is present only when playing something. I SOLVED THIS by setting the CLOCK SOURCE from "Internal" to "S/PDIF". But now when I turn off my keyboard I have no sound output even though the focusrite mixer shows singnals on VUmeters. When I turn on my keyboard everything is fine. This means I have to have my keyboard ON all the time or switch the clock from internal to S/PDIF .... :( WHAT am I doing wrong ?
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
Actually you are not doing anything wrong. The issue is that in order for two devices to communicate and pass digital audio over SPDIF (and other formats) the wordclock of both devices has to be in sync. The wordclock from your Motif is sent along with the digital audio over SPDIF and your interface receives the digital audio and wordclock (if you have clock source set to SPDIF) and then synchronizes itself to the Motif. If the clocks on the two devices are out of sync one of two things happens. 1. If the sample rate on both devices is set to 44.1 (the Motif XF operates at 44.1) and both use internal clock, you usually will get glitches and crackling. 2. If the sample rates are different on each device (MOTIF 44.1 and interface 48 for example) the will be no sound output from your interface. The same will happen if no clock is present (Motif is powered off and interface clock is set to SPDIF), Audio will still show on the VUmeters, but the DA converter will not be able to convert the signal to analog so you will not hear anything. Since the Motif (and many other synths with SPDIF) does not accept an external wordclock source, if you want to use SPDIF you are stuck using the Motfif as your master clock and setting your interface clock to SPDIF. Besides having to keep the Motif powered on, the clock in your interface is likely superior (less jitter) and therefore audio quality will be superior using the internal clock on the interface, but then you are stuck with analog output from the synth to your interface. (I am aware that the SPDIF sound from the Motifs is often preferred vs their analog output.) You essentially end up needing to switch the clock source on your interface back and forth between internal and SPDIF depending on whether you are using the Motif. While this isn't a solution to using SPDIF from the Motif with your interface set to internal clock, I hope this at least clears up what is happening and again, there is nothing you are doing wrong, there are only choices to be made.

@@askdrtk First of all thank you for this detailed answer. I think not even Focusrite would answer me like this. :) I love when someone is detailed and understands the core of the specific problem. It looks like I will have to switch in the Focusrite interface from Internal to S/PDIF, every time I want to use my MOTIF. I am really unhappy about this since it slows down my workflow. Even though I am using 3 midi keyboards, Push2 and Maschine Studio as well as Softube Console 1as midi input devices I love the key mechanics on my MOTIF and I like to use it as a midi keyboard and as a quality synthesizer / sound-module device. For this purpose I use midi and sound at the same time and I use it a lot and often. So switching is a real pain. Everything I want is to get the best possible sound quality from my MOTIF to my Focusrite 18i20 and the best way to do it IMO is digital and not analog. At the same time I want to be able to use MIDI. I am not sure what I have done when I had my 18i8 (1st or 2nd generation) but I know for sure that I used it in S/PDIF and MIDI mode parallel and it worked just great without switching anything. I feel a little bit pissed having 2 pieces of relatively expensive equipment, worth a lot more than 2000 EUR together and not being able to do this simple and IMO essential setup need.

All good, I'm glad to help out! I can see that it may have worked without changing the clock source on your gen 1 or 2 18i8. I have had this happen before where even though the clocks were not synced to each other everything seemed to work...doesn't happen often, more likely to happen with an individual instrument vs a mix buss, but it can happen - luck of the draw... but not as reliable as syncing up the clocks. It is a pain to switch clock sources, but I agree the overall sound quality will be better if you use SPDIF from your MOTIF vs analog, it's just something about the converters in the MOTIF that aren't quite there vs the converters in most interfaces (really a shame as otherwise (over digital) the MOTIF sounds great!

ADAT expansion to get an additional 8 inputs (and possibly anothe 8 outputs) will get you added flexibility for not only tracking, but for analogue inserts and more. A recommendation depends on what you are looking for - mic preamps, line level IO, DI. Let me know what you are planning to use the additional IO for and I will provide a few recommendations.

In that case, as a general rule it is easier to get a good blend of all band instruments and vocals when you are using the same preamps on all mics - this is how we generally record in studios with large format mixing consoles. You hear a lot about boutique preamps (1073, 512, etc.) which can be great for recording individual instrument or vocals, but for an entire band, unless you can get enough of these high-end preamps for everything (say 16 Neve 1073s- expensive...), in my opinion you are better to use the transparent preamps on the interface for recording the entire band live. You could use a Scarlett OctoPre over ADAT which would add 8 more preamp inputs and give you a total of 16 matched preamps. You could also use another 18i20 over ADAT to get the 8 extra preamps and also end up with 8 additional outputs (nice when used with a headphone amplifier to provide individual monitor mixes for each band member). Using another 18i20 is often less expensive vs purchasing the OctoPre, so I would likely go that route. To use another 18i20, you first connect it to your computer and then configure it for stand alone pass through of analogue ports over ADAT, clock, etc. as I explain in the video. Hope this helps out!

The choice comes down to how much IO you need, but the Clarett+2Pre has the same IO as the Scarlett 4i4 (plus optical input for expansion but does not have loopback). The only thing about moving up to the Clarett+ line is cost is much higher. The Clarett+2Pre is almost the same price as the Scarlett 18i20 in my area. The Clarett+ has upgraded preamps and converters, but the Scarlett 18i20 has far more IO. I will also mention that Focusrite has the Scarlett 18i20 second gen on sale for $349 usd on their website at the moment which is a great value and is only lacking the loopback feature (which you can create by connecting one cable between SPDIF in and out ports).
