SUBSCRIBE - In this video we look at the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Second Generation USB audio interface, see what's included, and set it up.
I am on Windows, so we will install the provided driver, if you are on Mac, there is no driver needed.
The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is a small, but capable USB 2.0 audio interface. It has 2 inputs that accept an XLR or 1/4" input, and 2 balanced 1/4" outputs. The unit is bus powered, meaning it is powered by the computer (no need to plug in to an outlet)
This is a well made and premium feeling audio interface, even though it's very inexpensive. The brushed aluminum shell looks great and protects the interface from damage.
It has all the features you need to get recording fast. The two included preamps have 50db of gain (which is a lot for an interface in this price range) and each input has glowing halos that alert you to your input levels. Green = Good, Red = Bad (clipping).
The 2i2 does not use the Focusrite Control software. If you want that, you need to get the 6i6 or above. But all the controls you need are right on the interface, such as direct monitoring.
The bottom line is that this interface features a lot for the money. This is an interface I would recommend if you are new to recording or you want something that is small and portable.
You'll even get a couple included DAWs, and several free plugins. Plus, every couple of months Focusrite features new free plugins for people who own Focusrite audio interfaces. We'll take a look at this in the video as well.

I have to say I’m delighted with my Focusrite bundle. Paid about £20 more for the table mic arm and pop filter. The registered number is on the box but the bundle code IS ON THE INSIDE OF THE BOX STUCK TO THE SURFACE OF THE BOX. I have GarageBand so didn’t bother with the free software and as I’ve an iMac I didn’t need the Focusrite drivers anyway. I’m recording great and the mic and pop filter are great for vocals. 10 out of 10!

This is a good demo. I would warn folks that using Windows machines, there can be a lot of adjusting the default settings on your computer. Also I am not able to use both channels at the same time, even after increasing the buffer size, and going through all of the trouble shooting doccumentation from Focusrite, this seems to be a problem with the unit needing too much current from the computer's USB port to drive both inputs, the result is if you use two channels, one of the channels will be distorted, even though the input levels are below the clipping level. No help from Focusrite.

By using to channel do you mean a mic into the lefinput and a guitar plugged into the right inputat the same time. I am new to this . I just ordered my 2i2 and will receive it around 4/8 due to the skeleton crew work force. Thanks to anyone that can amswer this.
@SeadartVSG
@SeadartVSG 4 жыл бұрын
@@konjunto2477 Yes essentially that is correct Since I posted this I have tried a large number of fixes, now the problem seems to be intermittent, (does not happen all the time). I'm not sure what parameter helped fix the problem. I stopped using a mixing box for the vocal mike before going into the 2i2, and I have my guitar pedal board going into the left channel and my vocal reverb/compression pedal going into the right. It seems there is little playroom from having a weak single to a signal that clips. Be sure to follow the set up instructions in the quick start form that comes with the interface, it gets you registered and gives you the correct update.

I don't know what software you are referring to. For Mac, you don't need the driver, just plug and play. If it's any of the other software it could be hundreds of possible problems. Could be an OS that is not supported, could be an anti-virus that is corrupting the installer, etc.. If it's a specific app, it's best to contact the manufacture directly.

Just to get it right: if I'm only recording my voice and want to hear the beat from my daw (through headphones) the only cable going from my laptop to the scarlett is a usb cable. It transfers a signal in and out? Im sorry im a tech noob, but your video was awesome and helpful!
@BenoniStudio
@BenoniStudio 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. An audio interface includes something called an A/D and D/A (Analog to Digital and Digital to Analog converter) If you were to plug a guitar into input 1, the pre-amp amplifies the signal and sends it to the converter where the analog sound is turned into digital information sent through the USB cable and recorded in your DAW. But of course we (humans) can't HEAR digital (numbers/0s & 1s) so the sound from the DAW is sent back to the audio interface via the USB cable where it turns that digital information back into analog sound that we can hear through headphones or speakers. The analog signal is essentially electrical impulses (from the interface) that cause speakers to move and create sound waves that then hit our ear drums causing the same vibration of the eardrums based on the frequency of the waveform. This eardrum vibration is then converted to electrical impulses by the auditory nerve that our brains can understand as sound, words, music, melody, notes/pitch, etc... TL;DR Yes, all you need is the USB cable. If you want to hear sound though, you must have headphones or speakers connected to the audio interface.

Hi there! I have a question and I really hope that you will see this (and reply! ;-) ) because I've asked this question in various different forums but nobody has answered or those who did just told me to get a different audio interface, one with a _send & return_ loop. I hope that _you_ can help! _(It's long, so bear with me...)_ So, here's my situation: I have a microphone, an external compressor (a dbx 166) and a small Behringer USB mixer that I use as my audio interface, as it has a USB port. I'm not very happy with the mixer because, even with the gain turned down, it has quite a bit of floor noise. So I've been looking around and I think that the Scarlett 2i2 would be perfect for what I do/need. At the moment, the way I connect everything goes like this: - Microphone into the compressor - From the compressor into the mixer - From the mixer into my computer I know, this is not ideal, to use the compressor's make-up gain as my mic pre-amp. The Scarlett, from what I've read, has great pre-amps and great converters, so I'd like to use the Scarlett not only as my audio interface but also as my mic pre-amp. The question is: how can I use my compressor in this case? Since the Scarlett 2i2 has 2 seperate inputs, I was thinking about the following but I'm not sure if this would work (hence this question to you). Here's the idea: - Microphone into the 1st input of the Scarlett - From the Line Out of the Scarlett into the Compressor - From the compressor into the 2nd input of the Scarlett - Finally, from the USB output of the Scarlett into my computer and in my DAW, only select the signal coming from the 2nd input. Would this work? My fear is that what comes back from the compressor into the 2nd input, that that signal will also go out through the Line Out, back into the compressor and create a feedback. Is there a way to seperate what comes out through the Line Out? For example, the 1st input comes out on the left side of the line out and the 2nd on the right side? Can you do that on the Scalett 2i2? OK, this was long but I wanted you to know all the details and what I was thinking about, so that you could tell me what you think. Thanks for reading all this!
@BenoniStudio
@BenoniStudio 3 жыл бұрын
My advice would be the same as what you have already heard. Get a different interface with proper inserts. I would also re-think using the external compressor. Will a plugin compressor not work? Is it a high-end vintage compressor?
@Sadlander2
@Sadlander2 3 жыл бұрын
@@BenoniStudio The compressor, it's one of the cheapest I could find, so no, it's not some valuable vintage piece of gear. When I bought the compressor, all I had was a digital 8-track recorder by Tascam. I didn't have a computer, so I recorded everything using my digital recorder only, so I had to get it right on the way in. I still do that to record the music but now that i have a laptop, I find it easier to record the vocals on a computer. I can add delay, reverb and if I need to cut or replace a part, it's a lot easier to do that in a DAW. Now that I have a laptop, actually, I use both: the external compressor on the way in, just to make sure that the volume doesn't go too high or too low. The compressor also has a gate and it works very well to get rid of some noise (like when my neighbours decide to start their washing machine or whatever just when I'm about to record vocals!). Then, after I've recorded, I use a plugin compressor to get an even more even volume. This has worked just fine so far but my problem is when I record something at a very low volume, something like almost whispering, that's when you notice the mixer's floor noise and this is the main reason why I'm thinking about getting the Scarlett 2i2. Thank you for taking the time to read my question and for your reply! I appreciate that!

However, now all my audio that ISN’T my live feed voice, is terrible. My music sounds distorted from its original sound, KZfaq videos are also distorted/cracking. I’ve made sure the drivers are updated, I’ve made sure my audio settings in my DAW (FL studio 20) are set to the “Focusrite USB” and I’ve made sure my audio settings in my control panel are set accordingly as well... AND I’ve tweaked with every knob I could and I still have terrible audio. 😔

Powered by 5v but has a 48v phantom power button, how does that work then?

A tutorial guru just said we should buy a unit that has a separate power source because the computer may not provide an adequate amount of power. What say ye? Like when we use condenser mics, we might experience lesser quality.

It's true that when drawing power from the USB port you don't always have consistent power to Phantom. But this is different with USB-C since it can supply more power. But in general, you'll be fine with a USB powered unit if thats what you want.

thanks. interesting. I thought I'd plug my guitar into my amp, get the effects I want, then plug in the amp to the interface, no?

some amps provide a direct out, but then you would need an IR loader for the cabinet unless that is included in the amp output. Generally you would put a microphone on a cabinet and record that. or just plug directly into your interface and use an amp plugin

Hi Bro...Thank you very much for your video. That helps. Recently I bought this 2i2 2nd gen. And today i did setup 2i2 with my lap top and tried to record using micro phone on ableton live 10. For some reason 2i2 is recognising my mic after switching on the phantom power. FYI..I have used quater inch jack cause i dont have XLR to connect the device. My lap top is windows 10. Could you please suggest me how to fix this issue. Except mic rest all is working fine with my 2i2 I just realized that need XLR for mic not 1/4". Thank you.

Hi:) I noticed in the comments that you know how to have effects on your voice while recording. Could you make a video explaining the process with the Scarlett 2i2? Thank you!

Just put the effects on the track in your DAW, and monitor through the DAW. Make sure the Direct Monitor is off. You may have latency though depending on the plugins.

Hello! If I use scarlet with one dynamic XLR that do not need phantom and one that require phantom power. Is it possible to turn on phantom power only on one input? 🤔

Great comprehensive review, Brian. Am I correct in thinking that the second channel on this model can produce phantom power as well for a second condenser microphone.

I’m a new beginner & I have already have Ableton live installed in my MacBook Pro Mid 2012 MacOS Catalina because it came with my M-audio controller so I wanted to know that if I buy this interface can I just plug it in & set it under in Ableton live 11 & just start recording? Because I don’t care about the free plugins because I know better free VST plugins that I can use with Ableton
