Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 vs Rodecaster Pro: USB Audio Interface Showdown

Күн бұрынWhether you want to master the Rodecaster or hop on over to the 2i2, this video will focus on what’s right with the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (3rd Generation) USB audio interface.
The Rodecaster is an all-in-one podcast recording studio, while the 2i2 is a simple way to connect an XLR mic to your computer, but it also has an incredible advantage- the XLR ports are also 1/4 inch jacks that allow you to connect a guitar, bass, or other instrument for recording music! This is my absolute favorite feature. It's a really great, simple, and high quality interface that I absolutely recommend.
And as with most audio-related videos, this one is best viewed with headphones.

The pad function on Scarlett models is great for preventing extra noise and (most) clipping.

I have the 2i2 Studio 3rd Gen, I had a dud one first but Focusright troubleshooted things for a few weeks then replaced everything (mic/headphones/2i2/cables). It's working great for streaming with a little EQ and compression, I have a quiet voice on recordings and it's working well at about 60% - 75% gain.

Tom a huge thanks for putting these videos together all while making them entertaining to watch. As someone who has recently jumped into the world of leveling up my online classes, livestreams, and workshops, I keep coming back to your content for answers, comparisons, and of course, the jokes. I'll soon be upgrading my Yeti to an SM7B, and next need to decide on the Focusrite or Rodecaster Pro. It's hard for me to see my using a Rodecaster Pro at the moment, but I love the idea of leaving room to "grow into" my gear! Though one of my concerns is trying to juggle too much while delivering the content (zoom/slack chat, slides, OBS/ecamm live, and now perhaps a rodecaster!). It seems overwhelming but perhaps that's just how it feels in the beginning :) In any case, a huge thanks for putting all your content together...your videos have helped me A TON! And I hope we can hear more jam sessions in future vids!

As for your current dilemma, the SM7B will perform the same through either interface (and will really shine with a signal booster), so it just depends on what key features you need. I think the Focusrite is an excellent choice if you don't need the recording/EQ bells and whistles of the RCP. 👍

I’m glad to hear it was helpful! Y9u can’t go wrong either, so I recommend sticking with what’s in your budget and determine if you want to record with a computer or need something like the Rodecaster that can record internally.

Super, Tom! Thanks for doing this. I started with the 2i2, still have it and use it daily. It serves me well. But ... For months I've been dreaming about the Rodecaster Pro. Now I have a much better understanding of the specific differentiation between the two units.

@@tombuck My goal set-up would allow me to co-host with another coach/trainer via Interview in Ecamm, managing the sound using the Roadcaster Pro, all going into video-call (e.g.: Zoom) for interaction with the participants. The big uncertainty: the co-host audio routing end-to-end. If that worked it would make for an amazing remote teaching set-up. What do you reckon?

My guy, this was so helpful to me!! Thank you! My wife and I have a podcast where we've been using this Focusrite since we started 2 years ago. I always wondered if my unit was broken since I've always had to turn the gain knobs wayyy up for good sound. I was looking to buy expensive Shure microphones to hopefully fix the problem but obviously I need to invest in a Rodecaster before I look at mics. Thank you for explaining all the buttons, I'm the "audio" guy and I didn't learn what gain was until today 😂

I found the video I’ve been searching for!! I bought the PodMic recently and the sound is great, but I was getting a slight hissing sound. I had no idea what to do, this video finally explains that I’m going to need a cloudlifter. 🙏🏻👍🏻

I was considering getting the focusrite scarlett when I was looking for an audio interface but after I binged watched all your vids, I went ahead & purchased a rodecaster pro & I love it so much, the focusrite scarllet still seems nice tho but I think the rodecaster pro was definitely worth it for me

Good job Tom. If it's any consolation I'm wearing headphones and I couldn't hear the noise floor at all in any test until you turned it way way way way way up. So that's actually very good information to know. Also you make me want to learn how to play guitar and that does not happen often lol

Correction: it’s plug and play (at least on the Mac). You don’t need the software. However, the software does give additional features. Also, you should utilize the DAW you’re using. You can adjust your levels in the DAW by adding gain, EQ, noise gate, etc.

You mention the ability of adding additional mics/headphones inputs with the RCP - I would love to see what the setup looks like on the rare occasions where we have to cater to 5 people. Thank you!!

It's funny you mention that- I'm starting to edit exactly that video right now so it should be out soon. I tried to make it helpful, but it ended up being the most ridiculous video I've ever made. Long story short, I connected 10 mics and 2 synthesizers to the Rodecaster 😬

Great video. I love my Scarlett 2i2. I use it in the studio now but also take it on the road when doing live events to record VOGs for events or as a playback device for my laptop during shows. Looking forward to get a Rodecaster for the studio though.

I use waves NS1 to eliminate any hiss or noise. It's absolutely amazing. I have a mic booster for my re320. But even then it's still noisey at times. I highly recommend this pluggin for anyone who can't afford a cloudlifter. It's truly magic.

Great video as always. Would love to see a review of the motu m2. I ultimately went with that instead of the Scarlett, because of 2 things: has a simple screen to monitor sound levels as opposed to just lights, and has plenty of power to run with a Podmic and no cloud lifter needed. Little more expensive, but ultimately cheaper if you don’t need to buy a cloudlifter now.

Hi there, are you using an iPad with your M2? I'm setting up a project studio around a 2021 iPad Pro (M1 USB-C) with Garage Band and I'm considering the MOTU M2/M4, the Audient ID4/14 MK II and the Focusrite Scarlet Solo 3rd Gen/2i2 3rd audio interface. From my research, it appears with all of these interfaces running on an iPad you will need to install Audiobus 3 and AUM if you want to record vocals/guitar live through the interface while also monitoring the output of Garage Band sequencer tracks and/or live instruments. If you could share your experience with the M2 if it applies to my set up it would be appreciated (I'm a long time user of MOTU products but the M2/M4 does not appear to have been designed with iOS/iPad compatibility in mind). Now that I got my Rodecaster Pro replaced by Rode, I'm loving it more. I got a Scarlett Solo to use while I was without the Rodecaster Pro, and I really, really like it. Paired with the cloudlifter and the Rode Procaster, it sounds great.

you can but it's not very intuitive for people new to professional audio and can that can very easily lead to someone accidentally frying the interface when it comes to music i recommend the m-audio 192|6 air due to it's dedicated instrument inputs

I’m using the Solo & PodMic without a cloud lifter or anything and have to crank the gain to 3 o’clock or so. The noise is manageable in post for sure, but that’s interesting to hear the pre-amp difference between the Scarlett and the Rodecaster. I also sort of cheated and bought an XLR to 1/4” to add in another mic when needed. Works pretty well in a pinch.

Hi Tom, first of all, I have been watching your podcast for nearly a year now...I’m hooked! I love your presentation style and the variety in the topics you present. I am a huge Rode fan and have a couple of their microphones, and their excellent mic arm (purchased following your video on those). You have me convinced that a Rodecaster is in my near future acquisitions. I wanted to let you know that I have been using the Focusrite Scarlett 8i8 for some time to create multi track music videos and have been very happy with it. I do my post production in Adobe Premiere Pro which is an incredible audio/video production application. Thanks again for the fantastic podcasts...keep ‘em coming!! Thought you might like to know that your audience is international...I live in southern France.

I have an AT2020 XLR mic and the Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD, 2-channel audio interface. it works well for me but like you showed above, I usually do have to have the gain up pretty high on the Behringer. Nonetheless, I bring it into Audacity, throw on a compressor, noise reduction, EQ and limiter and the sound comes out great. Less than $200.

For under $200 that's an awesome setup. I think there are very few devices that would really crank out the gain in this price category, but like you've shown, there are lots of ways around that 👍

i paid for rode to future proof my production - at the moment its very basic i use it for XLR capture without a computer using the power brick connector, its super convenient and i use velcro to stick the brick like you - just make sure your power brick meets requirements because my bricks only met the power requirements when at full charge and wouldnt power the rode when battery was under half charged

We’ve had both the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and the Behringer Uphoria UMC 204 units for our podcast and the Behringer uphoria 204hd is much better. It has Better pre-amps, a much quieter noise floor, and even better headphone volume (if you need it)... The 2i2 doesn’t have the best noise floor... The Behringer unit is cheaper too...and made of metal and very robust too... no software needed to make it work either...:). We now mainly use the Rodecaster Pro because we always have at least 3 of us.. :)

I use the Focusrite 2i2 to host an Amazon Live stream. Super easy to use and sounds great. Connected to the Deity Connect Wireless Lav receiver, I almost never go above the 12 o'clock position on the dial.

I love both this and my Rode caster pro. If you can spend the money, go for the Rodecaster. If you are on a budget, go for this interface. Also, the Focusrite is great for instruments. Great video Tom, like always. 😉

I'm not quite sure how the podcaster will do for narration as it is meant mostly for live/Radio. The Scarlett is really good, but this is a no contest for sure. Also something to keep in mind is that the Scarlett is more for instrumental.

I use a Rode Broadcaster condenser mic. Excellent proximity effect and background noise rejection. Sounds beautiful. Worth a look.

@@tombuck I went through a similar process. I tried the Rode Procaster to get more of a close-in radio type sound, but needed a Fethead to get enough gain with my Allen & Heath ZED60. It worked well, but I also found that the dynamic was more prone to interference so I tried the Broadcaster. It’s more expensive, but it sounds so much nicer. You can really hear the difference. The Broadcaster is a really lovely mic. Recommended.

If you're recording bass, for instance, you can go direct-in through one channel, and set up a mic pointed at the strings near the nut for the other channel. You can then process either or both channels as you like, and the mix them down. You can often get interesting effects that way. And that is why, for music, you want at least two inputs, ideally where both accept XLR mic inputs. The fact that the unit doesn't have enough pre-amp gain for common dynamic mics is a problem in a real-world situation, where you don't have an acoustically-treated room/studio, which would make condenser mics practical (and probably, desirable).

Honestly still a great performer with the PodMic. Any hiss was barelyy noticeable through the video at a comfortable listening level. I have an Evo4 and I would actually have preferred getting a Scarlett 2i2

I've been a gen 1 and 2 Focusrite 2i2 user since forever and i'm really surprised that it took so much added lift to get the output you were looking for. I use (both XLR) an MXL 990 and a Blue Bluebird and both need the knob to be at about 1 o'clock to sound nice and present. the CAD 12 (Directionnal) does require a lot of gain added, but it's not Phantom powered so it maybe explains it. Thank you for the info and I like your style! (oh never mind yours are not condenser mics HAHA, note to self: I need to finish your video before commenting on it)

Phantom Powered condensers will definitely not need as much gain, but for dynamics, this is pretty normal in my experience.

I sold my Rodecaster v1 since I have been using a DBX 286 to process my voice and considered using a Scarlett 2i2 for input device. However, after watching this and Mike Russell with MRC, I feel that just buying a new Rodecaster Pro v2 is probably ideal since it appears cheaper (and possibly more efficient) in the long-term not having to include multiple devices in my recording chain.

Thanks for showing how the cloud lifter works. I was close to upgrading my yeti to a new mic but the extra money on a cloud lifter I'm not sure if it's worth it since I don't make money streaming nor do I stream that often. I noticed that without the cloud lifter you said it could work but you get hissing/ambient sounds that are more noticeable without the cloud lifter and the volume maxed. I use the Scarlett Solo with a Beyerdynamic 880 headphones (250 ohms). I pretty much max out the volume to really hear certain songs or even in games. Is it fair to assume that my Scarlett solo probly isn't strong enough to provide a proper sound with my headphones? This is all assumption because I'm maxed out dialed to 5oclock on my Scarlett. Never used garageband before, but do you get to decide how you want your guitar to sound in that last 15:40? LOVE that greenday solo! I saw them live just recently at the dodgers stadium. By the way, your channel is dangerous for those who are getting into the streaming/podcasting world! LOL. Makes me want to get back into streaming again and just spend all my money haha. Great content though! Gave you a sub.

First, the RC Pro is amazing. However, the 2i2 also works great if you need headphone monitoring. Example, the Samson Q2U has built in headphone support, but to make it usable, the on board preamps create “buzz” in the audio. Using the 2i2 allows for a pretty simple solution for headphone monitoring without the “buzz”, which makes the 2i2 a relatively inexpensive solution.

The biggest thing is the Rodecaster Pro doesn’t have its own sound card, it just uses inputs from different sources. That means if you’re attempting to use the Rodecaster as an audio interface, you’ll still be using your computer’s sound card to do so, which uses memory. Best thing you can do is use an interface in conjunction with the Rodecaster Pro.
