In this video, I will be doing an honest review and unboxing of the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 third-generation USB-C audio interface. The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 is a USB-C-powered audio interface with 4 inputs and 4 outputs.
I will show you how to set up this audio interface, and go through all its functions, as well as the software functions, including loopback setup. I'm using FL Studio in this video, but this works in other DAWs too.
The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd gen brings some new and useful features over the previous model. Here are some of the key features:
The Scarlett 4i4 (3rd gen) brings a new feature to the Scarlett lineup and that's Loopback. This is a software/digital input that allows you to bring in any software on your computer (ex: Skype for podcast interviews) and record that input onto its own separated channel in your DAW.
The third generation Scarlett 4i4 now comes with USB-C as standard.
The preamps of the 4i4 have also been improved and provide more gain compared to previous models.
The air and pad feature is still there, although it has been moved into the software instead. The physical buttons are no longer found on the front of the audio interface.
This is going to be an honest review after using the Scarlett 4i4 audio interface for more than 6 months. I made sure to shoot the unboxing when I first got it, so I've included that in the video as well. I'll cover all the pros and cons of this audio interface, based on my experience with it over the past 6 months.
Scarlett 4i4 key features:

I also have a 2i2. Actually I have 2. The loopback option for the 4i4 is a convenience but you can accomplish the same thing and much more using Voice Meeter which is free.
@FireWalkMusic
@FireWalkMusic 2 жыл бұрын
@@aemythjensen The loopback function is a "nice to have", but as you say, you can do the same thing with software. The main difference between the various audio interfaces is mostly the inputs and outputs. When it comes to sound quality, they're all good and there's really no noticeable difference there. :) The solo for example is very similar, except that it has fewer in and outs, and a shared circuit for headphones and monitors in order to drive down the cost. :) I've seen some people find it annoying that you can't control the headphones separately on the solo, and in that case, a 2i2 or a 4i4 for example could be an alternative. :)

Thanks for the review. I’m considering the Focusrite 4i4 (3rd Gen) or Motu M4. Did you rule out that Motu or other Motu models for some reason? Are there reasons why you prefer the 4i4 over a Motu M4 or M6? I haven’t yet been able to find out if 1 is more reliable than the other to work properly for years without developing a major problem that pretty much makes the unit worthless. As we know, the Motu M4 & M6 have LED meters. An owner reported that right of the box some of the pixels didn’t illuminate on his M4. Do you know if that type of problem tends to get worse over time? Regarding the Focusrite knob for setting recording levels, do you know if the LED rings showing green, yellow & red tend to go out over time? Do you know what is the most common hardware problem that makes 4i4’s pretty much worthless because it would be too expensive to repair? A reason I am considering Focusrite is because the warranty is 3 years. Do you know if Focusrite has a good or bad reputation for standing behind their stated warranty? Thanks for your help.
@FireWalkMusic

@@LoneTinaja Hi! Those two are very similar in terms of specs. The two major reasons I went with the 4i4 is because I have experience with Focusrite going years back, and I know them to be reliable over time. It's also cheaper than the M4, but still has the same features, except for the LEDs. However, I've tried the M4 before and didn't really find the LEDS to be particularly useful. It's more of a gimmick. The LEDS on the 4i4 work well and gives you all the info you need, and I haven't experienced them going out over time. I can't say anything about repairs because I wouldn't know, as I've never needed to have mine repaired. I did have some problems with a Focusrite SOLO that I tested a few years ago though. Turned out I had accidentally installed the wrong driver for it, so it was my own fault. Anyways, I contacted Focusrite customer support and they were very fast to reply, and really helpful in solving the issue, so their customer support was top-notch, which is another reason why I stuck with Focusrite for my latest audio interface. :)

@@FireWalkMusic - thank you so much for your reply. It is important for me to read that you didn’t find the M4 LEDs to be particularly useful, plus the 4i4 LEDs work well. So, I’m ruling out the M4. Thanks again.

The solo is good too. It works well for most "in the box" producers, which is the typical fl studio user. The main difference is that the solo has fewer inputs and outputs compared to the 4i4, and no loopback function. The solo also has a shared circuit for the monitors and headphones, while the 4i4 has a dedicated headphones circuit and volume knob for the headphones. :)

Honestly the 2i2 is enough. Also like the fact that the 2i2 allows you to switch the air setting by hardware rather than software. This is especially useful if you're a Linux user and using a third-party DAW.

@@Edgarcoste Yes, I finally bought the 5i6 I believe (4 audio front and 6 line behind). The Focusrite software is great to manage what you plugged into the interface. So if you buy the 4i4 make sure the instrument you want to plug in line (behind) has a volume knob so that you won't be limited (compared to the audio input front where you can adjust the volume directly on the interface). Hope that helps!

@FireWalkMusic 2 жыл бұрын
I've tried many audio interfaces over the years, and there are always subtle differences in the output gain, but I've never found it to be really noticeable. I have both my monitors set at 50% volume, and even when playing quite loud, I never seem to go beyond 50% on the monitor knob on the audio interface. If I were to crank up both the monitors and the audio interface knob near max, I would probably end up with permanent hearing loss, or I'd blow out the speakers :) I find it strange that you're not getting enough volume. Sounds like there must be something wrong with your audio interface, or perhaps some of the settings in the software have been changed so that the output is too quiet. What kind of monitors are you using?

Exactly I have the same audio interfaces (booth like you. :) My very big problem (but this is the only one) of the 4i4, that many times, and I don't know why, doing that, if I listening music on Winamp or KZfaq, or using FL Studio, if it finds any "ghost" frequency (I can't describe it better :D ) that it perceives to be harmful to the speaker or what, it will suddenly switch off for a few seconds and then switch back on by itself. Very annoying, especially if I'm in the flow. Do you have any solution for this?
@FireWalkMusic
@FireWalkMusic 2 жыл бұрын
There's no built-in circuitry for that. It's probably being caused by something else in your setyp. I've found that in most cases when people have problems with playback in windows, or find that a track sounds different after being rendered out from their DAW, it's usually being caused by some third-party application like sound enhancers, 3d sound etc. :)

USB-powered audio interfaces have limited power frmo the USB port and they officially support up to 200-ohm headphones. I've used higher-impedance headphones than that in the past though, so 250 ohms shouldn't be any problem. It might be slightly quieter, but it will still be plenty loud. Once you get up to 600+ ohms then I would start thinking about getting an external amp.

Regarding problems, I usually see people having various problems with most audio interfaces. It's usually due to some kind of conflict, using the wrong driver etc. In some cases the driver simply isn't any good, but this will usually get resolved by an update, and is usually something you risk if you buy a brand new product. If you buy something that has been on the marked for a while then at least you can rest assured that the driver is good (usually). As for the Apolli Twin X, I see some people praising it, and others talk about crackling sound. It could very well be the same thing I'm experiencing if the asio buffer is set too high. It might simply be a windows issue, because it does occur in the DAW, only in windows. Reducing it to default takes care of the problem.

Make sure you are using a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port, and that you are using the provided asio driver (Focusrite usb). Set the buffer as low as you can. Bluetooth wouldn't be all that recommended if your using them to mix your work due to the latency. The headphone input is recommended and listen through the monitors/speakers

I feel really dumb. All I needed to do was set it to playback through the software I'm using (Audacity) and I can use whatever headphones I want through my computer. Slowly figuring this stuff out, emphasis on "slowly". lol Thank you for the lightbulb moment!

So close and yet so far. If only it had four pre-amps and two headphones. That would open up it's appeal to more organic music and not just the bedroom EDM people.
