I always felt some magic when throwing a slow paper airplane that resists to landing, "trying" to go up again after go down to gain speed. Darts are fast and go beyond, but I do prefer flying time duration

Another difference between darts and gliders is that Wraith use darts but Goa'uld use gliders. If you know what I mean.

When I was young I made a dart stunt plane that would do a constant aileron roll throughout its flight. I originally called it the barrel roll plane due to the fact that it was inspired by star fox with "Do a barrel roll!" I had later learned that the manuver was called an aileron roll which is commonly confused with a barrel roll.

Thickness and size of the paper is an important factor on this issue. I liked A4 for gliders and a bit thinner A5 for darts. Once a friend made an A1 dart, and got it to fly, which was quite a sight.

I've always found gliders to be better in general for everything besides raw speed. But speed doesn't matter when a dart nosedives half the time. Maybe gliders are more forgiving of imperfect folds, but then again good design is forgiving of mistakes.

The issue with a lot of these is that paper planes fly in multiple different flight regimes in one flight. At lower speeds, air is "sticky" and this decreases the efficiency of the front section of wings at those speeds.

You know what you're talking about! At high speeds, air breaks off at the nose and barely touches the main wings, but as the plane slows down, the air adheres to the length of the plane. John Collins took advantage of this in his design of Suzanne to break the record.

Darts are also better at well, being darts. Because their trajectories are more predictable and they fly faster thanks to the hard throws put behind them, they're always fun for tapping a friend on the back or aiming for a target.

I made a fun plane a while ago with four wings. The top wings were glider in shape and the bottom wings were short but wide and acted like landing gear. If you threw it down it would do a loop but if you threw it gently it would glide. It worked better when made of construction paper so it was a heavy plane.

I think it just depends on what "better" means to you. Darts fly faster, gliders have a better glide ratio.

All I'm saying is that you're expressing a personal preference. If someone else thinks that the quality of a plane is determined by how far it flies, they might say, "In general, darts fly better than gliders." Neither of you would be wrong. You're just using different parameters for the word "better".

So here's a question, what kind of performance can you get with cutting planes down? I imagine a glider can be turned into innumerable unusual planes by adjusting the trail part part of the wing. Personally, I'm thinking almost hydrodynamic designs, with lots of body lift and stubby wings/control surfaces like a flat, stubby dolphin. Somehow, doing this to darts seems me to be less effective. =\

I found one paper plane that starts as a glider but then if you make 2 simple folds along the side of each wing it becomes a stunt plane. I called it the Viper cause it hade a slight indent in the front edge if you folded it tightly.

Guys i invented this one paper airplane design that i created it myself which covers all the class. It can use for distannt flying if you throw it hard. It can also used for airloaft because i could glide long enough in the sky. It can also do tricks.

I prefer darts because I built one called the Hornet which’s my own design, that is just INSANE!! There are ways to transform a dart to a glider. You can flatter it partially, slightly change it and it may work. - hyper casual planer

Yep. Giving a dart wider wings can sometimes be enough to make it a glider.

normaly i use some kind between Darts and Gliders but im more in to Gliders because they are fun and you can change shape of wing so it curves it flight and even come back to you

I had a plane that I made in 5th grade that had the properties of a dart when thrown but mid flight it would open in a V shape and glide the rest of the way

Good morning Kyle, great video, especially for me since I have just taken an interest in paper planes, I think I like a mix of all three categories as well with Gliders slightly edging the pack, when are we going to see Invictus and Monarch they both look like great folds, thanks for sharing
