I recently ordered four books shown in this video: 'Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales', 'East of the Sun, West of the Moon' (Kay Nielsen is a favourite among the Golden Age illustrators, so lucky I got my hands on a copy), 'Aesop's Fables' and 'Arabian Nights'. I really want to collect some of my favourite fairy tales, myths and legends so this video was great for that! :-)

Fantastic choices, I'm sure you will love them. I find fairy tales, myths and legends books are particularly lovely to own because they are very re-readable, and relate to so many different audiences. (And Kay Nielsen was absolutely an artistic genius - his artwork is timeless.)

Thanks! Do you collect FS books as well? Their bindings are always so distinctive when you see them on a shelf! Do you have a ‘favourite’ book or set? (I know, I know, that’s like asking someone to choose a favourite child, but still...)

I first saw this video as part of a hunt for information regarding Folio Society books. Soon after seeing your other video about the Andrew Lang Rainbow series (which is HORRIBLY expensive to acquire second-hand as a full set - currently on ebay a complete 12 edition set is @ US$3600), I now have almost 40 Folio Society titles. I also have a number of Heritage Press titles (very nice art there as well). Of the 10 books listed in this video, I have 7, missing the 2 Shakespeare titles (not so much of a fan) and hunting a prime condition copy of 'a wonder book for girls & boys'. I'm really proud of the ones I have, I also have a copy of 'Pinocchio illustrated by Grahame Baker-Smith. You're also quite right, to grow a collection with really high quality editions is quite the time-buster, but well worth the wait. Cheers!! '

Yes, these books are ridiculously expensive second-hand right now, but I do think there is a reasonable chance that FS will reprint them some time in the future - in fact, they just brought the Blue Fairy book back again to coincide with their increased Charles van Sandwyk offerings, which is a good sign. Building a collection is a lot of fun, and I quite enjoy the hunt for books - it makes the payoff so much more enjoyable! I have many Heritage Press books as well, they had some really interesting designs - some of the HP books even have hand-tinted illustrations! Good luck with your search for the Wonder Book 😃💕

@@BeautifulBooks Thanks very much for the kind sentiments. I've recently been scouring Ebay & seen Easton Press books. Seem pretty expensive too; until one goes to Easton's website - heart-stopping pricing, but excellent art! Sigh... so many books, so little time... and money 😏 Cheers!

Could you make a comparison video of the Folio Society and Taschen editions of East of the Sun, West of the Moon? A copy of the FS edition showed up in my area and am very tempted, but the Taschen version looks like such a great celebration of Kay's art! Which one would you recommend?
@BeautifulBooks

Bruce Burns Sure, I’ll get it up in the next couple of days for you! Both books are beautiful, so it if course depends a bit on your personal tastes. The FS one is a facsimile, and one of their gems. It will have their typical longevity. The production values for the Taschen aren’t quite as good (e.g. the cardboard slipcase is beautiful but flimsy) but I do think the contents are superior. It has a fantastic introduction with additional artwork that isn’t in the FS edition. And the text has been gorgeously re-set - very sensitive to the original, but clear and spacious and a real joy to read. Let me know what you decide!

Could you make a comparison video between Calla Editions' Grimm's Fairy Tales and Folio Society's Grimm's Fairy Tales?
@BeautifulBooks
@BeautifulBooks 5 жыл бұрын
Hi - sorry for the late reply (my comments notification thingy doesn't appear to be working and I only just saw your request!). I only have the FS edition for Grimm because I thought it was much nicer than the Calla edition for this volume - both are based on the British edition of 1909 , but I have looked at the Calla one, and I can give you a quick written comparison here if that helps? The binding illustrations are the same, with FS using blue buckram and Calla using a slightly lighter weight green cloth. Both have the same illustrated endpapers, but FS uses a heavier weight paper stock than Calla so the FS book is thicker. The FS version is a facsimile of the original containing all the stories, while the Calla is a selection and missing several stories (some of the less well known ones, e.g. Hans in Luck, Old Sultan). Both editions include all 40 colour plates (the FS website lists only "38", but this is because they only count the in-text illustrations and the two extra are provided as frontispieces - a Folio numbering quirk!). The FS edition includes all of Arthur Rackham's b&w illustrations as well as the text decorations (I love his tiny goblins, so there are a must for me), while Calla include his b&w illustrations but not all the text designs - this is because the FS facsimile has most of the story titles in plain type, but a small number have Rackham designed headings. Calla on the other hand have designed new story titles for each story (a full page for each one, with a coloured drop cap for the intro), which are lovely but do not include Rackham's art. (Note: you're not missing a lot here, it's mostly relevant only if you're a huge Rackham fan!). One thing Calla does better is that all the colour images can be viewed without turning your head - some of the FS ones are landscape rather than portrait (because it's a facsimile and that was a printing requirement for the original edition). I hope this helps! I can put some photo comparisons on the website if you need more, let me know. xx

Do you happen to know if there's any other edition of Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch "In powder and crinoline/the twelve dancing princesses and other fairy tales" besides the one by Calla or the original expensive antiques?
@BeautifulBooks
@BeautifulBooks 4 жыл бұрын
hector roberto contreras miranda There are a couple of cheaper editions available second-hand, although the image reproduction quality isn’t quite as good - Hodder & Stoughton UK released one (In Powder and Crinoline) in 1979, and Portland House US released one (Twelve Dancing Princesses) in 1988. There were some reprints in the 1920s and 30s as well, but they have a reduced number of coloured plates.

@@BeautifulBooks thank you, so basically until taschen decides to give it the same treatment it gave East of the sun we're not getting a good printing of the illustrations? Or maybe FS? I found the Calla edition to be wonderful but compared to the few illustrations that also appear in East of the sun the they are clearly inferior

Hi, thank you for the video, is Grimm's fairytales a childrens edition or does it have the original horrible endings?
@BeautifulBooks

They are the 'original' versions of the tales, so definitely a bit gruesome (e.g. in Aschenputtel, their version of Cinderella, the stepsisters are blinded by birds at the end).

Great video! I look forward to the next one! About the books: I want them all... I love the way you organized them as a collection. I think I'll buy the Taschen East of the Sun edition during my next trip to the US, but if I change my mind I'll definitely use your affiliate link. This is, in my opinion, the best way to compensate content creators on KZfaq. BTW I foresee your channel contributing to my bankruptcy. It is a pity that buying second hand is very difficult to me (because I live in Brazil). Shipping costs are high, and sometimes the books just don't arrive! Can you imagine how I suffer? lol
@BeautifulBooks
@BeautifulBooks 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Definitely take a look at the Taschen edition (I actually think the layout/images/extra material in the Taschen is far superior, although the binding of the FS edition is much more durable - the Taschen has a very pretty but very flimsy cardboard "slipcase" that I foresee will not survive much handling). And I live in Australia, so I FEEL YOUR PAIN on shipping! I am forever seeing wonderful 2nd hand bargains in the US only to have the cost triple or worse when you factor in shipping (or, sometimes they won't even consider shipping internationally - probably because so many parcels go missing en route). I have found though that shipping is usually much more affordable from the UK (I think the Royal Post must subsidise their mail?) so it's worth comparing in case this is true for you too. (In fact, it is often cheaper to ship a book all the way from the UK to Australia than it is to ship a book just from one state to another using our internal postal system - how crazy is that?) A lot of my books are 2nd hand (supporting my "champagne taste on a beer budget" as they say) - I quite enjoy tracking down vintage books and giving them a new loving home!
