Here is my Folkcraft Folkroots D - diatonic mountain dulcimer. I’ve named it The Goat and I explain it in the video. It’s got a 27” VSL, and is made of black walnut and butternut. One gorgeous feature, the natural knot holes in the wood used as sound holes. Beautiful! I’ve strung it up currently with a small octave string at the bass (so there are 2 strings at the bass).

Hi Mandy! I am so glad that you are supportive of the D-A-A tuning!!! I have a beautiful dulcimer that was built by Warren May. I LOVE playing it!! I don't think D-A-A gets enough love in the dulcimer community, but it should! It's a lovely tuning that comes with its own challenges, especially when you play chords! I love your new instrument!!! It's gorgeous!!! Enjoy!!!

Yes agree, it needs more love and attention. I will do my best to give it equal time - now that I have one.

Hi Mandy, I really appreciate when dulcimer enthusiasts support DAA tuning. I live in the Appalachian region of Ohio directly across the Ohio river from Kentucky and I actually learned DAA first because that was the popular tuning when I started in 2001. I have 3 diatonic locally made dulcimers and only 1 DAD tuned dulcimer. Thanks for all you do!

Awesome thanks for sharing that. All dulcimers are great in my opinion. I’m so grateful I found one in 2010!

Beautiful Dulcimer! I love the sound of the mountian dulcimer, I got a beginner's one when I was 12, and have had much fun playing it for the past 5 years. Keep putting out videos of Dulcimers and Hymns!

I like the shortest vsl possible, so I play noter style on my dulcimers that have the longer vsl.

@@BanjoLemonade you too! Also before practice at church I went to go change my strings, and one of my bridge pegs was cracked so I had to superglue back together. I ran to the grocery store to get it and held up. God came through as always but they wondered why I was off during practice or why I sounded out of tune because I didn’t have enough time to get my strings to be properly seated. Once done with practice, I got my strings seated properly, and was able to hold proper tones for the strings. I’ll worked out. Thanks to God. Have a blessed day.

How is the stretch feeling on the “27 inch? I have small hands too (normally play 25”). But there’s a 27” dulcimer in the Folkcraft shop that is tempting….lol.

Just my opinion here but it, depends on what you want to do with it. I normally play a 25” for DAD. BUT - I absolutely love the 27” VSL for DAA playing. I don’t play many chords on it (mostly droning and a few chords). It’s also a good thing to mention I’m not much of a thumb player (it never felt natural to me to use the thumb). Also - I’m sure you saw the resonator too - that is a 23” VSL and it BY FAR is my favorite VSL for comfort on my hands (first time playing such a smaller vsl and it feels soo good). And it’s chromatic also, and I don’t have any issue with them being ‘too close’. Sorry I’m not much help here. BUT - if play lots of chords and want to do fast flat-picking, I’d not go with the 27”. If you’d like to discuss more you can shoot me an email.
