Hello, bit different this week.
First off -- I have a discord now. Just getting started, but link is in the description and everyone is welcome to join.
There I post further information, answer questions, and provide development info that doesn't make it into these videos.
For this update, I want to show you the start of a major overhaul to the cargo system.
Probably the biggest piece of feedback i've received is comparing the cargo system in this game to the highly interactive one seen in Sailwind.
I want to be clear that while I like Raw Lion's system there -- I have never intended to replicate that system in Following Seas.
This is a separate project with separate goals.
I've gone with a grid system for cargo, where a ship can have multiple areas dedicated to cargo. It may be a bit restrictive, but allows for more efficient placement of large amounts of game objects. The Saettia for example can carry
about 300 crates, so there needs to be some optimization there compared to being fully physics based bodies.
Cargo weight is positional, so it's not just adding to hull weight, but adding its weight at its position within the hull.
Task logic has been changed so that accepting a task does not load any cargo, but rather leaves loading up to the player. For this video I've done some cheating so that loading and unloading are done at the same point, but of course typically you can only load cargo when docked or very near the origin point, and vice versa for unloading.
You can then use a new object I call the cargo manifest to begin loading cargo. You can load as much as you'd like, including mixing and matching from multiple tasks if desired. The task is persistent, so You can deliver partial loads and return to port for multiple trips.

I never liked Sailwinds handling of cargo, so I'm glad you're working on an alternative.

Me too. The main reason I stopped playing it. Get‘s annoying to run back and forth even if we are talking about only few boxes.

Soon TM. I'm hoping before the end of the year, if not well before. There's a couple of big blockers in the way that I view as essential prior to any early access.

Are we gonna be able to switch cargo from one point to another while sailing? I mean for example if I'd like to change the main weight from port to starboard because wind is strong from that side

I don't mind a little game of minecrft in the hull of my ship if that looks as cool as it seems in other aspects :D

Will ships like brig, schooner and other small ships like that be added?

I haven't settled on the extent of ships that will be available. However, the focus at this point is going to be on Lateen, Junk, and similar sailplans. This is because the system I use for sails is highly complex and dynamic, and simply will not scale well for ships with 10+ sails or fully rigged ships. Don't expect HMS Victory ha. In addition I want to focus on Mediterranean ships along with parts of Asia/India -- as I feel these get under represented in the limited amount of sailing games we get. Had enough of the Caribbean personally.

@@2eightnine a galley would be really nice (less storage ,can move independant from wind maby frontfacing cannons if there will be combat) it maby isnt good enough for high seas tho and you would need rowman. but still it would be epic

@@wonnijohn2765 I've actually considered some varieties of galley. Not sure they will make it in since I don't currently have a combat or crew system -- but definitely not off the table.
