I met a Dutch grandma in Amsterdam and she wanted to show me her Amsterdam Canal House at a prime location. She has been living in that house for 64 years! Watch on this video what happened after that. #amsterdam #amsterdamhouses #amsterdamcanalhouse #netherlands

you see all the thimbles in a wooden rack, that rack was not made for this but to house typesetting lead letters for letterpress printing. As this type of printing became obsolete the wooden type cases were re-used as decorative wall pieces that could be filled with all kinds of "prullaria" (knick knacks) in this case a collection of thimbles.

Even. Though I grew up in Holland and lived with one flight of stairs, I was shocked by the steepness of grandma’s stairs as well as three flights more for bathrooms, bedroom and kitchen. How can she live like that, does she have to go up and down to cook or go to bed! Also the top level, zolder, seems to be exposed to moisture on the walls, sad to see.

@Blackadder75
@Blackadder75 14 сағат бұрын
@Widdekuu91
@Widdekuu91 6 сағат бұрын

This is very exceptional. Those canalhouses are mostly office spaces and bought and sold for profit. If I was Mrs. Marijke i would sell it for as much as possible, and buy a nice one story house. She has options owning a canal house! I understand she is emotionally attached, but she is not getting any younger.

What a nice lady and such a charasteristic house. Thanks for the upload! So she lived in a real Amsterdam canal house since the sixties! Bet she has some interesting stories to tell 🙂I hope she can live there in good health for a long time to come! 🙂 What a privilige compared to modern days though. A house like that, in the current state basically without a kitchen and bathroom and in need of a makeover, would sell for 750.000 euro's within a week probably. All her neighbours younger than 65 years old are millionaires 😆

An authentic Amsterdam canal house like this with several floors will go for 2 million at least. And that is only because of the condition it's in and needing a lot of renovation. If it is renovated you will pay about 3-4 million. Or more.... Location and the historic qualities are key and also the prestige of living in an Amsterdam canal house don't come cheap because demand for a house like this is CRAZY high and not a lot offered in Amsterdam these days.

There was a time when no one wanted to live there, I still wouldn't. After some renovation it would now cost about a million or more per floor In the 1980s I considered buying an entire building, but the leasehold was too high, the price then converted into euros was €195,000 for an object much better than what can be seen in this vlog. I don't regret not buying the property then, Amsterdam is become a communist hellhole for the Dutch. This lady is probably renting the property under the old rental scheme and pay more or less €300,- I think even less... The real owner makes his profit by renting out the shop, the house is a deadtrap in case of a fire or the lady falls down, which has happened very often in the past and still will be, God forbidden!
