Font Follows Feeling - A brief type classification and the moods they create

Күн бұрынKnowing what broad genres of typefaces exist and what feelings they evoke, can be a handy tool to dig through the tons of available fonts out there. This video will give you a broad overview, what kind or mood each font category evokes and for what sorts of text it is suited. Font follows feeling, baby!

TL;DW: Categorizing type is hard and only helpful to a certain degree. Sans-serif, serif and slab serif typeface can work for all sorts of text. Sans is perceived more modern, serif more traditional, slab serif can be both. Script, handwritten and display fonts mostly work for short and large applications, and are more striking and thematic. Eventually you have to find your own typographic vocabulary.

great instruction. wondering why the output sans belong to the display? btw my default KZfaq speed is 1.5x yet your channel 1.75x :D

Thank you, Nathan! Great question about Output Sans - that’s not that obvious. The specific weight (light) I would add to display fonts, since it’s too weak for body text. But I did not make that very clear, and it’s pretty confusion now when I look at it. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the question, Fernanda! Depending on for what kind of text. I’d say for a display text Bungee is rather clunky, for body text FF Beowolf is one that comes to my mind. But it depends on for what purpose you want it. And, of course, there are gray ares, but I’d say it should be something that’s rather bold and not that exact, maybe. Hope that helps!

Love, that you paid attention to that, Alex! Unfortunately I neither can read nor write Russian but I treasure typography in any script. The book was a gift by the lovely Vadim Makeev, organizer of the pitercss conference where I had the honor to speak back in 2019. Miss those days … 😍
