We love our chickens and I don’t need to have 36 hens and 6 chicks hatching out in my incubator this evening. But, the last two weeks we have taken fresh, cage free eggs to a food pantry and they were delighted to get them. They said people are always asking if they have eggs to give out. So, the two dozen eggs I get a day will be heading to this food pantry every Thursday when they pass out food from this church. I am blessed to be able to share our abundance.

Today Save A lot was selling chicken drumsticks in five lb bags for five ninety nine and I bought two. Boned them out and canned the meat and cut the bone in two so that the marrow can be accessed and made chicken broth in the Instant Pot. I plan on doing this again later in the week. I have a small budget to buy food to donate weekly, I am limited due to being retired and living on a fixed budget. I buy protein foods as that is what they get the least of, the food bank director has asked me to buy eggs as they just don't get them. So every week I go to Walmart and buy bulk eggs. I do this because I starved as a child and know what it is like to be a child and hungry. Maybe adults get the eggs but I keep the image of a child in my mind.

GARDENS & CHICKENS Both should be allowed...even incentivized. A little experiment in a European city gave out chickens to those who wanted them. Within the first year their landfill reported a massive reduction in waste tonnage, to the tune of millions of pounds...all thanks to chickens eating scraps. Reports of food bank usage also dropped, as people with abundance shared their harvest with those less fortunate. It IS a win, win scenario.

Here in the US, food banks let anyone/everyone take food. The problem is that so many of these folks don't financially need to come to a food bank- and they're proud of what they're able to get for free. I'm very serious, there are no qualifications or registration for the food banks. I'm always concerned when I hear of the shortages because so many people take what others truly need.

@@hardtimeslifelessons5677People are using foodbanks for prepping. We've had people that went to food banks give us food because they didn't want what was in the boxes. Macaroni and cheese, Restaraunt sized cartons of soup, canned fruit, rice, shelf stable milk, you name it! I couldn't believe it! There are a lot of people going that aren't really in dire straits. Back in late 1990's, we hit a rough spot when my husband was on Workman's Comp. Discovered a "trading network" within the community that went to foodbanks. They would shop several foodbanks each week. I was given tons of boxes of food because their cabinets were too full. So, they were only going to get specific items not truly because they were hungry.

ANECDOTAL POVERTY ISSUE My brother has had six surgeries in the past two years. So, as you can imagine, recovery time has left him unemployed. To top all of this off they have had two car accidents, having to borrow one of our cars. After emptying our freezer to help feed his three girls, he has had to repeatedly use the food bank to supplement their food supply. If it wasn't for bad luck, he'd have none at all. Now I am of permanent disability, after suffering an accident that left me temporarily paralyzed. My disability benefits are just over $1000.00 a month. So, my wife has to work two jobs in order for us to live. As it stands, all of my money goes to food and fuel, leaving nothing left, right after receiving my disability deposit. The only way I can help my children, who are all adults now, is to make them some dinners. It is not much, but I do what I can. If Trudeau is elected for another four year term, I will be making regular trips to the food bank.

I found myself for the first time in the lines for the food bank in 2020. It was a godsend at the time. We regularly got cheese, eggs, butter, frozen meat, a few cans of fruit or vegetables and lots of fresh vegetables. When the "leadership" changed, we would get 2 gallons of milk, 15lbs of potatoes, 5lb bags of carrots, 3lbs of frozen chicken parts, 5lb boxes of breaded chicken nuggets, cases of macaroni and cheese. Not really a lot of variety to make meals with. I canned the excess produce and I am so glad I did. Now that I am in a better spot I donate money to the food bank. They can negotiate prices with grocery stores to purchase what they need.

I started going through my pantry every so often and if I have items that I know I can't use up before they go past the due date I put them in a bag for the food bank. I also keep an eye out on sales for pasta and canned goods to add to the bag and they every couple of month drop off the items to the food bank. Sometimes I have as many as 4-5 bags to deliver. Doing it in little bits isn't as costly and adds up. Like you say, if everybody does a little bit it makes a difference.

My husband brought home some pork fat trimmings a couple of weeks ago, I have never seen them in the store before. I think that it was $1.29 a pound. Rendered, it yielded about half its weight in beautiful lard, and the other half was cracklings, which sometimes my husband would crush and use as a bread spread on his rye bread. There is a crackling cookie recipe, no shortening, and it has a bit of a nutty crunch (I am allergic to nuts, so that is great.)

15 years ago, our town, had a food bank run by a church. It was mostly the work of us old geezers. We were still working but did this evenings and weekends. The middle aged people just told us what we should be doing. One day a bunch of young(20s) recipients were there while we were unloading a truck. I asked the young men to help but they refused. It was more important for them to smoke and joke. We old timers finished that day and quit. The middle aged then criticized us but wouldn't do anything themselves. The town no longer has a food bank. They have to go to a nearby city. In the US, all of our foods have gone up since January. Boneless, skinless chicken breasts would go on sale for $2 a pound up until February. Now the best is $3 per pound. Our VP just said in a speach that we have to reduce the population. All of the chickens in our neighborhood have disappeared. We're not sure if it was coyotes or fischer cats. Good Luck, Rick

Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats every day. Welfare keeps people weak. Stop giving them a hand out and give them a hand up!

i find olive oil much cheaper if bought in bulk - as low as $30 per 3 litres. still way more expensive than it used to be, but now 1l bottle of olive oil is going for $16 which is insane!

Corn oil is a seed oil, thus an inflammatory oil. Its not heart healthy. Animal fats are safer than corn oil.

I buy bone in thighs and then remove the bones at home and use them to make broth. We live in an area that produces a lot of fresh food so the food banks get lot of fresh produce and salad kits.

I know you are in Ontario, olive oil in Costco is better but not like it used to me. I fry mainly with lard, bacon fat, beef fat that I rendered myself from my beef order. I tell the butcher I want organ fats and fat trimmings, I render each separately because I make soap with it as well. Salad time I will use olive oil for sure, I have 10 bottles in freezer. I simply remove about 1/4 cup and freeze it the shelf life is unlimited then!! The government wants you hungry and dependent on them that is why they inquiring and asking people do they have a garden? That is what the army did with their so called wellness checks in Ontario recently, I will not open my door to them. This isn’t normal when the army knocks on your door this is one step closer to their end goal, you will own nothing and be happy and yes you will eat crickets, not this family never!! 🥰
