Research has shown that the ketogenic diet can reduce or even eliminate seizures in some individuals impacted by epilepsy - particularly those who have not gained seizure control after trying two or more treatment options. But why does keto work for these individuals and how do doctors decide which patients to recommend for this treatment?
On this episode of Seizing Life, gain a deeper understanding about using the ketogenic diet for seizures from registered dietician Robyn Blackford and advanced practice nurse Breanne Fisher from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.
Dive deeper into research on the ketogenic diet and epilepsy by attending a free webinar on Thursday, June 13. Register Today:

Why does Keto work? 24:00 Because the glucose storage in the brain gets replaced by keytones, and keytones regulate the brain excitory neurons. In most cases seizures are caused from a surge of glucose in the brain and not enough GABA.

The keto diet doesn't have to be that strict, by intermittent fasting you put your body into ketocuis . There are good fats nuts, olive oils, milks, youguts.

@@elrubio3955 Not much is known about the science of it, but yeah it just works somehow. I've been on strict keto ever since my epilepsy started 3 years ago when I was 18, and I noticed every time go off keto, even for a day, a seizure comes. Atkins wont work for me. I gain weight on it and my seizures come back. I do still get seizures on top of my keto and my meds but that's rare. That only happened like once in this whole last year.

@@vanillasparkle6899 Don't ever give up. A little known is that the ketone buildup for a prolonged period strengthens brain channels and kinda gets immune to the triggers so the exhibitory and inhibitory nerves do not turn into a seizure It may take 5 years to you but someday, The body will have more Ketone buildup and it will strengthen the brain nerves just like every other person. I'm Epileptic, I have recently started keto, I have seizures once a year due to missed medication ( since 4 years ) so now switching to keto for a period of 3 years at least. Keep going !

This video is a diet for controlling epilepsy. Not weight loss! Also if you are eating near zero carbs your body is forced to burn fat as oppose to carbs. Fat burns much quicker than carbs.

But the keto diet is very healthy , possibly The most healthy of diets- just make sure you keep up electrolytes ( salt magnesium potassium) and you’ll be fine - I fortunately don’t have epilepsy but know someone who has it but I do this diet plus periods of fasting ( 2-3 days) and feel amazing -no it’s a myth that it effects your overall health adversely perpetuated by food and drug industry just keep up electrolytes

You do not NEED carbs in your diet. Is you have near zero in your diet your body is forced to turn fat to produce energy. So fat is gone. I find protein much better than carbs for producing energy. Bowl of stewed beef and I am ready to get up and work. After a bowl of mashed potatoes I am sluggish and ready to take a nap.
