The tiny Netherlands is the second largest agricultural exporter in the world after the United States. Photographer and documentary filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen shows what that looks like and gives a disconcerting look into the kitchen of our food industry.
Of all the vegetables in the world, 70 percent have a Dutch origin via seed breeding. The Netherlands is Europe's largest tomato exporter. And their onions go en masse to Africa. In turn, The Dutch import green beans from Kenya and asparagus from Peru. By contrast, Amsterdam Sloten is home to Europe's largest indoor farm, which could supply half of Amsterdam with fresh vegetables in the future.
Global food production is responsible for at least 25 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, the food supply is coming under increasing pressure. Kadir van Lohuizen goes in search of answers to questions such as: where does our food come from? How is it produced? And where do we take it?
Van Lohuizen shows that pigs and chickens are fed in part on rejected stroopwafels, wine gums, whipped cream cakes, doughnuts and other food waste, and that in the largest pig slaughterhouse in the Netherlands, as many as 20,000 pigs are slaughtered per day. The heads, legs and intestines go to China and the "spare ribs" to the U.S.
Van Lohuizen's visual examination of the world behind our food production and consumption makes one think. What might the future of this food system bring us?

Really interesing and insightful look. It doesn't try to be overly positive, just realistic. It's also not too in depth but it's not meant to, as we'd spend hours on just one topic. Really appreciate some personal commentary, as for example it is well known that Dutch people don't really work on those farms. Looking forward to more content like this

Imagine working in an abattoir… Seriously though, the meat industry is abysmal. 47,000 pigs a day ? Why is a pig’s life worth less than your cat’s ?

The Dutch are very smart. They see the big money is in processing food, not just growing food. American farmers would do themselves a service if they invested in some processing equipment as well. It could help them increase their profits to offset all the losses they accrue in bad years.

The US does have large Agricultural businesses - just like the Dutch above - the avg Dutch famer is poor and selling up their holdings to the big boys, just like most farmers around the world.

That mentality is part of the problem, food is meant to be about health and nutrition first, not profit. Countries who ban fake meat are moving in the right direction

All this does is destroy the domestic farmers in the countries that the onions are exported to. And create extra profits for European capitalists.

Yeh, it's insane that West Africa can't produce cheap onions! But it will come one day. Look at it another way - this food is cheap - very cheap, even in Africa it will be cheaper than the local (lower quality) product. People who have nothing are happy to have cheap food - in places where food is expensive, people either starve or the gov. has to produce costly subsidies or risk revolt and war.

@@hiskyg8127 What a bunch of crap. West Africa can produce cheap onions but Dutch onions are so heavily subsidized by the EUs common agricultural policy (CAP) to an extent that these prices destroy any export market. Europe is at the same time exploiting the cheap labor of the global south while destroying the local markets for the sake of their own products. Neo-Colonialism, baby. It needs to be burned down.

Well this film was pretty great in spite of the filmmaker, who seemed to want to portray the whole thing as dark and unethical. I mean, I understand that blind and uncritical patriotism is a bad thing but this topic really should be a celebration of the amazing things the Netherlands is doing. They're feeding millions of people around the world and doing so much more sustainably than anyone else. The filmmaker seems to want to highlight only the negatives and imply that there's something nefarious about it all. Still a good film despite the overall tone. The Netherlands looks like it's ahead of the game in a lot of industrial and environmental areas. I hope more individuals, companies and countries look towards your example. ❤️🤍💙

Great point. I've seen some intensive pig and chicken farming in the UK and it's plain awful, and I'm told it can be even worse, environmentally and for the animals, in other countries where the life of an animal is totally disrespected. What the Dutch seem to have done is find a clever and healthy balance, given the world and its growing population's need to eat.

You don't always have to praise something just because it works well. It can always be better. It's good to be sceptical, even about amazing success. Without doubt we wouldn't have improvement. So overall I appreciate that the filmmaker didn't have the typical American like tone of "Everything is amazing and we're the best" ...

The guy producing the film is acting like this is a BAD thing. This stuff is impressive and incredibly beneficial to mankind. My respect for the Netherlands just doubled. And I already had quite a lot of respect for the Dutch. Feel free to emigrate to the United States, my Dutch friends. ☺️ ❤️🤍💙
