Luv your content. I have two small wooded areas surrounded by ag. Both wood lots are about 5 acres. I like to thicken up these woods. I really don’t want to do a lot of hinge cutting. If I use antler grow will this help. Suggestions please. Have a blessed day.

Spray end of May spread buckwheat crimson clover and oats. Spray again late July and seed fall seeds into it then roll buckwheat and pack.

Hey Dave, if my buckwheat comes in very half hearted on some areas, would you then recommend I kill it before august and seed on bare soil, or seed into weeds and buckwheat anyway, smash it, and hope it grows through? I see your point with a tiller but a lot of us don’t have one and a ground hog max won’t cut it for larger plots

I would love to start with buckwheat in my field , hasn’t been worked in30 plus year, I keep it mowed every year, but needless to say there’s a ton of weeds. My question is any good way besides burn out to get me started. I plan on getting bees this spring and I don’t want to use anything to harm them. Thanks

I would personally the just disc it up it late spring a couple times 2-3 weeks apart. Then plant your buckwheat after any danger of frost. Keep that buck wheat in the ground until fall and plant winter wheat. Or second option is to let the first planting of buck wheat go for 45 days disc or up up and replant buckwheat again. Let that go until fall and plant winter wheat. Also soil sample. Make sure PH is good. Weeds thrive in acidic soil. So if your PH is low you’ll always have weeds.

You ever put clover in your wheat, rye, oats? I usually add Reed, crimson and white clover at like 5 to 8 lbs a acres. Sometimes ill let that go to mid July.

Yes I put clover into wheat and rye in the fall planting to establish a clover plot for the following spring

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors seems like once it greens up in mid may deer like to fawn in it by early June when the rye is 5 foot tall and wheat 2 foot tall.

Hi dave, my question about the fertilizer got misunderstood yesterday, if you buy your fertlizer buy the bulk not by the bag, this way you can buy each seperate, if you bought 25 lbs of phosphorus, is that all 100% phosphorus
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
You can buy fertilizer by the bulk yes but it’s still the same. You have to understand the numbers. If you need 25 pounds of phosphorus then buy a 50 pound bag of 11-52-0 and you’ll get about 23 pounds. You can buy in bulk sure but it’s still the same. Still have fillers still has salts etc. most times buying in bulk you would need to order a ton or more for them to deliver

Hey, I have a 1/10 acre small “field” with some trees shadowing it and it’s right on the edge of the property by the the creek and about 450 yards off a small 4 acre chunk of woods. I already am gonna plant a bigger plot in the woods. What should I do with this? Also how do you feel about apples trees on property’s and can you please do a video on farmland with tiny chunks of woods? Thanks, bassslayer13
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
With that small of a spot I would only plant winter wheat. Heavy. Woods plot same deal especially if its lacking sunlight. Winter wheat is a good option. Apple trees and other fruit trees are a good attraction but it’s a limited resource. Once fruit is gone it’s gone until the next year. I would focus more on a longer lasting food source. You can still plant the trees but focus on other things as well

just found your channel after researchign, disking and planting my first food plot here in west texas. Bad news is that I didnt have a cultipacker, so germination may suffer. I have lots of questions...LOL. Im just getting started and planted a 1/4 acre of a seed blend called Mega Plot. After reading the bag, it looks like its a mix of rye oats, some turnips and clover. Problem is that we only see about 20 inches of rain a year...and have summer temps in the 100's and dry. I plan to see what comes up this spring as an experiment, and then plant again in Aug/Sep after disking again. I didnt do a soil test, but our soils here run high in PH...like over 7 typically. Any advice for my upcoming season with the food plots. thnx
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
That mix you are referring to is a fall mix. Planting in summer heat like that will most likely just die off. You are better off planting buck wheat. Buck wheat loves heat and can withstand periods of no rain more then anything. I would definitely do a soil sample For fertility levels. Cultipacker isn’t needed to have a food plot. Most times simple drag will do.

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors thanks for the tips...I will go see if I cant get some buckwheat seed at our local feed store this week than. Because I just planted and it hasn't rained yet, i can surely just overseed and plant your recommendation. I also put out 80 pounds of triple 19 fert at time of planting. So in Fall...just disk in the buckwheat and replant the fall plot...correct?
