In this video I briefly talk about how bad the food is in the United States compared to Scotland. It is quite shocking that the USDA allows chemicals that are directly known to cause cancer to be in many common food products, and then some! Do you fancy a bit of yoga mat chemicals with your bread?

I did that the opposite way. I am a Highland Scot who has been living in the US for more than 10 years. I went back to Scotland with my wife for 3 weeks in July. I loved getting some real Scottish food and my wife was astounded by the increase in my appetite. She started making comparisons between US and UK foods and was impressed by the range and quality of food in Scotland and also the prices. We came back to the US bringing some bits n pieces with us . Honestly the food in the US is mostly poor quality. I mean you can get a decent steak here but God knows what it was fed on. Funny thing is burgers in the USA should be great and are actually nowhere near as good as even a frozen burger in the UK. I don't eat most of the fast food here cause it tastes awful.

I spent most of my working life in the oil industry, catering mainly to Americans. I was continually amazed by their lack of interest in trying 'different ' foods from around the world. On one occasion, I asked a welding engineer why he liked his steak, so overcooked and all vegetables mushy and soft. His reply, "That is how my wife cooks. It reminds me of home!"

Hey. Weegie here. A lot of the things you say about Scottish/uk food is true but there is a reason, ironically precisely the thing you mentioned about food in the US. The UK has very strict consumer protection laws, as a result most pre made foods come unseasoned, even a simple can of soup will be greatly improved by adding salt and black pepper. In restaurants you have to ask for it ‘extra spicy’ or ‘proper spicy’ All the spices with the exception of patented mixes, available in the us are available here but may have different names. Secondly, Scottish cuisine, true historical cuisine does not function well with these rules, and due to various socio economic reasons related to emigration and ww2 which I won’t bore you with Scottish people largely missed or forgot about true Scottish cuisine. Get yourself to a proper butcher (remember we have continuity from old world medieval society) and order yourself some pheasant, grouse, duck, hare, venison, and in spring fresh lamb. And find a vendor for proper smoked salmon. Scotlands fresh fowl is second to none. Scotlands sea food is great but the government perpetrated a campaign in the 60s and 70s to dissuade buyers with scare stories (mercury, pollution) so they could sell it at higher prices to Europe. So actual seafood is overpriced and below quality in super markets again, a coastal fishmonger would be better. Thirdly, I make biscuits and gravy all the time. It’s practically a Scottish dish. It’s a savoury scone (no raisins or sugar on the 16th century frontier) with a cottage (flour based) gravy with sausage meat and bacon dripping. We tend to have the ‘gravy’ (cottage sauce) with mash potatoes. If a 16th century illiterate peasant can make it in the middle of nowhere I think you can manage. Your a grown man, TVs not that great and cookings not that hard.😂 Love your channel. Glasgow. ❤

this is very insightful! thank you! I thought I'd seen biscuits with gravy in another blog on Scotland. My eyebrows raised up when he said it doesn't exits in Scotland. And if it didn't well...make your own:) I have lived in Chicago USA for going on 2 yrs now and NY all my life before that. US..is RIDICULOUSLY over prices in everything. especially the food not to mention furniture clothing and housing. I've been researching for the past 3 years now and will continue to monitor the way of living in the UK specifically Scotland until that door has opened up for me to start the relocation process. I have to say that, and this is for me since it's a lifestyle I would like to live, that Scotland hands down checks off all the boxes for me. If I am with the same company in 2 years' time. I will put in for a transfer then. (They are a UK-owned company with offices based there and almost everywhere in the world) What I love about Scotland, and this can be other places as well, is that the cost of living is according to the salaries, not sure if I am explaining myself correctly on this part, but in other words and for example, housing is affordable not to mentions a lot bigger than in NY or where I am now. The average one-bedroom apartment price per month in NYC is $3,950 in Manhattan to $1,500 in Staten Islands NY you can find maybe as low as 2000pm in the city and maybe 1000 for a basement small apt in other boroughs surrounding the actual city. Chicago is much cheaper but not as low as the UK (some parts) There in Scotland you can let an entire home for 650 in certain areas. and even if you are willing to pay 1300 a month abroad you will get so much more for that. How does the US expect anyone to actually live and have a life besides working multiple jobs or shacking up with large families in one one-bedroom ?? Sorry dint mean to rant. But its insane. I do not know why so many folks want to go to America's land of opportunity. even though the past few years many has left and some have gone back to their countries for a better way of living. Idk ..god willing where I will be in 2 years..but I am preparing myself to be able to make that jump and move across the pond to your BEAUTIFUL country Scotland! lol God Bless and take care. 🧡 ( If I do get to move there Glasgow is number 2 on my list..#1for me would be Aberdeen 😊)

I'm also a US transplant to the UK and pretty much have the same experence. I'm chuckling at the Scots here trying to defend the spicy comments...To me it seems to be more generational, when I have the in-laws around and I am cooking or BBQing for them, I have to tone it down ALOT, but younger people tend to like the stuff I make normally. My partner who is from Glasgow has said that the variety of food and flavor took a real jump in the 90s-2000s, so people who grew up with a more...ahem...sedate diet might not like spicy. Stuff you buy in the shops pre-made is 100% toned down and always needs a boost. They also seem to not understand the concept of "Buffalo" flavor (sorry, Flavour) at all, which is always weird to me as Frank's Hot Sauce is sold in pretty much every decent sized store. The quality of meats cannot be understated either...Even Aldi and Iceland sell meats that would be better than the more expensive stuff you get at Whole Foods.

Are you German or American? Mouldy bread in 2 days? Don't take a loaf from the front of the shelf. Dive into the rear of the shelf and you'll find a loaf that's probably got a week to go - and will last that time. I eat M&S Farmhouse Granary and it generally will have a 'best before' date 4-6 days away. Each loaf lasts me a full week in normal storage in the kitchen, not in the refrigerator. You just need to make sure that it's not in a warm, humid environment. I'm sure that Americans always use lots of spices to mask the taste of the rubbish they serve up in their restaurants. It’s extraordinary how the food situation of U.S. vs U.K. has changed in the last 25 years. When I first started visiting the U.S.A. I thought that although there were plenty of chain fast food places there was also a lot of independent places where more often than not the food was better than what we generally got in the U.K. The same applied to the supermarkets. Now it’s gone in reverse, though the U.S. has some outstanding restaurants overall the food there has too many preservatives etc and the large fast food chains have almost taken over the restaurant scene outside of the big metropolitan areas which have also suffered however. ]

North Ayrshire! I'm long the road from you in Paisley. Thanks for referring to where you live as _Scotland_ and not the nonsense generic term "UK". Not sure regarding your comments about spices and the range available - it's true that Aldi as you mentioned (and Lidl) don't have 'the full bhuna', as it were, but other supermarkets generally have pretty much almost everything eg my local Tesco (which isn't even one of the big ones) has every spice I have ever needed including things like asafoetida (hing) and caraway seeds. Bear in mind we also have significant numbers of Indian and Pakistani born or descended (some are 4th and 5th generation now) populations and we have shops (stores) specialising in their foods, we have African and Chinese shops doing the same. There's no legal food ingredient that you cannot find in Scotland. Also, the "tikka masala", a popular moderately hot spicy "Indian" dish was invented in Glasgow, the owner of that restaurant recently passed, RIP an Indian Scottish hero. Haven't you noticed how popular Indian food is in Scotland? 🤔

Yes, Tesco and Asda do have a bigger selection of spices and will have most of your “standard” spices but it’s nothing like what they have in the US. Even Costco here has very little variety in the flavours of spices . When I talk about variety of spices I don’t mean your basics like salt pepper and paprika, I mean specialty spices. If you yearn for tex-mex (I do, after ten years in the states, back home in Edinburgh now) there are a few places, but your best bet is to make your own. Spicy can be had, but many curry houses say 'hot' when I'd say 'mild'. Again, there are proper places (there's a Thai restaurant round the corner that does a gaeng pa that can make your socks rotate) but if you do it yourself and pack the freezer you are safe and secure for your hottitude.

So many people reacting badly to the spicy comment. I don't think he's saying that there is no spicy food or there aren't any Scots who can handle spice. For me, it's the difference in what's considered spicy. I've had the same experience of ordering something that is marketed as spicy and I can barely taste any heat/spice.

Hah I completely agree on the food safety standards - those lobbyists make sure the manufacturers are taken care of in the US! I try to buy the best quality chicken and free range eggs I can - feel sorry for the cheap chicken conditions 😢 I find the reverse when I go back to Scotland now. I can’t take the grease - this of course means I have been craving fish and chips or a white pudding supper 😜🤣 Back in the US I tend to cook all my own meals now from scratch. Restaurants are overpriced and I find my food more tasty. US has always seemed focused on as large a portion size as possible, of crap bland food 🤷‍♀️ I am used to Mexican now so I wonder how I would miss that back in Scotland? Can’t you just make your own taco seasoning and make quesadillas/burritos? Well I’m back for a week at the end of the month so we will see how it goes 🤣 Keep up the commentary 👍

Stuck in the USA after my wife died and I developed emphysema, now stage 4 and on Oxygen 24/7. I am old so won't mess about. After 25 years in the US I can categorically say that US food is ABNYSMAL when compared with any UK food. 90% sugar in every damned thing and nothing is fresh unless you are very well heeled and can get to restaurants that buy in only non-typical US ANYTHING to serve up. I now have IBS and belly fat, and I was always a really fit man until I came here. I do check nutritional labels but the FDA allows almost anything to go into US food which like everything else in America is about one thing only - PROFIT.

Here in the UK every local authority employs an 'Environmental Health Officer'. Every restaurant, takeaway or food shop manager is concerned about if and when they might visit his premises because they have the authority to close them down or take them to court and they cannot be denied entry. They will rumage through the store for food that is out of date or unfit. They will use probes to check that food is stored at the appropriate temperature. They will search closely for signs of pest infestation. They will ask the staff [ and not just the manager] questions about what they are doing about any issues. A few years ago one of London's top restaurants was made to close because they were not happy with hygiene standards in the kitchen. A large supermarket not far from me once ended up being fined £600.000 by Brent magistrates because of mouse droppings in their instore bakery bread. If they are pleased with a shop they will give them a certificate to say so which many places proudly display near the entrance. Does the United States not employ similar officials?
@peterkonradort
@peterkonradort 7 ай бұрын
Yes every (or I hope every) local area in the US has a “health department” that does those types of checks. I know they check to make sure the area is clean and food is stored at the proper temperature, etc but I would have to do more research to see what the exact differences are. But, keeping the work area clean and the food at the proper temperature doesn’t fix the food being poor quality to begin with 😂

I suddenly realised that the gravy was really a Rue base used to make sauces but using sausage or bacon fat instead of butter and with the sauce unfinished. The biscuits are a uk scone recipe just unfinished rough baked . Nothing actually special. It was probably what the cattle men had to make on the trail because it was easy to do.

But you can get plenty of fast food in the UK and Europe. You do sound a bit like a new comer still. We do know what's legal and illegal in Europe. PS: I'm a long time German expat who has lived in the US (West coast) for 20 years and am back in Europe but certainly not Germany. Have lived off and on in the UK for a long time though. Spicy food, flavour and quality is much better than crazy levels of heat to mask low quality ingredients. Supermarkets can be hit and miss for spices but there are smaller independent shops and delis that will usually what have you want. Years ago I was passing through hawaii with an hour to kill between flights, bought a bar of stuff claiming to be chocolate and it was vile. Thankfully I had enough cash on me to get a coffee which wasn't much better but enough to mask the aftertaste of the brown bar.

I am in Florida lived in the US until 45 years old, and have been living in the UK for 7 years, I have a right to remain, citizenship / UK passport after 6 years of marriage visa. The food here is ok, but Taco Bell without hot sauce? they do not eat refried beans.... it is just certain fertilizers and animal meds they allowed in livestock farming, yes they use fewer preservatives but did you know part of Brexit was dropping EU food regulations and the US and the UK have been working on a food trade deal? Go eat out at chip shops, the potions are huge, and the meats are cheap and full of mixed meats from all over the EU with some being better than others, I have been running a Deliveroo take-out for 6 years (American BBQ) and the meats are much better and healthier, but being able to buy in bulk I see most the cheap chip shops and grills are using chicken and fish from China, Thailand, middle east and India if you think they have better standards you need to educate your self. If you eat any cheap food in the UK you might as well be eating in the USA, if you're like me and only eat free-range meats farmed in the UK when eating out you are limited and pay 4 times as much, you better off cooking all meals at home.

Much information about the differences between US and EU in this video. Impossible to elaborate to all of them. One important point you mentioned is, that chlorined chicken is not forbidden in the EU because of possible health effects by chlorine. It's because of the profit oriented standards in US. Produce at the lowest, unsanitary levels as possible and wash it off with chlorine in the end. What do you think about Brexit? You live in Scottland. A majority but not a huge want to get independend from the kingdom. On the other hand, the UK wants a trade agreement with the US. That would bring over all the US food standards to UK and make it incompatible with EU.
