I actually like Snickers as a snack, exactly because they have so much sugar to immediately get into your bloodstream and give you the energy to think and move to actually get a real meal. Also considering that they are already kinda soft, I at least think they aren't disgusting when they melt a bit, which is practical going hiking or something

Snickers are great for fast energy when you are on a long treck out it the wilderness too. A ski up a mountain absolutely needs snickers.

@@mandypants9936 Coffeein helps if you are mentally exhausted/ lack sleep etc, not if you are hungry. As much sh*t as sugar gets nowadays, glucose is a vital part of the brain metabolism. Drinking coffee will only give you the illusion of having energy, which I would guess could even be dangerous somewhere off the grid, like drinking whiskey against the cold.

@@mandypants9936 not for acid reflux. And if you have some nausea and need something really quickly it's gonna take a sec to make coffee or tea. I usually go with some form of a granola bar and have them within arms reach basically, since sometimes I'll forget to eat and then feel horrible and need something as soon as possible.

It's nice to see the actual science because I use peanut based candy bars often when my sugar drops until I can cook or get a proper meal because it brings it up but it doesn't immediately crash and I don't feel hungry the entire time I cook.

Snickers has always been my little sister's favorite candy bar. Mine has always been Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Fun fact- Did you know that the Snickers bar was named after a horse, Snickers, that the company's founders owned? Makes sense for a horse name since 'snicker' is basically 'nicker' (aka a sound horses make) with an S in front of it.

Snickers still has one of the best calorie to price ratios though. When I was a broke teenager and had just enough pocket change to buy one candy bar to last me through the school day, I looked at every candy bar and Snickers won out. Now as an adult who day hikes, I would put nature valley peanut butter dark chocolate protein bars in top spot. Most gas stations have them and they taste better than cliff bars.

I love the Nature Valley ones. They got 300 calorie 15 gram bars, and 190 10 gram bars, and I eat them all the time. Perfect for a post workout snack

Fun fact: normally some candies and other types of food need a new slogan when they set foot on Brazil, but Snickers kept the classic slogan in portuguese. "Você não é você quando está com fome" is practically the US slogan word by word. MatPat, excellent work on this videos! You got a fan in Brazil. I very much remember one day when I complained to my grandma that I was hungry. Either I must have been really annoying or she had a bad day, but she replied with a very angry: "You don't even know what hunger is, you just have an appetite." (Image about 200% more angry, because it was in German) This shut me right up, probably not because of the meaning, but because of the fact my lovely gran gran just snapped at me. Never the less, later I realized that *she* knows what hunger is. She went through a world war, destroyed homes, poverty... all of it. Writing this dumb comment on a silly video now makes me realize even more so, how much I miss her. And that despite all of the horrible times she went through, she managed to create such a warm home for my mom, me and all my family that this one minor snap is the most angry I remember her ever being. As a former office troll spending long hours in a cage ... I mean "cubicle" ... I learned a lot from trying different empty calorie hunger-delayers in the break room's vending machine. I more or less concur with your findings, except for one factor you missed: digestibility. "Peanut butter" (and I use that term loosely here) digests so rapidly, it doesn't provide the same hunger-delaying effect as whole peanuts. It's nowhere near as good. So with that, I'd knock the "peanut butter" cups down a few pegs, and between that and the starch content of the Take 5 being easier to digest than straight-up sugar, I'd actually move that down too. Making it: 1. Pay Day, 2. Mr. Goodbar, 3. Peanut M&Ms, 4. Snickers, 5. Take 5, 6. Reece's. In my experience.

And honestly, a candy bar that should IMHO exist (but doesn't?) would be a thin core of salty peanut butter / caramel mix, surrounded by whole peanuts, coated lightly with chocolate, and then sprinkled with salt. It'd have all the flavors you want to stimulate a proper neuralchemical high, a lot more protein and fiber than most, that quick hit of sugar, and salt ... lots of salt. LOL An important aspect for sweaty workouts / lunchtime sports activities to "get you back in the game" ... or back in the rat maze ... I mean cubicle-laden office.

"Sugars makes you more hungry in the long term" YES, since I was a kid I was flabbergasted at the custom of eating sugary desserts last, and only last after the proper meal. To this day as an adult I use small candies or similar to increase my appetite before eating filling meals (I actually do need help with my appetite, I'm skin). A dessert to open my appetite and hunger, and an actual meal to close it down, leaving me satisfied for a long time. If I eat dessert after a meal I'll be uncomfortably hungry again.

Especially if you have fiber with the big meal afterwards. I do the same thing when I have to go to a family meal (like a big thanksgiving), and I wanna make sure I eat enough (social anxiety makes me lose my appetite, and I don’t wanna be rude); I eat a small piece of candy, or just a spoonful of something, then I eat more of the dinner, which makes the host feels happy that I’m eating.

Well, personally I prefer to eat dessert, chocolate, or something other sweet after I've eaten dinner/proper food. Because they taste better to me then. And eating sweet stuff when hungry just make me feel a bit unwell.

In Australia the top 3 is changed (as we don't have some of the candy bars) so 1st is Peanut MnM's, 2nd is Reece's cups and 3rd is Snickers. As 1st and 2nd have odd shapes and aren't easy to snack on the go, Snickers is the best option for snacking especially while on the go

@@jacks.4005 Not really pseudo science but a lot of people do wrongly cite that book as if IT IS science (science is not Gladwell's thing). In Outliers, he basically looks at some phenomenon and posits what he thinks to be a possible explanation. One example is that a disproportionately high percentage of pro hockey players are born early in the year. His explanation is the age and growth difference between a kid born in Jan. and a kid born in Dec. of the same year. And that kids' hockey is often grouped by year of birth. More physically mature kids might excel over their less mature peers, get noticed, get more specialised coaching, etc. Exceptional people do work hard, have talent, and put in the hours (the origin of the 10 000 hour "rule"). But something completely unrelated (like their birthday) might give them an edge. And unlike science, it's not like he collected massive amounts of data and/or does controlled testing and/or does statistical analysis. In many ways it is similar to the Freakonomics books by Dubner and Levitt. The whole point is there might be some not so obvious explanations to the "exceptional" and "inexplicable". And anyone that uses Outliers as "science" hasn't read an actual book on science. You will never find it in the hard science section but in the pop psych section.

Food Theory idea! Koolaid man vs. Lucky the Leprechaun. You’ve already discussed Koolaid man’s many powers he has developed over the years in one of the early Food Theory episodes, but another incredibly powerful food mascot represents Lucky Charms. Lucky actually uses the charms which give him an array of powers (similar to the infinity stones in a way). The heart charm can bring stuff to life, the blue moon makes Lucky invisible, the shooting star allows him to fly, the rainbow grants him teleportation powers, the horseshoe charm can speed things up (Lucky included), the clover charm brings good luck, the red balloon makes Lucky able to float (not sure why he needs to float AND fly but whatever), the hourglass charm, which gave Lucky powers to “control time”, was replaced by the unicorn charm which “adds colors to the world”. No idea what that means but it was a total nerf. But I’d love to see the two face off in a battle to the death, and watch who comes out victorious! Hope ya see this MatPat!

@@gracie5463 Twix and Milky Way have very similar caramels to each other and most other candy bars. Three Musketeers doesn't have caramel at all, it's nougat. There is something unique about Payday caramel. I don't know what causes it though.

i almost feel the take 5 has a slightly higher ranking point, in that the pretzels change the "hungry" aspect. Would the addition of grain into the bar bring it up? I understand that peanut protein is the winner for total satiation per mg. But as a consumer im attracted to the more varied food group of the take 5 bar.

Actually, there is an interesting fact here: Mars is a different candy bar here in Europe, at least, in Russia, but iirc in Europe in general - it's the same candy bar as the American version of Milky Way. And Milky Way is the Russian/European version of 3 Musketeers. Got confused when I was watching an American video with Milky Way in a brown packaging instead of the usual blue and it being twice the size and then having 2 layers instead of one. That makes me think if the list of satiety, which has a German title, actually lists Snickers or Mars as that 70% filling candy bar

Snikers, in my opinion, is one of the better candy bars to eat when lightly hungry. Mainly cause the nuts, but also the caramel and chocolate. Its not just sugar, but has some substance to it. But of course, to cure hunger, full meals and grenola bars are the only way to go.

It's funny because Paydays have always been my favorite candy bar lol! My grandma used to love eating them because they were one of the few candies she could eat as a diabetic due to the sugar, and we both loved peanuts! She's gonna love this video! Literally yesterday I had to stop by at a store to grab a snack on the go and they didn’t have any granola/protein bars, which are usually my go-to’s when I want a convenient, nutrient dense brick of something sweet. But they did have candy, so I figured Payday would be the best choice because of all the nuts. It’s cool to see my in-the-moment reasoning backed up by actual calculations, haha!

@@kaldo8907 I have actually taken a potato to work and microwaved it for a few minutes when I was hungry.... Before prediabetes that is. A plain potato no salt or anything is actually really good. It's nice to have mild pleasant flavors sometimes instead of having everything way seasoned.

Not only for all the reasons mentioned in the video, but also it's pretty high in both salty and sweetness. So it really hits that munchie spot, regardless. None of the other options, regardless of their peanut content, have the salt kick that Payday does.

Depends on the region In the US a mars bar is an almond snickers bar but it’s actually a British chocolate bar from 1938 more similar to the US’s Milky Way bar Also the British Milky Way is more similar to the 3 musketeers bar
