This is just the way my mother prepared meals. We lived in the Appalachian Mountains when i was young. We grew a garden and my mom preserved our vegetables in canning jars, we also canned apples and other fruits plus wild berries. We didn't have much money but we lived well.

I love watching videos about the simpler way of life. I want my own life to mirror that. I like the idea of living naturally off the land, using either rainwater or a well, and cooking over fire. It's simpler and there are no bills to worry about. Being a single divorced woman, it would be less stressful.

When we lived in Laramie, Wyoming USA which is on the plains accessed by Interstate 80, the highest point along that cross-country highway (Lincoln Monument is just up the hill), we'd often spend time near Happy Jack skiing and looking for wild iris in the summer. On the other side of the plains is a National Forest which extends into northern Colorado with very lovely trout fishing --the water is so clear that a person can see the fish swimming from above on a fishing bridge. Higher still beyond Centennial, in the Snowy Range. The scenery is somewhat similar to this KZfaq video. When the road is passable after the snow melt clears in June, we used to hike around the lakes. Once when we were driving along, we had to stop to let a shepherd leading a flock cross the road. My son was delighted when we stopped on further along for him to run across a meadow toward these sheep. Climbing the hills around Lake Marie e.g. Schoolhouse Rock, we found giant Boletus edulis, of which we picked a few to slice to dry. Their flavor even when dried was exquisite, growing in the pure mountain air, so close to the sun at the higher elevation! Boletus edulis were also growing at lower elevations, in the National Forest, but under warmer and more humid conditions they tended to be full of bugs that burrowed into the spongey undercap. In that area were logging camps, and I recall working at a local nursing home, where there was a patient who was dying of cancer and her family visited as often as they could; they were loggers of an ethnic Norwegian heritage. These videos of pure mountain air, clear streams, and endless skies seem to respark the memory!

Very enjoyable to watch, it has been many years since I sat at a table with this kind of great food, this from a family friend, a Russian farm cook over 60 years ago, I pray the war does not reach this lady!
