Coach Madden thank you for doing justice for Coach Coryell. As a lifelong Cowboys fan I remember watching the games with my Dad on CBS. AFC would have their games on NBC with the likes of Don Criqui and his Midwest accent. I am sorry San Diego fans for you losing your team. They were truly great: Fouts, Muncie, James, Jefferson, Joiner. But I guess there was someone who created that machine and it had to be Coach Coryell. Please forgive me fans because we would always poke fun and say Don Coryell would say " I can't get rid of this headache" because of the intense look on his face. Coach Madden said it all with his "intense concentrative powers" and because of this the Chargers were great. I have great memories of this team as a child. RIP Coach. If you cared like Coach Madden said you cared you are already wearing a gold jacket

John Madden is a great guy and has a way to express his heart so genuinely and simply. I'm sure he learned a lot from Coryell. Most SD fans don't like him because he was a Raider, but this gives you some insight to the great guy he is. When Darrel Stingley got paralyzed in the 78 preseason game in Oakland, Madden was the only guy to visit Stingley the first few days, brought clothes for Stingley's wife and kids when they came and even saved his life when a machine accidentally turned off.

RIP Coach Coryell and recently Coach Madden. Those were some great Charger teams. So sorry San Diego you lost your team because those were some great memories of Don Coryell's stoic pensive look. If he wrote a book it would be a great read. I think maybe he was like a football scientist. Cowboys fan here, but dang; Fouts, James, Muncy, Joiner, Jefferson, Dean, "All world Tight End", ...that was a team......can't help but think that man had a big hand in the making of that team.....the Miami game is one to remember.....thanks for the memories Coach ✝️............Thank you Coach Madden for your humility in that moment...That's how men used to be. He was humble enough to introduce himself. He didn't do it for applause.... RIP Men...love y'all God bless 🙏 ✝️

Raiders fan here. I never really respected most of our opponents, especially the Steelers (lol) but I always respected Don Coyrll's teams. Madden really explains why. Not only did he do his own thing in terms of play calling but he ran his teams like a family and you could tell. Maybe if he was a big more selfish he could have disciplined his teams to a Super Bowl but that just wasn't his style. He played his game, his way and he can damn close to winning it all more than once. RIP

Best story I heard about Don Coryell. In 1979 or 1980 during the American hostages crisis in Iran someone asked him "what do you think about that Khomeini guy" Coryell thought a second and in all seriousness asked back "what team does he play for?". He couldn't imagine anyone thinking about anything but football. That is real commitment to your craft.

John Madden had a five-minute radio spot on San Francisco stations KSFO/KYA-FM in the 1980s into the '90s, where morning radio host Gene Nelson would converse with John about topical items in sports. Madden praised Coryell on that radio show when Don was coaching the Chargers; and gave us radio listeners some insights about the coach and the man: Madden said that despite the intensity we saw of Coryell on the sidelines, that he was the nicest of persons to know. And when the Chargers were having issues with their defense unit in the 1980s, where fans where wondering why there wasn't a shakeup with the defense coaching staff, I recall Madden saying that Coryell didn't like the aspect of firing people, and had a propensity for holding onto people in his organization longer than he should. I always enjoyed watching the Coryell NFL teams play on TV, even going back to the St. Louis Cardinals era. It was one of the few teams in the 1970s that gave the Dallas Cowboys fits in the NFC schedule of games.

He was in the hospital and called a nurse because something was wrong with the machine and they quickly fixed it. He would drive to the hospital after football practice, after home and away games to visit with Darrel in 78 before they moved him to Boston. No wonder why all the Raider players love Madden.

Don should have been inducted into the Hall of Fame while he was still alive. He was an innovator, a great coach, and a great man. Just look at those who coached under him and what they learned from him. Joe Gibbs and John Madden will both tell you that Coryell should have bee in the Hall of Fame long ago...

How many Superbowls were won with Coryell's offense under Madden in Oakland, Zampeze in Dallas, Gibbs in Wash and Walsh in SF? The HOF snubb is like Charles Lindberg denying the fact he would have never set any aviation milestones without the Wright Brothers inventions.

SD native and loyal to SD through thick and thin. Air Coryell hof snub=obscene crime. Those were good years. Despite not making it all the way, i think its safe to say we were king of the upset and one of the most feared teams. We stole a lot of glory from more nationally "recognized" teams, even after the time of the "super chargers". Fast forward today- Fk Spanos and what he has done. There's a special place down below for that dude. We are SD fans. I'll always love the team itself, but not before my city. When I die, I'd like 6 chargers as my pallbearers so they can let me down, one, last, time. Rip Don, rip John. Go Padres.

Its a travesty that he is not in the Hall. Totally agree, Tony couldn't win with Tampa, Gruden goes in and wins no problem, and when his SB win was against one of the weakest teams to ever get into a SB. He's a horrible commentator too. But Coryell is the entire modern offense of the NFL, I don't get what the Hall of Fame voters don't understand about the man. When he died, I cried cause he was never going to get the chance to be inducted while alive... its just so fuckin shameful.

Of course Don belongs in the Hall. Speaking of his quirks, I bought Conrad Dobler's book years ago. Whatever you thought if him as a player, he had a lot of funny stories. When Coryell was in St. Louis, Dobler said he would have the offense work on "secret plays" in practice during the week. He very rarely called one, but they would practice them. One time the Cards were down late in a game. Before the offense took the field, Dobler came over to Don and told him they ought to use the secret play they worked on. Coryell said "you're right Conny, we've set them up perfectly for it. Only problem, if we use it, it won't be secret anymore.!" Laughed my butt of over that story every time I think of it

I was a lifelong Chargers fan, but not now. After 40 years of heartbreak, I can't do it anymore. Gene Klein and the Spanos' wasted some of the greatest talent ever to play in the NFL. Fouts, Winslow, Muncie, Tomlinson, Chandler, Brooks, Dean, and now Herbert will be on that list, eventually. Gene Klein single handedly help build the 49ers dynasty by letting go Fred Dean, Gary Johnson, Amos Lawrence, Dan Audick, and Gary Plummer. The Chargers just plain killed me!!
