But how would that apply to other sports like basketball, volleyball, where you only use your hands and aren't allowed to use your feet. Would you call those sports handball to keep with the fundamentals of the sport? Would you call baseball, batball? Same logic applies for these sports too

I think the question can go two ways: 1. "Do you prefer soccer (football) or (american) football?" OR 2. "Which term do you prefer, soccer or football?". I think Serge was answering the first, but the way they phrased the question could go two ways and some players were answering to the first and others to the second.

As a Canadian I've always wondered this and still do. If you call soccer football (which I think it should be called football but there already is a sport called football) what would you call football 🏈 in other countries? If it's common in other countries which I know it isnt

There was initially two types of football. One played by feets and one played by hands. First name for football played by foot it is association football , short Socc -er. And we know what happened with rugby and ist derivatives American football and Australian football. So if you want to blame someone blame Brits for this mess.

That’s never been the claim lmao. All forms are simply versions of football. You had rugby football, association football, and later American football. The dominant sport eventually just got labeled “football” in each country. The term soccer also originated in England and was the preferred name for the sport for a long time while rugby was still popular.

If some sports are basically « football » why we have to call « football in which 11 players kicking a ball » football? Soccer’d be an unique term to mention it, there’d be no confusion

but 90/95% is with the actual foot but American football is played the reverse like 10% with the actual foot so it wouldnt make sense to call that football
