One element missing from Messi and Christiano’s game that R9 had is R9 had the ability to do things at a very very slow pace. He didn’t rely on quick movement and in fact he could change pace up and down. You could watch him do a move at a slow pace and it’d still baffle an opponent and drop them. It’s like a slight of hand magician. One magician can be quick which is why you don’t see it but another can do it super slow right in front of your eyes and it STILL fools you. That was class

As far was hardest era, you would also have to consider than contemporary football is more demanding on tactics, positional play and physical prowess than the early 2000s and prior. R9's abilities to bamboozle you and then destroy you is just something else. In terms of ball control, balance and inventiveness when being boxed in by multiple defenders, R9 is just wow.

@@jenni431 let's not pretend Messi hasn't scored goals like the one shown in the video..some of these old guys were gr8..I myself to a degree think R9 has had arguably the greatest prime in history speaking of ability.. but retired players have become myths for some reason.. perhaps same would happen for Messi in another 20 yrs or so.

For him, the goalkeeper was just another defender to beat. He’s the strongest player I’ve ever seen in my life. Only a young Pele (58-62) and a peak Maradona (85-87) are his equals . Before 98 WC final he was just unbelievable. Crazy to think that leaving Barcelona he had 3 options, Inter, Lazio and Rangers. At least i had the chance to dream that he could've played for us. At times he was unstoppable. Physically and technically he was brilliant. If he received the ball in the right position he was going to get a shot off and he was clinical.
