He’s the goat plain and simple, this is with or without this title that has eluded him. 1 more game though, and he’s cemented as the GOAT (even though he doesn’t need it) to even the casual fans. At 35 years old no one else has taken a campaign in his own hands like this. 5 goals and 3 assists in 5 games is unparalleled. He’s playing as if he’s 24 again and I hope he can achieve this huge glory for all football fans around the world and hopefully claim an 8th balon dor to put the icing on the cake for his career before he spends the rest of his days in Miami

Scaloni and his coaching staff prepared this game very, very well. Even though Croacia had more ball possession, they barely had a shot on target for the whole match. Croacia's forwards didn't touch the ball (again outstanding performances by Cuti Romero and Otamendi), and their midfielders never got a clear shot from outside the box. I thought Croacia would mount a comeback on the 2nd half, but the minutes kept going and they got nowhere. Messi talked during the post-game interviews about how they knew about Croacia's midfield tactics, and that they were prepared to exploit the spaces that they left behind. So, yes, outstanding individual actions (Messi and Julian magic) got it done, but for the magic to appear there needs to be a tactical plan, and a group of players that knows how to interpret the game, when to push, and when to stay back. This was Argentina's main strength today -- maybe not only positional strategy, but players inside the pitch that take the right tactical decisions. Example -- Otamendi asking the midfielders to stop going for a through pass on every possession. Also to consider, Croacia played two games into extra-time. After a while they looked too tired, and unfortunately for them the subs didn't bring anything exciting into play

@@oswaldjames6295 this is a useless stat, our attackers are beyond terrible. krama is an AM playing ST, pasalic is an AM playing RW, petko and livaja are slow and always overplay passes, perisic is also slow and always tries to shoot instead of crossing it in, budimir is a statue (got subbed on only to come off lol). our best attackers are orsic and vlasic, who barely got any game time, and even then they suck, which goes to show just how dire our attacking is. also the 2 players you mentioned, livaja and vlasic, both play/ed in poor leagues. livaja is top goal scorer in a league where theres really one 1 other team other than dinamo thats half decent, the rest are farmers. and vlasic was joint top goal scorer like 2 years ago, since he joined westham and then torino, hes been pretty much useless, only recently finding his form again for torino as an AM, and not a RW where dalic forces him to play. fair play to argentina, but dont act like they did anything to prevent our attackers scoring or creating chances, they just genuinely suck and wouldnt start or even play for most teams in this WC. you could see the difference in quality, every single team we played showed more attacking skill than we did, other than canada.

Well tbf Messi should get a yellow card for provoking the Netherlands bench after he scored, also he shit talked about referees which any other player would be punished for, but he is Messi, so everything is fine. Also, Paredes shoot the ball at the Netherlands bench, no yellow card for it also (that would be his 2nd yellow & red card). During 2nd goal penalty, 1 Argentinian player was in the penalty box before Messi shoots, so the penalty had to be retaken. So yea, referees did help Argentina a bit.

Scaloni had these incredible tactics based on every team Argentina played(except South Arabia, probably bcause of no information or took the match to easy) and managed to fit tighly with every team's play. He does deserver a lot of attention and respect for his decisions and consistency, cause in the last years, just Zidane was managing to do this and basically stop teams from playing the way the want (that why he won the Champions League with Madrid 3 times in a row)

I mean, 3 goals were annulled by the VAR in the Saudi Arabia Game, even before the Saudis had a chance to win it, I think it was mostly psychological, the team started to degrade after that, thinking that it was going to be as all the other WC when Argentina had all the refs against them, also thinking of losing the 36/37 win streak must have weighted a lot. But not to discredit the saudis' manager, he absolutely saw the oportunity and took it, after half-time, he adapted to Argentina's faults and started digging deeper.

One of the issues with Croatian narrow close mid 3 is that when out of possession they had trouble covering Argentinas wide mid. Enzo Fernandez was left too much space to find that pass to Alvarez that led to the penalty. Nobody was on him. On the other side, De Paul was free as well. All three Croatian mid were very much in the center of the pitch. Argentina had no trouble building up quickly.

Great insight. Croatia has the best midfielders in WC. But Argentina (Scaloni) knew this and allowed Croatia to get more ball possession ( see the game stats Croatia has 61% ) in the midfield but putting a much stronger defense deep near the goalkeeper. Croatia really did not changed its game mode and Argentina took advantage of this by not making a priority chasing Croatia’s midfielders. At the end Messi magic creating opportunities and Argentina strong defense was too much for Croatia.

As croatia would have stayed back and not taken the risk of trying to score goals and would have taken it out to penatlies. I have seen penalties given for much less but yes that fall from alvarez was a little too simulated coz his kick on the ball wasn't as strong.. So my 2 cents. Nice idea, but this is how I see it. The amount of time Messi plays will likely be tied with his official resignation from the National team. His teammates are begging him to stay on. But, that also depends on his club contract. My guess is that if Messi plays club level for two additional years, he will play with Argentina in the next Copa America...If he manages to play club level 3 more years. He could play the next World Cup. That would mark the absolute end of his international career then. And his club career would then likely end within a year of that. To play for Argentina, he has to be fit and playing regularly. I do think , Messi will retire completely before his 40th birthday.

The Argentine National Team did not participate in World Cups for 24 years and was deprived of having been able to win a title. It was one of the 16 participants in Italy 1934, but was eliminated in the first round after losing 3-2 against Sweden. Then he was absent in France 1938, Brazil 1950 and Switzerland 1954, only to reappear in Sweden 1958. Although they attended the 1934 World Cup, the National Team was represented by an amateur group -which was left out in the first match- because the Argentine League, in which the best national players were, was not affiliated with FIFA and was He refused to lend his players for the National Team. Then, the AFA presented a combination of mostly amateur athletes from clubs such as Dock Sud, Estudiantil Porteño, Sportivo Barracas, among others, who were directed by the Italian Filippo Pascucci.

Morocco - Argentina would definitely be a very interesting finals. I also think Morocco will beat France, with how they have been playing and how strong they look. For example against Portugal when they were one goal up, they still created great chances and nearly made it 2-0 on multiple occasions. At the end, despite playing defensively, they still had better chances than Portugal. Also love their goalkeeper by the way. It would really be a shame if they didn’t make it to the finals.

What is the criteria for your ratings? Dalic the same rating as against the Brazil? No offence, but Scaloni destroyed Dalic in this match. Croatia’s main problem is in the final 3rd in attack, don’t have genuine forward attackers, strikers like Mandzukic and Rebic, Lovren is getting on in age and slow, and Sosa wasn’t at his best. Scaloni did a good job tactically, and Messi and Alvarez did the damage. Argentina played the counter well, they really studied Croatia’s play.

In my opinion, the undesirable penalty played a decisive factor. From that point, on-wards Croatia started to push more bodies forward thus creating a void in the defence. If they stuck to the previous game plan and waited for Argentina to make defensive errors, Croatia might have turned the game.

As an Argentinian I got worried about Croatia's mid field passing abilities but the recovery capability of Argentina is very strong so even a goal would not have knocked them out as easily as Croatia. Hahahahah - How about coming into the world cup without a dedicated striker. If Croatia had a player of Mandzukic's class - it would have been Croatia progressing. They played the whole competition without a dedicated striker and they used the strength of their midfield to push to score. This result will hurt Croatia as its a team that will face a large number of players retiring and they just don't have the players to fill the vacancies. We will struggle to qualify for the next world cup. Modric and Brozovic i am sure will retire from the national squad after the Euro's.
@apan990

@@eddybulich3309 exactly, we could have a midfield 3 of modric, KDB or prime frank lampard and still lost, our attackers just suck, and you can only win games for so long with a terrible offense, we did our best with what we have and honestly a WC semi final with possible 3rd place finish is still massive for us.

I don’t understand all the fuss about this penalty and against Argentina in general. The GK blocked Julian way after the ball went the other way, he should have moved away (and yes, he could have done or at least attempted that). It was unlucky for Croatia but still penalty. Argentina may not be the best team, but is a worthy finalist since none of their opponents were clearly superior on the pitch except perhaps Arabia.

I am not one of those conspiracy theorists about fifa and cheating etc and this wasnt that,but that was never a penalty,the person with the momentum is the only person who can avoid a collision,the ball was already shot,with Alvarez having no chance of reaching it again even if the collision didnt happen,but Livakovic's feet were set,he stopped moving,made himself as big as possible to block the ball and Alvarez ran into him,and no Livakovic couldnt move away because the he was on his knees and the collision happened about half a second after he set into his position,its a tight call but if reviewed its not a penalty,actually its a foul on Livakovic because Alvarez was the one who caused the collision,and this is not just my opinion,I always watch the ex or current UCL refs after the game commenting on the positives and the negatives,and all of them said its not a pen,and I agree,Livakovic set in his defensive stance,not moving not trying to foul Alvarez just trying to stop the ball,Alvarez already shot it,no chance of getting it back and then colliding into the gk,clear as day that its not a pk,maybe not on first glance in speed but on the VAR check for sure

Congrats to Argentina for advancing to the finals, it was definitely deserved. Croatia's lack of a world class striker was very badly felt during this game....despite wonderful possession football, they created next to no danger at all - and they did not have a plan B like the Dutch had. However, am I the only one who thinks it's weird that in 2 consecutive games, a PEN is awarded to ARG without any VAR check at all? I would say at this stage, at this level, with so much at stake such a decision at least warrants a quick check to see the incident from different angles and in slow-motion. To me, it looks like Alvarez clatters into the goalkeeper, and hits the keeper's right knee: in slow-motion you can clearly see the force of the hit spins the goalkeeper around, and at no time did he lunge or make a challenge on Alvarez. Only for this reason, a VAR check would have been the right decision.
