Great video. I've had dinner but now I'm drooling for steak & chips in the Kalahari. Being away on a work trip, watching this made me miss my 990.

What an adventure! So question: why always start in 2nd?
@PierreBreytenb
@PierreBreytenb 27 күн бұрын
At the risk of getting too technical... Just a basic explanation... In very thick sand that sucks in your wheels when you stop, you need to spin up the rear more aggressively and with consistent torque when you want to pick up speed and break loose. Remember, you want to get up to speeds as soon as possible so your front wheel can start skimming the top of the soft sand. If you have to shift from 1st to 2nd at slow speed, the front tends to tuck much easier and drop back into the deep stuff.
@seanfrench1029
@seanfrench1029 23 күн бұрын
Obviously do that on a bike that has the low-down power to pull away in sand in 2nd but also, the gap (drive ratio) between 1st & 2nd is quite significant and the transition can be disruptive.

Hi guys. Great vid and adventure. How do i get hold of some of your routes? Specifically around your Natal;Freestate and Limpopo routes. Again thanks for the inspiration.

@@Muzzy0085 Agreed. Have done for many trips but would love to follow the guys as my GPS/maps do not show all passes especially in the free State Natal regions.

690 or 701 would be ideal for this.

No, it wouldn't. This is 500 territory. I rode both there.

@@motovidlo899 Yes! Especially if you have support vehicle.
@motovidlo899
@motovidlo899 25 күн бұрын
@@ruankotze1044 Only with support vehicle. Look, I don't know what your experience of that area is, but I have ridden it three times, and always solo. On 690 I actually gave up, because the fatigue was getting too much - sure with support vehicle with spare water and stuff you can stop wherever and camp, not so unsupported. On 500 I have ridden from Tsabong to Askham in one day (i.e. what the guys in this vide series took three days to ride). Sure it is not a race and you can split it into sections like they did, but the fatigue on bigger bikes - including 690 which is not greatest offroad bike (I have one) - will just became too much of a limiting factor, and will limit your riding significantly. If I want to get maximum of let's say 5 days of riding there, you will get much more done (be able to ride more tracks and for longer) on 500. Hence the 500 is the ideal bike there. 690 can do it, but it will be much more limiting and hence allow for less exploration in the same time.

@motovidlo899 I absolutely agree. Think you misunderstood my reply or I wasn't clear. I mean yes, 500 would be great especially if you have a support vehicle to carry the gear. I've been in the sand quite a bit. Won't argue that the 500 is the weapon. Was just saying a lighter bikes would be easier. Keep well
@seanfrench1029
@seanfrench1029 23 күн бұрын
Despite what some guys say, if the 690/701 is your only bike, make it work. Choose your love and love your choice. As I'm watching this I'm wondering, if invited, would I do this on my 690 or 990? Both will be hard work but the lighter bike less so. Would a 500 be easier - perhaps!? But, having ridden one for 3 days, on this event I'd like to go for the most comfy bike - 990 (but hard work). As medic - my 690.
