Unbeknownst to North Korea and the rest of the world, Lee Jung-Gil successfully survives his treacherous Mars landing before NASA's Sojourner 1 and Helio's MSAM, making him the first human ever to enter the atmosphere and step onto another planet.

I think the point of the series is to show us how brilliant humans can be to be first. And how utterly stupid at the same time. They all pushed things further than they knew was wise because of all the national-pride issues. High five the Koreans for surprising everyone or slap them for WTF didn't you tell the Mars crews to go look for your people? it could be just a comm issue. But of course they wouldn't want to admit failure. Better pretend it never happened. facepalm.

I’m astounded as to how his oxygen lasted that long, considering the minuscule size of the tiny capsule they arrived in. Was it a suicide mission? That thing was never going to get them back into orbit and fly them home again. Was the intention that they would both die on Mars? Or were they hoping to hitch a ride back to Earth when the Helios arrived? So obviously season 4 has came through and no appearance of china yet in any major scale. The reason why there is a lack of China in the show is likely due to Apple's guidelines on how they want to have China portrayed as a nation, as it would potentially do harm to their Chinese market if they portrayed China as a space adversary, hence no china in the show and the likelyhood on why they went with North Korea instead.

For the Koreans, it was a one-way ticket, that's for sure. This is a Soyuz descent vehicle with an inflatable airlock similar to the block of the Vostok spacecraft (in the universe of the series - rather outdated technologies, purchased or stolen from the USSR). They landed, but would never take off again; the Soyuz lander is not designed for this. They were given pistols simply to shoot themselves when food and oxygen ran out. I don’t think the plan was to hitch a ride at all. He seemed very determined to stay with his capsule and protect it at all costs. If the plan was to hitch a ride back he would have welcomed the Americans and Soviets with open arms. It really was a suicide mission which is totally in line with the government values of North Korea.

When episode 5 showed Danny and Grigori simultaneously stepping onto the Martian surface, I wondered about the ending shot from season 2, which showed a single person stepping onto the surface. I thought that since they both got to Mars first, that shot was just a figurative, non-literal way of showing how humanity would get to Mars by 1995. But, I started to wonder whether or not it was a twist, and episodes 9 & 10 cleared that suspicion! Somehow the DPRK wipes the floor with Danielle and Grigori! XD

I wonder what he was told before he set out? Presumably there was a plan to show the world NK's achievement in the event he landed successfully. Whether or not there was a plan to get him _back_ isn't quite even odds. Best case scenario, he would have been told to establish a base camp and they would have kept sending him canned food until he quietly died up there or the Soviets picked him up.

Well, it was a one way trip, thats way easier when you dont have to worry designing and constructing a ship that can land, and fly back. Also since they lost coms, they thought they died, and they made it look like an unmanned probe from the start anyway, no reason for them to report it was actually a manned spacecraft
