Hollo Hullu You’re wrong, if you search for the English etymology of the word “pistachio”, you’ll find that it was taken from the Italian language
@hollohullu9448
@hollohullu9448 4 жыл бұрын
@@donstrudel1564 Actually it comes from old french which took it from Italian which took it from Greek which took it from Persian, so should we pronounce it the Persian way? And even then, it's a loan word, loan words aren't pronounced as if they were a foreign word, they're pronounced like a native word to the language, there is a reason people pronounce pistachio the way they do.
@donstrudel1564
@donstrudel1564 4 жыл бұрын
Hollo Hullu In Ancient Greek, Latin, Italian(and I’m pretty sure old French too) it was pronounced with a strong K sound, the English version is the only one that differs. I never said that it is supposed to be pronounced as the language from where you took it from, I said that the modern word was taken directly from the Italian of the 16th century, while you said that “it isn’t even taken from Italian”

@ivanabcdefg9375
@ivanabcdefg9375 4 жыл бұрын
It should not drive you crazy because espresso is actually the italian word for express in english. The coffee was named express (in italian) because of the quick brewing method. So expresso in english is not entirely arbitrary, as express is a direct and proper translation.
@leojlg9147
@leojlg9147 4 жыл бұрын
@ivan abcdefg I see where you’re coming from, however the “expresso” pronunciation still bugs me. If you want to translate it, sure, say “express coffee”. I have nothing wrong against it. However if you’re reading or meaning “espresso” then it should be pronounced “espresso”, no weird mixture of the two.

The grammatical reason for the "H" after the "g" ( as in spaghetti) or after the "c" ( as in occhi) is because the vowels "i" and "e" are soft. Without the "h", the words would be pronounced "spajetti" and "occi". Something else which drives me crazy is when people say ask for A panini. Panini is plural----thus, it should be, " May I have a panino"? In Italian it would be "un panino" ( singular)---"due panini " (plural)---this is just a taste of the intricacies of the Italian language. Pardon the pun....😁 Sei una ragazza veramente affabile e cortese, Sofie. Ciao🙋

Salve... Using the rules, it should be pronounced as 'ee'... So italiano would be (ee-tal-ee-ano), and Italia would be (ee-ta-lee-a). But locals might pronunce it slightly different but definitely, the i is an 'ee' sound, not pronunced as e which is 'eh'. I hope this helps. Buonagiornata. :)

I love that she's so aggressive ahaha I know that if I went abroad and pronounced these words correctly nobody would understand me, but I'd say it anyway. The more you hear the right pronounciation, the more luckily it'd be for others to learn, instead of believing that they've been saying it well all along. I guess the problem is a lack of general knowledge about Italian spelling: words are pronounced exactly like they're written (strange, huh?), but of course nobody has to know phonetic rules of every language in the world. Eventually, my question would be: why did they start to mispronounce words in the first place?! The first approach with a language is oral/by hearing, not written, so someone, a long time ago, must have heard the actual pronounciation and then, when he/she came back to his/her country, told his friends about his/her experience. Who cares if the spelling is strange? Just pronounce the world how it should be! Something went definitely wrong.

One note is that Italian vowel pronunciation is different in different parts so some of the open vowels you pronounced especially the e would be different in other parts of Italy (By the way I can tell ur "Italian accent" is from the North)

Ciao Sofie, congratulations for this funny video. Very interesting the two versions of it.Personally when I go to US, I gave up to use the correct pronunciation for Italian words, because often they don't understand me. Funny when, knowing I'm Italian, I've been asked for correct pronunciation 👏, and even funnier when they told me: "Sorry, I couldn't understand because your pronunciation was wrong" 🤔 😱 😂.Sofie, c'è un premio per il decimillesimo (#sepronuncibenequestaormaiseiitaliana) iscritto? 😜

Like everything 🙃 And... One day, a guy wanted a "latte without milk" and I was like😐😐😐 (after some explenation i got him: it wanted just a black coffe, american, without milk 🤣) Your channel is so funny and your pronunciation is very good, I really like to watch videos about these themes) Baci dalla Sardegna🏝️

Pro-tip for Americans, never stand by an Italian holding a knife while they're talking. You may lose a limb or get severely cut by accident. Wondering why well most Italians like to talk with their hands like me and my mother.

Even if ciabatta had one single "t" instead of two, the way it is pronounced in America would still be incorrect. Americans pronounce the letter "t" the same way Italians would pronounce the letter "d". There is no double consonant in the Italian word "patata", yet you would not pronounce it "padada". The same for patente, latino, paterno, italiano, which should not be pronounced padente, ladino, paderno, idaliano.There is a difference in Italian between double and single "t" but it is more subtle than that between the Italian "ciabatta" and the American "ciabada". Many Italians do not always differentiate between single and double "t" in their pronunciation, but they would never say ciabatta the way Americans say it. Hope it helps.
