FOR BEGINNERS
The price has actually come down quite a bit since its introduction in the 1990s. The newest version(s) sell for well under $200, and some of those even include a mount! Orion sold the optical tube (OTA) only for as little as $109.
Early versions had a 6X30 finder and generic eyepieces. Later versions came with a much better 8X40 finder and better Expanse eyepieces, usually 20 mm and 6 mm, and sometimes they even threw in a case. The later versions are preferred if you can find them. Also check Orion's "Clearance" section for bargains.

These are great scopes, and not just for beginners. I have been an amateur since 1979 and bought a used one a couple years ago. They are a great grab and go scope. Also wonderful for wide field views. I used it for comet Neowise and it was perfect! It is also good for basic photography. I got an early version, and did exactly what Ed said. Changed over to the ring assembly.

Thank you very much for this review - I just received my Orion as my first scope and your video was the tipping point. The dobs didn't pass the wife factor, so the Orion seems to be a good second option. My first scope was the Orion tabletop starblast 6" dob. (Was gifted to me) It was ok, but as a taller person, it was hard taking it out into the field without dragging some kind of table or stand along too..That was ok, the real issue was the plastic 1.25" focuser. Very cheap, and was hard to achieve focus at times. It also ended up breaking..ironically right after the warranty expired. 😅 the red dot finder it came with was also useless. I swapped it out for a right angle erect image finder scope. Night and day difference..For me on a dob, they are much more practical. Just my opinon;) Those red dot finders are often very cheap, unreliable and temperamental... At least in my experience. Several of our club members never stop ranting about how bad they are.. even though they no longer have one 😅🙃 overall it was a nice first scope, but I grew out of it very fast. If it had come with a better focuser , I would have gotten more use out of it.. it's Definitely a great option for kids, or younger people looking to get into the hobby.., or for people who plan on using it for occasional views off a balcony, or someplace with a guaranteed sturdy table or stand to put it on. . . Ironically, I was able to get a lot of use out of the base..( with a few modifications.) I used it primarily to have a viewing station on my balcony with some smaller scopes I've had.. anyway, Thanks for all your videos! Always a pleasure to watch!

Just bought a Gskyer short tube 80mm achromat grab and go. Only cost a couple hundred dollars. It looks exactly like the Orion Ed has there, except I use a 90 degree 9x50 spotting scope and I mount it on a Sky Watcher AZ GTi go to mount. With my Canon T2i, entire rig only weighs 14.5 pounds.

These 80mm short tubes are fantastic scopes but they perform the best at lower magnification. They are at their best until about 80 times magnification (5mm eyepiece). Above 80x the image starts to go soft. The good news is that at lower powers the views through the telescope are fabulous and even at 80x that is enough to show the four largest moons of Jupiter and its major cloud bands as well as Saturn and it's rings.

While choosing between a traditional finder and a red dot finder is largely a matter of personal preference, there are practical considerations, as well. Those who live under heavy light pollution, for example, would benefit more from having a traditional finder, through which so many more stars and other objects can actually be seen in comparison to using a red dot finder. Traditional finders are also more precise than red dot finders, which helps those whose telescopes are only capable of relatively narrow true fields of view. They help less with small, short telescopes that have relatively wide true fields of view.

@mitrovarr 3 жыл бұрын
I woukd say to decide mostly on how much you're willing to spend, and maybe a little on how much you want to carry. The ST120 is quite a lot better at everything except terrestrial observation than the ST80 (it has more aperture than you really want for terrestrial and the chromatic aberration becomes problematic). However, it is more expensive, expect to spend about $600 when you also buy a mount. And the whole kit is bigger - not very big overall, but the ST80 is kind of tiny and the ST120 is more of a medium size scope.

@edting
@edting 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, we typically do not use spotting scopes for astronomy. I did an article about this on Scopereviews, you can check that out. Spotting scopes are optimized for birding and terrestrial viewing. For astronomy, the 45 degree angle and helical focusers become inconvenient, the correct-image prisms become unnecessary, and many spotting scopes do not allow you to change eyepieces.

@edting
@edting 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, low/mid priced 10 mm eyepieces are going to have similar issues. They tend to be small and "squinty". Barlowing the 25 mm might be a better solution. For comfortable eyepieces in the 10-15mm range, you're going to have to spend some money, so think carefully before doing so.

Not speaking for Ed, but getting both would not be a mistake. I bought my ST80 back in the mid 90’s and still use it regularly. Today was putting my solar filter onto it and did some sunspot watching (never attempt this without a solar filter!). I also have a mak and they are both used a lot. Two different scopes for different purposes. The mak is a planet and moon specialist. The ST80 is a sky sweeper and open cluster (such as the Pleiades) scope, and I use it daytime with a prism diagonal. Together, they cover everything a beginner could want.

For terrestrial viewing, you need something called a spotting scope. It's beyond what we do here and I don't know much about them. It would be helpful for beginners to see example pictures of what and how well you can see through this scope - how sharp and detailed are they, can you see some planet features (rings, stripes) or they just look like white blobs? As I understand the good beginner telescope should be able to show you a well focused images of bright objects - the planets will be tiny, but well focused, so you can see such features like stripes, rings and satellites. Can you do a comparison of a department store scope like Emarth Telescope Travel Scope 70mm/360mm with similar Orion? It would be very helpful. Thank you.

How easy is this scope to lug around? could I summit a mountain with it on my back? I'm about 2 hours from the Shenandoah Valley and figure I'd take the kids on a stargazing trip.

The scope isn't bad, but what you'll find is the mount could be cumbersome (this is true of all scopes). Mounts that hold telescopes steady are not light or easy to transport.

Haha, no not everything you see on the channel that is mine. The FC76 is fine, however.

My mother went to a department store when I was a kid and got a piece of junk, but got me started. The mount broke and I was heart broken

this is ALL YOUR FAULT!!! i bought one last night on amazon. it was ON SALE!!! orion does NOT show it on sale, ?? now, this is the 'strip' model, i.e. no eyepieces, no mount, no finder, no 45 or 90 degree diagonal. but, this is a good thing for me because i'm not paying for anything i don't want or is of less quality than i want. i'm going to get a zoom eyepiece (i'm thinking a 7mm to 21mm), no quick finder, a better diagonal, an adjustable neutral density filter, and a 1/4"" x 20 mount.
