LYRICS:
For the beauty of the earth,
For the beauty of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies:
Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our joyful hymn of praise.
For the beauty of each hour
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree and flower,
Sun and moon and stars of light:
For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth, and friends above,
For all gentle thoughts and mild:
For each perfect gift of thine
To our race so freely given,
Graces human and divine,
Flowers of earth and buds of heaven:
(F. S. Pierpoint, 1835-1917, slightly altered)
Be Thou My Vision
Gathered from across the Collegium catalogue, Be thou my vision includes all of the church anthems and other sacred pieces for which Rutter is justly famous, representing for the first time a handy compendium of the best-loved Rutter works in their definitive performances by the Cambridge Singers, directed by the composer.
John Rutter, English composer and conductor, is associated with choral music throughout the world. His recordings with the Cambridge Singers (the professional chamber choir he set up in 1983) have reached a wide global audience, many of them featuring his own music in definitive versions. Among John’s best-known choral works are Gloria, Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, and Visions, together with many church anthems, choral songs and Christmas carols.

This song takes me away to a place of long ago. A place of simplicity. A place of safety. A place of agape love. A place of living among angels. A place of sweetness that never goes sour. A place of beautiful harmony. A place of no pain, A place where every creature is loved and adored. A place where there is no rich, no poor, no hunger, no envy, no distrust, or no hate. A place I yearn to return to.

John Rutter's music always puts a smile on my face. I was in choirs all through high school, but unfortunately he did not start composing until after I had graduated. I learned of him through the local classical music station. His music is looked down upon by snobs because it is too approachable. I love it for exactly that reason--it is the most beautiful and glorious music. May God bless him.

I used to sing this in choir as a child but couldn’t understand or enjoy because all I saw around me was evil. I wanted my eyes healed and heard this song title I’d forgotten in my head. I prayed it and teared up and the words on the screen cleared for me. Be thou my vision. Praise the Lord. He is healing me. And thank you for John Rutter Lord.

Rutter is a great choral writer. But he is an ever greater orchestrator, selecting the perfect combination of instruments to enhance his message. Done only with keyboard, his music is still meaningful. Performed with orchestra, the music shimmers.

This song has stuck with me for years, and now as I know that Jesus is coming to rescue His children, I praise Him for giving me eternal life and the hope of being with Him for eternity. We don't know the day and hour, but we know we are chosen to fly up to meet Him in the clouds- 1 Thessalonians 4. Maranatha.

Lyrics by Folliott Sandford Pierpoint (1835-1917), Based on Ephesians 5:20. Pierpoint was Born at Spa Villa, Bath, UK, educated at Queens' College, Cambridge, and taught classics at Somersetshire College, 11 Royal Crescent. 29 at the time he wrote this hymn (1864), he was mesmerized by the beauty of the countryside that surrounded him, looking down from a hill overlooking Bath, admiring the country view and the winding Avon River. Inspired by the view to think about God's gifts in creation and in the church, Pierpoint wrote this text. It was written as a Eucharistic hymn - hence the title of "The Sacrifice of Praise".

Thank you, Simon. The beauty of God's creation inspired Folliott to write these beautiful words, which have inspired so many of us, long after his passing, in 1917. It brings to mind, the hymn I first sang in Sunday school: "All things bright and beautiful." He gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell of the greatness of the one Who has made ALL things well. For this too, we give God thanks and praise.

I disliked them as well. Perhaps the performers was using out of sync in-ears? I mean, it was very, very off time, as in, it would be difficult to be THAT out of time without technical difficulties being the cause. Or perhaps it was actually arranged to be that way, in which case, just... why? I'll give the performer the benefit of the doubt.

It’s hidden here. Hidden in plain sight but it’s here. When God speaks to you and begins to open you up to the Holy Spirit you begin to see it. I would have agreed with you only a few months ago but now I can See. If you can’t See, read the Gospel and ask someone who is true to scripture to explain it to you. Absolutely no church dogma - it must be someone who is true to the Bible. Most churches are currently fallen so find find the right person - the kind of person who can explain why evil exists and why it’s running rampant right now.
