Hello everyone.
It is not easy to weld thin sheet metal with a general welding machine.
Therefore, there are many cases of using a cold welding machine when welding thin sheet metal.
Today I am going to introduce you to some tips on how to weld thin multi-purpose blades with automatic repeat cold welding.
If you apply it to thin sheet metal welding, I think it will be of some help.
Thanks for watching and have a nice week.

Thank you for turning that workpiece around and showing the penetration of the weld. looks ok to me ,hell, that should hold! in your other videos on cold welding, you showed the set up, and it´s beginning to appeal to me. Maybe sometime you can do a stress test so we can find out the strength of these welds. I am considering buying one of these TIG welders from NS Weld for vintage automobile restoration work - it would be ideal - strong enough for thin sheet metal, most important, no distortion! it would beat oxy acetylene welding ( which then has to be hammered flat because of the high heat input, not to mention the amount of dressing work after) Can I get one these welders in Germany?

Thank you. I always enjoy watching your demos. I have more-or-less figured out how to weld thin steel (the thinnest I've worked with was 0.5mm). There are still things I don't understand; for example, why does the pool jump up and deposit itself on the tungsten at ignition, instead of fusing with the surface? Sometimes it does that where the surface is not flat; but sometimes it happens even in the middle of an otherwise successful weld. While I feel that steel is mostly under control, I was never able to figure out what can be done with thin aluminum. Is short-pulse welding possible? I watched 6061's demo where he welds soda can metal to a piece of thick aluminum, forming a very thick bead; I understand, the thickness of the base metal and of the bead are critical for heat control. I wonder if it is possible to butt-weld two thin aluminum plates, without chilling. The aluminum job I want to do is to weld the ends of a pinned bicycle rim. The profile has a cavity inside, so I will only be able to weld from one side and need good penetration. The alternative to welding will be to braze it with zinc, but that will result in an ugly joint that will be hard to smooth (and I need a smooth surface for braking). Any ideas for what can be done with aluminum?

Welding thin aluminum with a short pulse is possible, but not an easy task. If I come up with a good idea in the future, I will make a related video.

Is it possible to spot weld on a regular TIG machine? I can't seen to get the arc to cut off fast enough..
@GeneSelkov
@GeneSelkov 2 жыл бұрын
Possible, with some limitations. The procedure shown here uses a regular TIG set-up in pulse mode. My machine allows me to set pulse width to 1% of the period. That is only convenient when welding simple shapes (flat or circular). With more complex shapes requiring precise positioning, I don't want to be forced into a cycle. For that, I use a torch with a gas valve in the handle and this pulse generator: www.ebay.com/itm/283969229999 Independent argon feed is important because accurate millisecond-scale timing is not possible on top of at least 1 second of the shortest pre-flow. Disabling the pre-flow altogether and feeding argon straight from the bottle allows the machine to respond to pulses in the trigger circuit. That method is not without problems because of other delays in the trigger that still happen when pre-flow is disabled; the delays may appear random because the trigger is synchronized to the AC power while the pulse generator is not. So it is not possible to send accurate 10ms pulses; by setting pulse duration to about 200ms, I get 10 .. 30ms arc pulses; the longer the driver pulse is, the more accurate is the arc timing. The minimal pulse length at which my machine responds reliably is around 190ms. I do get pretty good results with this set-up.

Some welders have a suitable spot weld function. However if you have a good pulse function (a more common feature) you can do virtually the same thing. Set up a high-amp narrow pulse (maybe 10-15% on time), at about 1 per second. Low background current, about 10%. The arc doesn't go completely out and the gas doesn't shut off so no problems with pre-post flow. There are some videos of that here on KZfaq.

Las configuraciones utilizadas en el video son soldadura en frío de repetición automática, no configuraciones de pulso. Tienes razón en que se usaron 100 amperios.
