In 1981, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY marked a new era for James Bond in more ways than one. After going to space in the controversial (but wildly successful) MOONRAKER, the choice was made to bring James Bond Movies back down to earth. To that end, John Glen was promoted to director, a post he would keep all through the eighties, while Roger Moore's James Bond was given a mature, order edged overhaul. The result was a critically acclaimed, successful Bond outing that stands as one of the series most underrated gems. Join us on James Bond Revisited as we take a look back at FOR YOUR EYES ONLY (1981).

Absolutely unreal the Bill Conti score is scored the way it is. It was a soundtrack for its time and is truly enjoyable. The music played during the bobsled scene is one of the best in the entire franchise in my opinion. It has extraordinary energy behind it.

@@jasonblalock4429 I enjoyed his score, very much on par of that times with the sort of faster paced disco style. Albeit, there is some cues from his previous work for sure and it sounds cheesy on places. But the bobsled scene music is a real highlight, and it's always pleasing in these Bond movies that they used different composers occationally to bring in some different edge to them.

I was lucky enough to go to an 'Evening with Roger Moore' in the UK a few years before he passed away. When he took questions from the audience, I asked if it had taken much persuasion for him to play the part in Cannonball Run. He explained they originally wanted him to play James Bond in the movie, but because of contract issues that was strictly forbidden. They only way they could get around it was to play a character who was under the illusion that he was the actor Roger Moore, who behaved as if he was James Bond. He didn't mention any trouble the role caused though. He was a great person to listen to - extremely switched on and very funny in real life.
@dreyn7780

And Why would he. Its obvious the the motion picture audience that contracts have caused the death of cinema. I've seen whole businesses full of absolute rubbish products. I've retired decades ago because of this crap product. We are offered JUNK to buy, for 25 years. Copyright, contracts, legislation, corruption, have STUFFED the motion picture business. Giving these pricks in power, the silent treatment doesn't work.

It was intended as a dig at the character of Blofeld (as well as Kevin McClory, who thought the Bond movies would fail without Blofeld). Back when Cubby Broccoli was growing up, it was considered a cliche for low/mid-level neighborhood gangsters to gain leverage on pushcart merchants by buying them businesses. Having Blofeld bargain for his life by offering to buy Bond a deli is their way of showing that, despite all his pretensions and grand schemes, at the end of the day he's still just a common gangster, no different than some thug shaking down a candy shop for a few pennies.

one of the great underrated bond films, and you nailed every reason. it's kinda forgotten because it tried to be a character/espionage movie at a time when superficiality ruled the screen, but with some minor script tweaks it could've been a daniel craig classic. carole bouquet is my all time favorite bond girl (yes even over eva green), and sheena easton's opening theme is otherworldly good; easily the best of all time. on my personal top 5 bond films for sure.

I've retired decades ago because cinema was destroyed by copyright contracts and evil legislation etc. Etc. etc. And now these shits turn around and attack ME for music in their stupid games. They haven't made a cent out of me in 28 years because of them and now they get awarded copyright breaches even though the videos don't ever pay me a dime. Score owners must pay for their destruction of the film industry back in the 1990's. I've retired from being part of the money scam. The owners are the only people left from back in the 1990's. Those giant screen cinemas are all dead but someone forgot to get rid of ALL the industry who was responsible for the death of cinema. Pretty much. Brolin probably wouldn’t have stood a chance against Connery. It’s funny. As much as the edgy Bond fans love to shit Roger Moore for “ruining” the franchise, the fact of the matter is Moore’s Bond movies made way more money than any Connery’s movies did. That doesn’t mean one is better than the other, but it did show that Roger Moore was profitable.

You made a quirky remark reference the music that Conte made for this bond film but what you don’t know is this. I was a very young man growing up in WestGermany when this movie came out. My Dad was stationed in Stuttgart and I had a blast over there. In the movie of the ski chase seen, the 70s style electric music that was used, was very popular in Europe. So much so that the local American military TV station “AFN” used it, a lot, in their commercials. It’s a facet of life for military brats overseas that non-military stateside adults, let alone children, will never understand. This was definitely one of the greater movies for me and probably many of my fellow classmates that we look back on; that it brings a great moment of our childhood forward.

I hated Moonraker, and I think everyone thought they were just getting silly more than anything else at this point, so a... not stripped down, but a pared down and almost back-to-basics approach was so welcome! It was a no-nonsense Bond, almost like what you got during the Timothy Dalton run. And one other thing... I think this was the first Bond movie to get a full showing on cable TV (it was still really new when Moonraker came out), so having it on TV several times a month could very well have shown Bond to more people for the first time than had ever wanted to go see him in the theater. All in all, as you suggest, I think if Roger had ended it there, he’d have been better off. But hey, that’s just me. :)

Topol was so good and charismatic that for most of the movie, I was waiting for him to be revealed as the real villain! Hahaha! And while I somewhat agree with your take on Bill Conti (we can’t all be a John Barry), I still think it was a good score and fit the action oriented aesthetic of this movie.

For your Eyes Only was the first Bond film I saw at the cinema (I was 10) and will always be one of my favourites. Definitely Roger Moore at his best. Love the action, Carole Bouquet. Wow. And love the Ending, even the Thatcher gag.

Yes! I love for your eyes only. I love this movie. Roger Moore at his best. I like how he is less lady obsessed. The main bond girl is great. The action is well done. Colombo is Awesome! And the villain is good. The story is well done I think and the movie is more of an adventure odyssey that was well planned out instead of a cheap script. Bond is more cold blooded just like the books but is still charming. The cliff hanger scene is awesome! I give this movie an A-. Great review Joblo I loved it. I cant wait for license to kill! Also it my moms favorite bond movie so thank you!

IMO this is the best of the Moore Bond's and is often forgotten. It strikes a nice balance between the Moore campiness, some seriousness and some genuinely good action. It also ticks a box for me with Bond having a great ally in Columbo.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture was not a flop. It broke the record for highest opening weekend gross o, and ended up making back more than triple its budget during its theatrical release. Up until Star Trek: 2009, it was the highest grossing Star Trek film, adjusted for inflation. Other than that, great review.

TMP was a success but Paramount was pissed off that the budget ballooned to 35 million dollars which was 20 million more than they wanted to spend. That's why Roddenberry was "booted upstairs" for the subsequent TOS films

I never in a million years thought that when I saw this film at the theater, that I would eventually meet Sir Roger a number of years later. And not only did I meet him, but I also met Richard Kiel, (Jaws), and John Rhyes Davis, who played Pushkin in The Living Daylights. It was a wonderful experience to have met all of them....

Moore was my Bond growing up and he was 46 when Live And Let Die came out BUT he looked very good, BUT by the time For Your Eyes Only came out he was well into 51 and sadly he looked every second of it, his four picture deal had run out with Moonraker and really should have walked away after that. I was 12 in 1981 and saddened that Lewis Collins never got a chance as i was a huge fan of The Professionals😢

What a relief to see “For Your Eyes Only,” after the crap that had preceded it! This remains, far and away, Roger Moore’s best Bond film: script, production design, action, locations; and above all, a director who got Mr Moore to finally play the role of James Bond! A film in the tradition of the best one of all - “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” A film that makes good use of its source material, by the master, Ian Fleming. See how well old Roger can do, when he sets his mind to it? And when he has a director with a clear vision of the Bond universe? Too bad it wasn’t sustained in the next two films!

Sorry, I forgot - excellent supporting cast, including Topol and Julian Glover! Who could not be dazzled by Carole Bouquet? And Bill Conti’s fresh, innovative score to liven up the proceedings. One of the best films in the series!

Good review! Seeing this movie on Blu-ray in 2013 really opened my eyes to how underrated it is and made it share the place of my favorite Bond with "The Living Daylights"...It has great locations on Cortina D'Ampezzo and the Greek islands and wonderful underwater sequences (even the "dry for wet" ones look great!) with cool submarine gear - that according to John Glen's commentary was all real submarine equipment -, great presence from Topol and Lynn Holly-Johnson and in my opinion the best take on the "Bond is getting old" angle than any other entry in the franchise. I only disagree about Bill Conti's score, which I consider the best non-John Barry one in the series and really suits the era and style of the movie, especially the piece that plays during the Citroën 2CV chase sequence in the beginning - Conti was actually recommended by Barry himself after he was forbidden from having any income in the UK on that year as a tax expatriate...

Well, I've just experienced the 2021 blu-ray DVD version and i need a new emotional system cause mine was destroyed from the intense emotional experience of home cinema. The sounds were SO detailed I could actually touch them they were that good. The sounds were flying around the room. I'm extremely happy with the extremely lowest sound experience from this version. At the lowest level its the original cinema sounds and it blows you away. From There you can boost the sounds to way more intense levels. You can boost upto 120 speakers.

I liked the scene where Bond offed the hitman Loche. He was a cold-blooded character and so his going off the side after being shot was a rather fitting end. It should be remembered that Bond in the book series could be rather cold-blooded himself when dealing with villains.

Despite the pre-credit silliness, this is still one of my favourite Moore Bond films (others being Live and let Die and Spy). Mostly because of the fate of Locke. Moore did something similar with the bald fat man on the rooftop in Spy, but I guess that is not so important since he was just a low-rent henchman and not one of the main adversaries. Sheena Easton is absolutely the best Bond track.

FYEO...was the first time i was aware that a new Bond movie was coming out. On a School trip to London i saw the movie posters everywhere. The one where Bond is aiming the gun at the Woman...as seen from the POV of behind her legs.....kinda makes an impression on a School kid. As for the Lotus... what! That red one is awesome...it should have had more screen time. Again for a kid in the 80's that was genuinely an exotic sports car of the era. Nice review....keep 'em coming 👍
