You joke but ask some lady who was recently on the news and a bear got in her house because despite knowing bears went into her yard, she kept leaving her patio door open. Her two tiny dogs scared the bear out of the house. The bear politely walked around inside her house and didn't even touch anything.

I ate 山菜 at the ryokan of a yamabushi at mount Haguro at 出羽三山. I loved it but was baffled with the name and actually didn't realize they are actually foraged in the wild. This must just be so much fun. Sorry for your car keys.

I spent the night at one of the shukubo at Mt. Haguro as well and ate their sansai meal too! So good!!

I'm new to this channel and wow, this was enchanting! I laughed when you said koshi abura is found in "just places like this" (as opposed to somewhere more picturesque) because it's quite lovely there, too. Looking forward to more adventures. :)

Love sansai! It's quite amazing how restaurants can fry up those fragile local herbs and vegetables into a tempura that is crunchy and retains the wonderful flavour of the veggies themselves. Really enjoy these foraging videos - learning lots!

Dude, if this were in Japanese and without music, I could see this being used in one of those 心霊映像 summer compilations with a deep voiced narrator detailing how you missed the 幽霊 lurking nearby. But, its just a lovely dude with a sunny disposition looking for forest happiness.

Another beautiful video! You may want to think about Alaska to hike and forage. When you were going thru worrying about bears, I knew exactly how you felt. Ive left my bear spray home too many times also. I have to say, you made me laugh when you spit out the bug.

I would love to get a bear on camera!! There isn't really a bear sanctuary per say, but there is a small zoo that only houses bears in Akita. I think they do their best to treat them well, but it's very concrete and kind of depressing looking if you're used to nice spacious well-funded zoos. I have thought about showing it, but I'm afraid there would be a backlash from people that find it cruel to the bears just by the nature of how it appears. (Again, I think the staff at the facility are doing their best, but it really could use more funding.)

I always carry a gun in the north Georgia mountains/ Appalachian Trail because of bears and other animals. I understand that's not an option in Japan, but I wouldn't feel safe without one. Thanks for the video though bro, keep it up.

Interesting. I don't do it in any ritualistic or formal manner, but I am generally filled with awe and gratitude when I'm out in wild places. And I do stop at shrines in these wild places and offer my gratitude there.

There are dozens of different edible plants that people forage for here! I'd really recommend going with a local though!

@4:40: "Billy! GET OUT OF THERE!" If you don't mind me asking, how do you make tempura? Maybe some of the "Tenpura masutā" here can can give you some pointers... @7:48, that looks a bit like a cyclamen but it isn't, do you know what it is? Quite nice (more of that please 😁)

The simple explanation of how to make tempura is to mix flour and water, dip something in that batter, and then put that in boiling oil for a short period of time. But if course doing it well is an art. The flower is an Asian fawnlily! It's called Katakuri in Japanese.

Thanks Quinlan! My thinking was that if you'd posted a more detailed description of your tempura method (type of flour/s, iced?, what source of carbonation etc) some of the expert cooks in your sub collective should have been able to spot areas of improvement and inspire you to become a one stop shop so to speak... Dumb idea 🙏 Your thinly-sliced-pork recipe sounds hard to beat, anyway. Thank you very much for the info on that fawnlily, I love that stuff... It turns out to be -endangered- threatened, so also great that you found it.

I had to google that. And it's apparently Itadori in Japanese. Yes- I have picked and eaten that! It's a bit of a pain as you have to boil and peel it, but supposedly it's really good for you. Doesn't taste bad either!

Nope... I just made some copies. So now I don't have a car key with the remote unlock function, but no big deal. (It was like $150 to get a new one and I'm poor right now so I'm just using normal manual keys for now.)
