Except Flash Gordon 15 part film serial in 1936 had Jean Rogers as Dale Arden, and Priscilla Lawson as Princess Aura based on 1934 comics stripe, Jean played Dale also in Sequel Flash Gordon goes to Mars film serial 1938 and it also had Beatrice Roberts as Queen Azura. 1939 Buck Rogers Film serial had Constance Moore as Lt. Wilma Deering based on character in a pulp magazine in 1929 although originally called Anthony Rogers. Buster Crabbe played both Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. So Anne Francis was not the first. I'm not even sure if the others were.

hollyweird. only wants to make money. not make good movies. and this is why the drive-ins went belly up, and now the walk-in's are failing. at $17.USD a seat. $5.USD a soda. and $15.USD for a small popcorn. as a kid we popped up a grocery bag or two of popcorn at home. brought our own soda, and went to a drive-in for two movies. i do not even know the price as i was about age 10 now 62. the sat at the walk-in was cheap. parents dropped there brats off and picked them up hrs latter.

@Saber Couple things. Every reliable source I've ever seen lists his construction cost at the time between $100,000 and $125,000 which is equivalent to about 1.1 million dollars as I write this. That made Robby the most expensive prop at the time but only as a proportion of the budget. Also, I don't know why you had scare quotes around your misspelling of the word _loan._ Id Monster Artist Joshua Meador was an employee of Walt Disney and he was indeed loaned to the MGM Production by his regular employer.

One of the best movies of all time. So far ahead of its time. I have my own copy (with the 'missing' stuff and all), and watch it whenever the muse strikes. The one piece of 'missing' footage I mourn the most is near the end. They're locked in the lab. The captain has convinced Morbius the Monster is his own Id given form. When the creature breaks through the door, Morbius charges the Monster. It picks him up, like it did the crewman, and dashes him to the floor. I saw this on an early TV airing, many years ago. Later, 'censors' felt that scene was too violent and refused to allow it to air again unless the scene was removed. It was cut, alright... from the original... and destroyed. There are no 'copies' remaining to reconstruct it from. It explains why Morbius is suddenly on the ground dying. Damned shame it's gone. Thanks for the Forbidden Planet love.

If you look at the time period between 1950 and 1960, there were several seminal and groundbreaking films that set the tone for sci fi for all time. From The Thing From Another World, When Worlds Collide, War of the Worlds, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet, This Island Earth, Them !, The Incredible Shrinking Man, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and so many others. Given the time period and the available special effects, there was some fantastic work done by the preeminent masters of the time, such as Willis O'Brien, Ray Harryhausen and Eji Tsuburaya in Japan. In fact I forgot to add the original Japanese cut of Gojira, the one without Raymond Burr in it, which was made in 1954. These movies started the ball rolling towards what we see today as almost commonplace effects. Without them, there would no Star Wars or Marvel Avenger movies.
@ottovonnekpunch1268

Yes, I remember "When Worlds Collide" as a kid and always thought this film could make for a VERY topical reboot today! The very idea of a planet (or large comet or asteroid) on an unavoidable collision with Earth! The moral/ethical dilemma of who do you save aboard the space-ark is still powerful! Yeah, I know its been recently done in "2012", but there's still room to explore that possibility...

@@tyrssen1 I think this was before the Moog was invented. Louis and Bebe Barron built electronic circuits to create the sounds, and every time they created a sound, it destroyed the circuit, so they had to record the sounds and splice them together later. It was a very time-consuming process, because they had to keep building new electronic circuits to create each new sound. I think they deserved a lot more recognition than they got.

I always love the special effects. In the 70s I had a chance to see the same footprint effect done with wet concrete for and invisible Man TV show. In that case, they put the footprints beneath the wet cement, all of it under pinned by a single long board that was pulled out a step at a time, and the wet cement dutifully filled the space in the shape of a foot. Very cool to see it in person and then a few months later watch it on TV. Very cool indeed. Peace,

Not sure what they used for this effect, probably a mix of propmaker's fuller's earth etc. I did notice the effect in the deleted clip was flawed: in the second and fifth (I think) footstep some soil to the side coolapses, and in the fourth, the imprint of the claw doesn't collapse. I remember no such flaws in the scene in the movie.

This movie along with it's predecessor 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' began the Sci-fi craze leading up to Star Trek and Star Wars type movies and Tv series.

Roddenberry should have pitched his original The Cage pilot as a Forbidden Plant for TV rather that a Wagon Train to the Stars. This could well be an episode of Star Trek TOS with almost no changes other than the actors and characters' names.

So brilliant. We are the ones flying saucers. Thank you channel 32 Chicago for letting me see this masterpiece for the first time. Sunday sci-fi marathon. Also saw the Time Machine that day. There was another movie, but I forget Edit: I remember now, it was THX 1138. How could I forget??

With all due respect to "Robby The Robot Channel", I have a DVD copy of "The Forbidden Planet" that I had purchased over 15 years ago that had a bonus feature. It contained all of this so-called lost footage which is I believe available on most DVD copies of this film...............

What an amazing achievement in special effects. I wait to possibly be corrected, but didn’t MGM turn to Disney to provide the ID monster and laser effects etc? The lack of a conventional musical soundtrack to be replaced with electronic music was inspired. I always wonder what would have happened if MGM had continued the crew’s adventures? Would it have progressed to multiple movies or a tv series? ❤️

In those shots where the gun beams have been added yet - I can just imagine Adams saying, don't worry crew , our blaster weapons will drive it back and then....... For God's sake who forgot to put the weapons in their chargers last night. Run everyone run.

I would say that the special effects 1st influenced Lost in Space with the freezing tubes and the clear dome navigation equipment with a small version of the ship inside the equipment. Not to mention the influence of Roby and the B-9 Robot of LIS.

How well I remember it! As a (well!) underage kid, I was supposed not to be able to see it. My folks didn't agree with my sci-fi interests. Still, the older brother of a friend was a projectionist at the local theater, and he kindly arranged for us to get in via a side door - free! I had my revenge, tho. Later I worked at NASA/Ames on solar wind data from various probes!
