So with all the crazy different attempted solutions to barrel cooling I've seen, why didn't this get more love? I mean forced air cooling is a proven concept. Like Ian pointed out, it's on all our computers. Did it just not work here? I feel like I'm missing half the story on this gun.

@sthenzel
@sthenzel 4 жыл бұрын
Probably more in the vicinity of a drum, I guess. But whatever it was, I think it is relatively safe to assume the rifle worked as intended with the 5rd-mag. Even a guy like Ross most likely would not have had tinkered with designing a high-cap feed for a gun that didn´t work at all.

@ianc4901
@ianc4901 4 жыл бұрын
Considering it only works when the gun is firing, probably not very well. The latent heat from inside the chamber would take time to be absorbed through the barrel, by the time that happened the fan would have stopped spinning. It would remove a small amount of heat if the gun was immediately reloaded and fired again but I doubt it would move enough air to make any difference overall. To be really effective it needs to spin very fast for more than a couple of seconds after the gun stops firing.
@StormBringare

Didn't it work fairly well on the Lewis? Obviously that was a simpler system but the same principle at least 🤷🏻‍♂️

For those Canadians that have not been to our War Museum, I do highly recommend. I have been probably a dozen times and always found it a wonderful way to spend ones day while in our nation's Capitol. I was there one time, for about 6 hours, and was currently in the section dedicated to the Second World War, when the announcement came across the PA that the museum was closing. A couple of moments later a large security guard came by and said "Sir, the museum is now closed. You have to go". To which I responded "But I don't know how it ends. Do we win? WHO WINS!!!!". Luckily he got the joke I was escorted out.

I will echo the other Canadian comments: We would love seeing these on display. I think the Museum ought to make room for all the tinkering items and perhaps even some of non-standard "but used in the field" ones. Lots of great odd duck mechanicals with creative implementations.

My uncle was building a 572 Ross in 1963 .based on a 600 nitro bottled to 5o cal. Problem was chamber pressure . He new old man barnes and was hoping his billet rounds would be the salvation as powder options were ,cordite or cordite . Right in that time frame gunny Hathcock put the first sniper rounds out of a ma deuce and the path of history took another path .with today's powder we may have know it instead of the berets.

That deep recessed muzzle, extended outer barrel tube is interesting, perhaps for reducing muzzle flash or report.
