This movie is still holds up as a classic 80's action movie with tons of creativity woven into it. Reflecting on the film now, I can say it's a bit campy, but Big Trouble is still one my all time fav action flicks!

An absolute classic action-fantasy-comedy. I wish Carpenter had did more like this. I have a movie poster on my wall for it among others. So many memorable lines.

The best part about this movie is that it does it all in just over 90 minutes. Today's filmmakers could learn a lesson, good writing and editing are your friend.

A fantastically bonkers movie that is written better than most films in the last decade. A great mash-up of a comedy, action, sci-fy, fantasy film. I love how they make a joke about a situation instead of trying to make sense of it with exposition. "How did you get up there?.... It wasn't easy!!" Great reaction, lovely ladies. 👍👍

When I was a kid our local HBO alternative was "Prism" out of Philadelphia. "Big Trouble in Little China" was shown every day I think, for an entire summer. As kids we watched it over and over again, and it just kept getting funnier. It's that type of movie.

This is my favorite movie. It is always only 2 clicks away on my phone or computer. I saw it in the theater. Anytime I catch something I state..... It's all in the reflexes.

Movie upends the norm. Kurt Russell (doing John Wayne after having done Clint Eastwood in Escape from NY) is actually the sidekick. Its Wang who is the real action hero. Role reversal. Saw it in theaters and the audience erupted in applause at the end. The Bluray has been viewed a lot for neophytes...and myself.

This is one of my favorite movies. I used to have this on rotation in my mini movie library as a kid. It was "The Golden Child", "Mannequin" and "Big Trouble in Little China". Seen it tons of times. Hilarious and action packed.

The best way to watch this movie, is to watch it three times back to back, with the last time starting at 2 AM. That last time, you will swear this movie is the greatest thing ever.

“This really pisses me off to no end!” always makes me laugh, coming from an ancient sorcerer. I’ve loved this movie so much, and been disappointed that nobody else I know likes it or has even seen it. Two of my old friends only recently discovered it and they think it’s great. One of them bought t-shirts for all three of us.

All John carpenter movie must be watched! Particularly starman, assault on precinct 13, escape from New York, the Thing, and others. He is also the master of minimalist creepy theme music!

So many memorable quotes. I had a hard time choosing one. Because if the breakneck speed of this movie, I do recommend anyone watch this movie 2 or 3 times. Fun Fact: The Three Storms were partly the inspiration for the popular character of thunder god Raiden from Mortal Kombat fighting video game series, while David Lo Pan was the inspiration for the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung. Blade Enthusiast Fact: The short knives wielded by the "Three Storms" warriors, that Thunder calls "Hui Huan Dou" (Soul-Returning Blades) are in fact Nepalese Kukri. These knives are used by all Gurkha military regiments in the British Indian Army. Studio Hacks Fact: Kurt Russell confessed on the DVD commentary that he was afraid of starring in the movie because he had made a string of movies that flopped at the box office. When he asked John Carpenter about it, he told Kurt that it didn't matter to him - he just wanted to make the movie with him. John Carpenter and Kurt Russell explain on the audio commentary that the test screening was so overwhelmingly positive, that both of them expected it to be a big hit. However, 20th Century Fox put little into promoting the movie, and it ended up being a box-office bomb. In addition, the film was released in the midst of the hype for Aliens (1986), which was released sixteen days afterwards. However, it went on to be a huge cult hit through home video. Carpenter and Russell explained that the reason the studio did little to promote the film, was because they simply didn't know how to promote it.

I found this as a kid and did exactly as you said, fell in love watched it over and over and to this day it's one of my all time favorites!

I discovered this at 21 and for 14 years its Still one of my fav movies of all time hehe. The movies sense of self awareness only adds to the comedy. Always keep apart of that inner child alive.

Grew up watching this, so yes- you are absolutely correct that if you got to experience it in your younger days you have a deeper love and appreciation for it. What I really enjoyed later, is finding others who loved it just as much. Back in my sub days, this was a crew favorite on movie nights and we really got a kick out of watching it together with others who grew up with it. Awesome review! I don’t know if it’s been said or not but one thing a lot of people overlook about this movie is that the character of Jack Burton is the side kick almost comic relief of the movie. This is important because it makes Wang the hero which was unusual for Hollywood. They were just starting to look at a hero being a none white person in a movie. A little side note, according to interviews the fight scene at the end used about 2/3s of the films budget to create.

Since you watched this another great John Carpenter classic that I would recommend is They Live it's good and there is a lot of truth to it as well

The birth of Mortal Kombat! Love this film!

If you enjoyed this movie, I recommend the "Last Dragon"... Fairly similar style, and made about the same time... A little more similar to this, the "Golden Child", with Eddie Murphy, also made about the same time. I, personally, would place "Big Trouble in Little China" as a slightly better overall package, but I grew up on all three of these movies, and have seen them all over and over.

This is a film that really rewards 2nd & 3rd (or more) viewings. There’s way too much going on to grasp it all in one watch.

I watched this as a kid, 7 or 8. I understood that Jack Burton was out of his element. It's classic when you understand Kurt Russell was the comic relief. So many 80s tropes. If you date this and just want fun... CLASSIC

I enjoyed watching this movie in the theater when my parents took me. I remember my parents laughing throughout the movie. A couple of other action/comedy 80's movies I recommend are Running Scared w/Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines and Midnight Run w/Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin. Good stuff ladies!

Another gem of the 80s, good job girls 😁 I remember back then in 1987, had been seeing Christine, Escape from NY and Starman before that one, I wasn't even sure what I was really watching - it was so different that those three and everything else Carpenter directed up until that point. I had great fun nevertheless in the cinema, and went to see it again immediately a few days later. My admiration for that movie only rose since.

What makes this great is that Jack Burton is the sidekick (to Wang) that THINKS he's the hero of the story.

One of the funniest Action Comedy Martial Arts Fantasy movies ever made! Originally Jack Nicholson and Clint Eastwood were considered for the role of Jack Burton and that the film was going to be a western taking place in 1900 San Francisco. Burton was going to be a gunslinger meeting up with an old friend Wang Chi, an expert in Martial Arts and ancient Chinese mysticism where he tries to help him fight off Lo Pan, an evil centuries old sorcerer who plans to destroy San Francisco with an earthquake. There were going to be a sequel and reboot to the movie with Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Kurt Russell playing Burton and a skeptical trucker where they must fight off Lo Pan once more Both of these films would be cancelled due to Fox Disney merger.

oh you are spot on Michelle about Kurt R being one of the actors who did auditions fo HAN SOLD. There are a couple of short interviews in Y tube where he discusses it. He really is one of the best all around actors.

"Feels like Star Wars..." John Carpenter was inspired by a Hong Kong movie called "Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain" which is, without hyperbole, one of the most bonkers crazypants movies ever. Often called the Steven Spielberg of Hong Kong for his string of popular, visually striking hits, film-maker Tsui Hark made Zu after seeing Star Wars, inspiring him to make a classic Chinese fantasy with Hollywood visual effects, hiring some of the Star Wars FX crew to work on it. The end result is... dizzying to say the least... The script for "Big Trouble" was originally a Western. Jack was a cowboy trying to get back his horse, not his truck. It was inspired by the Tong Wars, real-life gang violence between Chinese criminal factions in San Francisco in the 1860's. Carpenter and the studio decided it would work better if they started in the more familiar present day to represent "reality" before they descended into the bizarre subterranean madness.

Great movie, loved it as a kid when we saw it in the drive-in, still love it now. As has been stated, if Escape from New York saw Kurt Russell channeling his inner Clint Eastwood, Big Trouble sees him incorporating his John Wayne. Loved him and Dennis Dun (Wang Chi) in this, they play off each other really well.

Movie is pretty good. I took my kid to the fancy movie theater event that the dinner theater does every year. My kid loved the audience participation.

This was originally meant to be a sequel to The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai (1984), another cult classic "gonzo" comedy starring Peter Weller, Jeff Goldblum, and John Lithgow . but it didnt do well, so the script got repurposed. Banzai's villain was supposed to be "Hanoi Xan", a chinese mastermind villain not unlike Lo Pan in this.

There's a drinking game where you watch the movie and have to take a drink every time Jack asks a question.

I was an 80's kid and I can't even count how many times I've watched this movie. And FYI a lot of the lore from the Mortal Kombat video games were influenced from this movie.

Ladies, glad you enjoyed Big Trouble in Little China. It's a great flick. I saw it when it came out and watched it so many times since. So many 80's movies were fun and creative without all the CGI overdone. Practical effects may date the movie a bit, but really does goes give it a grounding that just can't be overlooked. If you want to check out another fun 80's movie, may I recommend : The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eight Dimension Staring the likes of Peter Weller, John Lithgow , Jeff Goldblum, Ellen Barkin and so many more. That is correct, Kurt Russell did audition for the role of Han Solo in Star Wars back in 1975, along with John Travolta and Sylvester Stallone. I believe George Lucas finally decided that Kurt was a bit too young to play Han Solo at the time, as he was the same age as Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker.

Edit: Just Googled them there were three movies in the "Dexter Riley" movies, a trilogy of three high-concept Disney fantasy-comedies starring Kurt Russell as Dexter, with Joe Flynn and Cesar Romero. Kurt Russell begin the trilogy when he was 18.

there were urban legends that chinatowns had portals. love this movie. james hong who plays lo pan, was the voice of po's adopted goose father in all kung fu panda movies. that beast was a bigfoot, a chinese breed called a yeren.

Might as well have been called "Jack and Wang's Excellent Adventure." So fun.

actually there is a long running theory that this movie would've never happened with out Kurt attached to the film. Its written as a Chinese action film. his character is a side kick. Wang is the main hero. Without Kurt, he was the money maker to get people to go see it.

A good double feature with this one would be THE GOLDEN CHILD starring Eddie Murphy.

Such a great movie. John Carpenter in his golden era. Kurt Russell is a hoot in this. I worked with James Hong, the actor playing Lo Pan, on a short-lived sit com in L.A.. He thought he knew me from somewhere, but I assured him he had not, because I would have remembered that.

If they remake this movie the actors in it would not Do it justice cause they can't find actors like them any more

Kurt starred in 4 carpenter movies. But one of the funniest movies of all time start Kurt, it's called Used Cars! And the producers writers directors of that movie, are a who's who, of Hollywood!

Kim Cattrall who played Gracie Law in this film Kim has Brown Eyes and she had to wear Green Eye Contact Lenses during this movie Kim Cattrall said in an Interview that wearing those Green Eye color contact lenses were Extremely Painful to wear during this movie.

I originally saw it in theater. I used to buy the magazine star log and it was featured in the new section of movies coming out in the next couple of months. If get a chance buy a back issue. Back then there was no KZfaq. Internet. People talked to each other.

I love this movie!! Not sure if anyone else mentioned this already, but the star of the movie was really Dennis Dun (Wang), of course. It was hard to have a Hollywood movie in the 80s with a Chinese lead, so Kurt Russell ended up as the headline but he was written to be the sidekick who only thought he was the hero. Kurt absolutely crushed that role, he must have gained 20 pounds from all the scenery he chewed. And he was an excellent match to Dennis' straight man, I love their relationship in this movie. They just exude "old friend" vibes.

I have a crush on Kurt Russell! He's funny, charismatic and gorgeous! He has that range. He can play any role. I recently rewatched this. It's so good, I'll watch it over and over again!

I seen this in theater as a teen, I loved it than and still do! It's one of my fav 80's movies, I've watched it SEVERAL times..ps you're right about Kurt ALMOST getting the part of Han solo you can actually see him reading for the part in utube ( Kurt Russell reading for part of Han solo ) AND there has been talk for a few years about a remake THE rock playing jack Burton I just don't think it will have the same tone n longevity as the original ...thanks for this review

There was a restaurant in San Antonio that had a kids drink that had a small piece of dry ice in it so it fogged over like those drinks. My kids loved going there. I remember this being a movie on TV all the time, loved watching it, still do. Oddly enough it got pointed out, but I never caught it. The hero in the movie his not Russell, but his friend. Subversion done correctly, the big American is the side kick and the small foreign friend is the hero. Russell did his best John Wayne in a fantasy movie w/this one.

A great film of my teenage years. It had a bit of the ghostbusters vibe for me that quirky comedy was very similar. It was a golden period for that sort of comedy fantasy genre with highlander out a year or so later. Best sound track to, but that showing my age.
