A group of former radar operators have returned to the nuclear bunker where at the height of the Cold War, they helped defend the UK from potential attack. At the time, Britain's frontline defences involved a radar programme called Rotor, with 70 secret stations dotted around the coastline.

I find people who served in the British Armed Forces to be so humble. The overall sentiment seems to be "we just did our bit". Very humble and very admirable. They can also be very willing to respect their enemy. An armed force of gentlemen and ladies it seems. Unfortunately, the British government at the time didn't respect those brave ladies service.

Those of us who serve/d generally see it as a privilege to do our bit for 'Queen and Country'. The government did their job and we did ours. We did after all serve the elected government, put in office by the british people. There is this tradition in the USA where people are thanked for their service....we generally do not see it that way. We chose to serve! When I signed on the dotted line and took the oath to serve HM, I meant it. I am now disabled, as a result of a stray mine under my truck whilst on ops (somewhere). But I chose to serve, i took the risks knowingly and willingly, its part of one's duty! So I get on with life as best I can and look back on the whole fondly, although what one experiences does change one for ever, for good and for bad! God Save the Queen!

When I left the RAF apprentice school, one of us was posted to Hack Green and we tried to find where it was. We were told in no uncertain terms that we were to stop. The Man posted there received a railway warrant to Crewe. He was then met at the station and driven by a round about route to 'The Hole' . Years later I was visiting my sister in Crewe. Not far from her house was a Big sign with arrow "Secret Bunker now open" It was originally a rotor air defense center but then became a regional seat of government. All the Holes were basically the same 50 feet underground. One in Devon, when they tried to excavate they hit granite and gave up, they built the standard hole in what they had, leaving most of it above ground, it was known as "the Hole In the Sky" There was also one near Newcastle that instead of going down they dug into the side of a hill the entrance guardroom was carefully disguised as a farm cottage, the 50 space carpark may have given it away??

This isnt the only bunker that is now obsolete and has been opened as a public museum. Hack Green, Kelvedon Hatch and the Scottish bunker just north of Edinburgh are also declassified. There are also a whole bunch of ROC OP bunkers dotted around the UK that are no longer in use and quite a few of the semi-sunken Chain Low Radar bunkers.. All of which are obsolete.

As long as you kept the bunker completely sealed and everything worked perfectly until you run out of fuel or food. If you got a couple decent rain storms it would wash some of the radiation away too. You can bet they had teams and gear stationed in places they didn’t think would be targeted to come in and pick up the VIP out the bunkers after a attack and get them to some UN Bunker.

If it rained after the Nuclear attack, it would become radiated rain and serve no purpose whatsoever other than to distribute radioactivity further afield. Secondly, this was a working bunker and wouldn’t have housed VIPs. This is just to clarify what would happen as per my training in the Royal Observer Corps. These bunkers were to collate data for the Home office and General Staff.

@@JamesAlexander14 not necessarily. rain systems can form 100s of km out to sea of upwind of a nuclear attack. nothing guarantees that the rain would be contaminated.

I was born toward the end of the Cold War so I never experienced it as an adult, but I like to wonder if the UKs apparent lack of provision of shelters for the general public might've been grounded in the knowledge that it takes quite a bit more than a nuclear attack/fallout to stop many Britons from doing whatever needs to be done?... ☢⚒😇

Standing behind a perspex screen writing backwards? That's a human cathode ray tube! In the era of big screen computer displays I wonder if this is a lost art? If so, it'll have to be a skill that's reinstated as modern computer equipment won't operate in a nuclear environment.

Ultimately it is an exercise in propaganda. Don't get me wrong, every armed force has to utilize propaganda. If they are showing you this really complex bunker, then what must they have that is secret? Plus as another commenter put it, to recognize the bravery of these people. People willing to be buried alive in a nuclear graveyard, yet no one knew who they were.

It’s interesting that these ladies received only a THIRD of what their male colleagues were paid and received no pension (unfair and outrageous), yet they were happy in their work. European women enjoy equal rights today and in some areas (in some countries) even extra privileges, but are more unhappy than all their predecessors. Go figure.
