Quick little tech tip: put some grease on the shift rail ball's and if it pop's out the grease will catch it and you won't have to fish it out of the bottom of the tranny. Thanks for the video Jason!!! Keep Rocking it out!!!

excellent tutorial. I just find it fascinating watching the tear down and rebuild with all of the points made for a good reassembly. Transmissions have always intrigued me in how the gears work. On top of that, the engineering simplicity and strength is amazing. thanks for taking the time and effort to do this video.

Very nice footage. The close ups were really clear and descriptive. Im looking foreward to the steering box part. I rebuilt one years ago and couldnt get the timing corect. Ended up taking it to the dealer & they got me fixed rite up, lol.

31 Ford Thank you sir I appreciate the comments! I always try to give as much detail as possible without getting too boring and long. I'm not the worlds best teacher but I try to imagine someone who is working on one thats never done it before. Ahh yes the dreaded steering! ! LOL Well I do it my own way not by the book. I think it's easier but it takes a few steps BEFORE you even take it apart. Stay tuned. .

Thank for the video it was a big help ! I found a trick that worked sweet, take a small stick magnet and stick the ball bearing onto it and insert through the shift rail hole into position , press down with a small flat botton punch while tapping the rod through. Never drop one bearing ! Hope this helps

Very nicely done! That's pretty cool how that trans all comes together. I did a reseal on the hydraulics of the 5610 and made some videos of it but they're nowhere as good and in depth as yours are. Cant wait for part 3!

Jason1Pa I think you explain it very well! I'd rather it be more in depth then someone pointing a camera at something and saying nothing ya know. Even though I dont have an N series Ford it still help to learn it incase someone comes to me with one to fix.

I have some old bread loaf pans that I put motor oil in and set over an old electric hot plate. I bring the oil up to about 350 and then put the bearings in the oil. Usually 5 to 10 minutes is enough to heat the bearings to fit easily over the shafts. Great way to heat them and pre lube them smiles

@@Jason1Pa Can you answer a quick question about my '49 8N? I think my hydraulic exhaust valve is stuck. Can I reach it through the side covers, and maybe free it by hand? Thanks again.
@Jason1Pa
@Jason1Pa 5 жыл бұрын
@@djastram You'd be able to reach it and move it however not sure if you'd free it up permanently. Chances are there is a lot of thick heavy dirt/junk down around it. Only sure way is to drop the pump and clean it very VERY good inside and out. You would be surprised the amount of gunk that will develop around the pump.

i love this video . good job. are you sure about the oil seal direction in the input shaft housing? just given the construction of the seal , the lip should have been facing the transmission therefore keeping any oil from transmission housing away from the clutch. right?
@Jason1Pa

I went back and looked to make sure I didn't goof. No it's correct. You always want to keep the open side with the spring facing the oil. Thanks for watching!

Great video awesome glad to see someone putting out this kind of of content my question is would you happen to have all of the bearing part numbers and seal part numbers and where were they purchased at I can't find no literature regarding this For everywhere I look says the parts Are discontinued
@Jason1Pa
@Jason1Pa Жыл бұрын
Everything you see related to all my Ford videos were purchased at either Just8ns.com or Dennis Carpenter. You can buy everything you need nothing is discontinued. I don't have each individual part number,but it you go on their sites you can find it either by looking or if you have the original part numbers out of the manual you can look them up as well.

Very good explanation and video. I noticed that you lubed the oil seals but not the bearings after heating them up or did you do it off camera? Do the bearings need lube during reassembly?
@Jason1Pa
@Jason1Pa 7 жыл бұрын
jerryf609 Thanks for watching! Yes I put some motor oil on them. Even the little bit of heat that it took wasn't enough to burn the oil off that already on them. Plus all but two of the bears would be submerged in oil as soon as you add the trans/hydraulic fluid to it.

This is a great explanation video. Are the shafts the same splines on top , and bottom? I'm wanting to make an over under drive transmission. If the shafts are the same splines I can swap the gears to get the overdrive.

Very well done video and explanations. Clear and concise. No i have a question perhaps someone could answer. The small bearing referred to @ 1:08 simply slips onto the shaft. Does that also hold true for the 8N?

I have just rebuilt an 1950 8n box and mine was a tight fit and a smaller bearing size than the 9n I bought a rebuild kit from fixthatford and the bearing was bigger to suit the 9n I then had to order a smaller size to fit my 8n shaft A friend of mine has built a few 9n's and reckons their a different size

To heat cone bearings, place besring on a plate or brick and use torch in the middle to evenly heat the inner race.
@Jason1Pa
@Jason1Pa Жыл бұрын
No need. Just needs a touch of heat to expand ever so slightly. Doesn't matter if it is heated evenly or not. Not like it will distort the bearing.

So I see in your video the gears just slide off after you removed the bearings. Will the gears slide off on the main and second shaft of my 53NAA? I’ve got to replace the main 2nd & 4th. Plus the counter2nd & 4th. Is it possible to take off the bearing sleeves without damaging them? I’ve got a bearing puller kit, along with the driver one as well.

This may not be unique to the 8n but the pilot bearing on the main shaft instead of being a sliding fit like on your 2n was a press fit .The shaft did not apear damage in any way and the old bearing is the same part number as the provided bearing in the kit.is this possible?

Isn't that gasket paper going to compress over time?
@Jason1Pa
@Jason1Pa 7 жыл бұрын
UnitCrane514 The one paper shim I ended up using was very thin.Not much cushion if any. With the little bit of drag or tightness the bearings were set at will allow allow a little bit of compression if it were to happen but unlikely it will. Now I would be a little hesitant using several paper shims although I know people that do and compression has never been a issue. Also keep in mind that the shims available for the axles on these Fords are paper. Can no longer get metal unlesss you would make your own. Main thing is it's better to have them a hair loose then a hair to tight. Thanks for watching!

Where are you located? How much would you charge to rebuild a ford n2 like this?
@Jason1Pa

Jose Farias Im about 35 miles east of Pittsburgh. I generally don't work on tractors for people. There is a lot of work that takes place (especially cleaning) and to charge for labor that would make it worth my while plus the parts alone would scare most away.
