Little mechanical adventure vlog on this free Ford Aerostar I picked up in Philly. Will It Run and SHOULD it be saved?
*EDIT: I was told it was a 1997, but you guys pointed out in the comments that its probably more like an '89 to '92. For several reasons like the like of airbags and sealed beam headlights. THANKS! I probably should have just checked the 10th digit on VIN.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING!

Back around 2003 I loaned a guy $250. He never could come up with the money to pay me back so eventually he offered me a 1988 Aerostar which I took. I cleaned it up and got it running. Ran great for years. I then gave it to my daughter in 2008. She and her boyfriend pulled out the 2nd and 3rd row seats and made it into sort of a hippy camper and they traveled the east coast from Miami to Virginia hitting all the best surfing spots. When they finished their adventure she sold it for $500. And it still ran fine.

My brother bought one with the 4.0 automatic with dual air and it was a solid $1500 investment probably 15 years ago. Drove that van everywhere and got 20 mpg. A shame nobody saw the value especially with the minimal amount of rust on the frame. I owned a1996 Taurus with the 3.0 and it ran flawlessly. Brings back many fond memories.

Aluminum driveshaft was a common swap into the fox body mustang. Also, the vans that had the 8.8 rear end came with a Detroit locker. Also a huge upgrade to the mustangs. Used to be great junkyard finds 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 good video as always Chris

Haha. Those engines were bulletproof tho. Much better than the one year only 2.8l the Aerostar debuted with. Funny thing about the 3.0l Vulcan in the Aerostar was that it was the only platform Ford used it in a RWD (longitudinal) configuration. So it's accessories, brackets, mounts, etc were unique to Aerostar only.

I had the pleasure of driving a 1987 Aerostar to deliver lost luggage for Northwest Airlines. It was brand new and fully loaded. I loved the cruise, air, tilt & lumbar support. The transportation company was in the airport, and I also got to drive a loaded custom 15 passenger van, a Seville, Lincoln Town Car, 2 54" stretched Cadillac limo's & a Chrysler Mini stretched limo.

FYI this isn't a '97. By '97, the Aerostar had a different grille and composite headlights with replaceable bulbs instead of sealed-beams, and there was a newer, more rounded dashboard with a driver-side airbag. All of those changes took effect for 1992. This would be from between 1989 and 1991 -- extended length but older dashboard. Ford was going to replace it with the Windstar, but it stuck around for two more years due to popular demand. It was discontinued after 1997 because of new safety standards that would have cost more than Ford wanted to spend.

Back in the ‘80’s my friend and I each had ‘88 mustangs that we would take SCCA racing on sundays. We would prep them at home, switching to sticky BFG R1 compound tires, and adjusting camber and toe, then load them on our trailers. I towed with a lowered ‘’86 Chevy crew cab dually, but he towed with his speed shop’s delivery Ford Aerostar. I was getting around 9 mpg while he was doing just fine and getting around 14. Bought a '97 Aerostar, 4 liter, all wheel drive for 200 dollars from a guy that does custom work for us on our farm. That was back in 2011. All 4 springs were snapped 😳. It was also the extended version with the aluminum driveshaft. I replaced the back 2 springs with new ones from the auto parts store. New ones for the front are unavailable. Nearly impossible to find used unbroken also. Finally found a pair at a local yard. Used this van for nearly 4 years and drove it literally every day. Had a trailer hitch and hauled 2 round bales at a time from 12 miles away until all 102 bales were hauled. Hauled barn lime and always a full load. Hit a pothole with my normal full load and whole body bent in the middle as the thing was so fricking rotten. Transmission literally pulled out of the rotten frame so much that the fan pushed into the radiator and wouldn't turn. Sold it to a scrapper for 400 dollars. 😊😊

I personally have absolutely NO desire to fool with another Aerostar EVER again. My dad had 3 of them *at the SAME time* and I was the one tasked with the repairs and maintenance of them. He had two 1989s and one 1993. The 3.0L V6 engines ran like a top, but the automatic transmissions (2WD A4LD for the 3.0L) were all *hot garbage* in these Aerostars. I had to replace the transmission in my dad's 1993 van no less than *three* times. The one in this video was *NOT* a 1997, but more like a 1989 to 1991. The later Aerostars had the blue oval in the top groove of the grille, not the center like on the one featured here. In 1986, the standard engine was not the 3.0L V6, but the old "Pinto" 2.3L inline 4 cylinder. That 4 cylinder in an Aerostar made it take a *very* long time to get going to the point of moving faster than molasses would pour of of the jar in the dead of winter in Fargo, ND, if said jar were left outside for a week.

As read from a 1993 Readers Digest I found in a Dusty corner of a abandoned part of the plant in which I work at. "Aerostar can haul six kids to school in the morning and turn around and tow a two-ton boat to the lake at night. It's also capable of providing for the comfort and safety of its occupants on a full-time basis. New this year are optional integrated child safety seats that actually incorporate a 5 point belt system. There's a driver side air bag to supplement lap and shoulder restraints. Every outer seat has a 3-point safety harness. Rear anti-lock brakes also come standard. And electronic "full-time" four wheel drive is available. What's more, Aerostar offers you a host of amenities in a comfortable interior with available leather seating surfaces. Aerostar from Ford. Designed for your comfort.....and peace of mind."

I got my first happy customer fixing an Aerostar when I was enrolled at Germanna Community College’s Automotive Trade School program. There was a construction trade school that was behind the shop where I had my classes and they wanted to use the class-provided Aerostar as a tool carrier to help with servicing and repair their construction vehicles, provided that we could get it running. After diagnosis of the fuel system, I had to drain the stale gasoline from the fuel tank, then replace the fuel pump and fuel level sender assembly, which was all gummed up. Once my instructor and I put the car back together and put some fresh gas in it, it started right up.

I love aerostars. My mother had a 90 when I was growing up. I remember taking 9 hour trips to see my family from Virginia Beach to brick NJ in the back. I remember sleeping on the trip because the seats went down into a bed. And some how Toto Africa is the song that sticks out as what always seemed to be on the radio.

Best van I have ever had Drove it from Ohio to Florida hauling a 47 De Soto U-Haul trailer also the van was full of antiques. It went through the mountains and all the way down to Florida without a problem. Great van.

I love NNKH. I am sorry it didn't work out for the Aerostar to live. Like you, I never thought they were as good looking as the Astro/Safari. Still, when you showed us the underside, that was a truck underneath! I had thought those were more car based. I would consider one of these in the future if one came my way. I do love watching you work. Thanks Chris!

I had one of those 4.0L all wheel drive Aerostars, and it was an awesome beast. I was living in Montreal, Quebec back in the 90s, and the city there had good snow cleaning...but only on the main streets. The side streets they would just plow the middle of the street, and leave banks on either side that you have to plow through or climb over to park. I lived around the corner of a short dead-end street that never got plowed. So I made great use of my AWD, and thus always had a parking spot all winter. The only time I was stuck with that van was the one time I hesitated going through a 3 foot high snow bank. If there hadn't been ice under it, I would have been OK. The only gripe I had about it is that to do a tune-up on it, the 4.0L barely fit, and it took a long time to change the spark plugs on it. The dealer wanted to charge me over $600 (1990s dollars!) to do the tune-up because of that, but my mechanic only charged me $200, as we put the most expensive plugs we could find so I would never have to replace the sparkplugs again. It did last me until the body started to fall apart, and off to the scrap yard it went. I was sad to see it go...

My parents bought a 95 Ford Aero Star. I had to pass my Drivers Test in it. Rule was, if you want to drive their vehicle, pass the test in it. Wow, good video as usual.

I love this channel. I don't mind if the car doesn't sell, I just love seeing them brought back to life. Yes it's more interesting if you have to MacGyver them back to life with a paperclip and some bubble gum, but a win is a win. Amazing nighttime aerial shot of the city, I usually hope for the hot blonde at the end of your videos, but Gus and Turbo are fun to watch as an outro. You and Jen are both amazing, keep on keep'n on!

We had an '86 aerostar with that digital dash. I was 10 when we got it and thought it was the coolest van. I'm now 46 and still think they are great looking vans.

I remember those vans well. As a kid growing up in the 80s suburbia, they were plentiful and looked like great vans. Really appreciate the cinematic content and drone footage. The chilly northeast is polar opposite of what we have here in So. Cal and is fun to watch. Really, really great video man. Thank you so much!!

This broke my heart. I owned two Extended Aerostar's back when my kids were growing up. I bought a 90' in 91' and then a 96' in 2000. They both suffered from the same issue. The auto trans had a cooling issue and would overheat and blowout the fluid. Great family hauler but once the kids grew up, we upgraded to Explorer's.

I owned a trucking company and we also did small package delivery . In the small package delivery we decided to purchase 4 Chevy Astros , 2 Dodge Caravans and 4 Ford Aerostars , after 3 years both Dodges were just plain wore out ( we expected this ) . The Chevys lasted a couple more years but we couldn't keep spending money on them after they hit around 300,000 miles . The Fords on the other hand , (one was totaled in an accident ) the other three lasted well into the 600,000 mile mark and ran so well even then that employees were allowed to buy them from us for $200 each . Ford knew after just a few years how well these vans performed and decided to stop production because they were just too good . After that we went with the Ford full size vans , they also lasted well over 500,000 miles and were good vans until the Triton engine was introduced , we had nothing but problems after that . I am retired now but in my opinion The Ford Aerostar was the best van ever produced as far as reliability .

I had one of these. I towed a travel trailer with it. Great VAN. Someone shot at us while driving a long trip. Put a hole next to the tail lights. Just a random shooting. Looked like it was a 22CAL. I guess we got lucky. Great Job Chris.

Many years ago I bought one of those minivans for $65 lol he put a new starter on it he just wanted his money back. I loaded it up going from Nebraska to California and the transmission went out in Utah. Ended up getting a U-Haul van and we just put the whole van in back of the U-Haul.. Ended up scrapping it and use it for deposit on a new place.. That was an awesome van though honestly

I have such good memories of a 1992(?) aerostar and going from Maryland to colorado and back for a family road trip. I even had my first drive on public roads(illegally) out in the country when i was 13-14. I cried when we got rid of that van but they just aren't valuable and the rust/head gasket made it just about worthless. I got a Ranger as a first daily and loved driving it and now i look all over the place for any aerostar with a manual!

I haven't quite finished the video, but this appears to me to be a pre-1992 facelift model. In 1992 they came with the airbag steering wheel and more rounded dash than the 1986-1991. Also the automatic trans selector was moved from the floor to the steering column on the later models. These things were very overbuilt to be just a people carrier. The Ranger chassis was great to make a small work van with the seats removed. Glad you were able to show it to us. I haven't seen one since the early 2000s when we traded in out 1993 model. Lots of memories!

Hello Chris. I’ve been subscribed to your channel for a long time, today I saw an episode with Aerostar. It's a pity that Aerostar went into details. I live in Russia, and six months ago I became the owner of the same Aerostar with a 3.0 engine and rear-wheel drive and an automatic transmission. It cost me a ridiculous $750. I fixed the brakes, installed a radiator on the automatic transmission, and added a third brake light. It starts without problems, runs quickly, and does not cause any trouble. An excellent car for a family living in a private house.

Years ago, I replaced the 4.0 in an AWD Aerostar with a rebuilt unit. What a job! We put it on a lift, put 2 55 gallon drums under the front subframe, unbolted that whole subframe assembly, and lifted the van back up, swapping the engine under the van in the air. It was owned by a pilot, and he used it to trailer his airplane around. He loved that thing, said it towed pretty well (that aircraft and trailer wasn't very heavy I don't think), and with the AWD he could go and tow it just about anywhere. Nice try saving this one, but can't save 'em all! Take care bro, and keep the killer content coming!
