The 1960 Ford looked all-new with twin headlights riding in a scalloped-square front clip. The Fairlane was now the base model in the full-sized lineup, along with the Fairlane 500, Galaxie and range-topping Starliner.
The Station Wagon Series continued with Ranch Wagon, Country Sedan and Country Squire models. The elegant Starliner 2-door hardtop was Ford's choice for NASCAR racing. The 1960 fullsize Fords abandoned the ostentatious ornamentation of the 1950s for a futuristic, sleek look.
Round taillights were replaced by half-moon shaped taillights for 1960 only. There were tailfins still, but smaller ones - the focus of Ford's stylists abandoning, as did the rest of the industry, the aviation influences of the previous decade and instead capturing the new obsession - the Space Race.
The Galaxie name was particularly appealing to this trend, it seems. Windshield wipers were extended to cover more of the windshield. Ford also introduced the center rear fuel door lid. Engines offered for 1960 were the 223 cubic inch six and 292 & 352 V8s.
With the change in dimensions from 1959, the New York Times described the 1960 full-size Ford as the "longest, lowest, and widest in the fifty-six year history of the Ford Motor Company." The car ran afoul of regulations in many states, where vehicles wider than eighty inches were typically trucks, which had lighting requirements not mandated for passenger cars.
Another famous car from 1960 is the Ford Thunderbird. Previous models of the Thunderbird failed in the late 1950s due to the price and being marketed as a sports car. This car did not live up to the hype of being marketed on performance which turned off many potential buyers.
However, the 1960 Thunderbird incorporated different features that previous versions did not have. This version had four seats instead of two, making it marketable to families who needed to get around. Ford’s chief body engineer Henry Grebe created a new layout for the car, making it low profile and light, making it attractive to both performance enthusiasts and people with families.

We got a '60 Ford Starliner in Yosemite Yellow. Brought it home on 12.24.1959. Of all the Fords my dad had (ranging from Falcon to Thunderbird), it was my favorite Ford. Spec wise, it had the 352 cid 2 bbl @ 235hp hooked up to a 3 speed Cruise-O-Matic. To this 8 year old, the 1960 Starliner was light years ahead in styling that year!

There was such a dramatic change from the 1959 styling to 1960. My dad a had 59 Fairlane 500 and then a 1960 Galaxie for company cars. Boy, what a difference. I was 11 and 12 and was amazed that there could be so much difference in one year. Even the seldom seen Edsel was cool for 1960, though as ever it was was just a modified Ford. If you have never seen a 1960 Edsel check Google. Too bad in those years the advertising agencies only though the ads should have white, middle and upper-class folks. Many of Ford's customers were/are none of that demographic. Thanks for posting. A historical document in many ways. A fully optioned Galaxie wagon was about $3000 MSRP in 1960. $99 down and $99 a month and this family hauler could be yours.👍

@@nephi5059 Those guys looked like a bunch of dopes crunched into that country squire. They should have showed that chick jump into the back area to increase sales. I had a '57 Ford Fairlane 500 Convertible in high school (1962-1966)and for winter I had a '57 Ford Station Wagon. That back area was for recreation. I think dad knew because I had a couple pillows and a musty old sleeping bag. The only way to start that car was to touch two wires together that dad had put on the steering wheel column. One night he and I took a big load of laundry in to Houlton. On the way back dad and I wanted to "talk" so we took a old road out in New Limerick. I was driving and be damned if I didn't stall it right on the railroad tracks. And of course, there was a B&M train loaded with potato's heading south. I could see the headlight on the lead diesel. There were always 6 on that night train headed for New York City. I fumbled around trying to connect those wires. I did it and moved off the tracks. That train was moving full boar and passes only seconds after I cleared the tracks. Dad only had one thought. "If we got hit there would be laundry scattered all the way from New Limerick Crossing to the town of Oakfield." Gosh I miss my dad. He was a great man.

5:51. Look closely at the two outside passengers in the third seat. Their legs are pushed toward the center of the car because the wheel wells take up that space. The result is they have to lean toward the outside of the car. Ford claimed it was a 9-passenger wagon, but it was really 8. As a matter of fact, Ford eventually relented coming out with a slogan that the Ford wagon "Seats 8 or half a ton of freight."

Why the '60 Ford became one of the most maligned and ridiculed design themes of the fins & chrome era is simply beyond me. It was a very sleek, elegant, modern looking machine, slim and trim with well-resolved lines and details and beautifully sculptured surfaces. The front was fresh and simple and that rear end was a creative masterpiece! Ford was clearly striving for something as bold and distinctive as Chevy's dramatic batwing motif without looking like a copy and I think they succeeded. The wagons in particular had a handsome and well-proportioned roofline that worked perfectly with the lower body theme. Only that much-touted "Thunderbird-inspired" roof of the Galaxie was a bit of a head scratcher to me. Sure, it was a commercial success because it's the old marketing trick of letting some of that high-priced Thunderbird "glamor" rub off on a lesser vehicle line, but it just wasn't as nicely proportioned or as harmonious with the rest of the car as the basic Fairlane roof style with its large, curved back window. The 1960 Edsel hardtop used the Fairlane roof stampings and rear window. It looked much sleeker and befitted those futuristic lower body lines much better than the Galaxie roof. It's a bummer the interiors were so frumpy. Even on the Galaxie the steering column and shifter tube were exposed and the trim was nowhere as playful or rich looking as on the competition.

The full-size 1960 Ford was controversial when new but is considered one of Ford's smoothest designs. Sales were strong at around 1.5 million units for the boxy 1959 Fords...dropping to around 900,000 units for 1960. Some of the drop in popularity was due to the new and smaller Ford Falcon. Full-size Chevrolets maintained their popularity in 1960 and now handily outsold the big Fords. Drivetrains were carried over from 1959, but the big Ford was now a couple of inches longer than the big Chevrolet and a full 81.5 inches wide (violating highway safety standards which restricted passenger car width to 80.0 inches). Wagons for 1960 had the unique flip up liftgate (one year only design and repurposed years later for the Dodge Deora concept car). The 1961 full-size Ford had toned down styling with reduced width and length. Sales of the big Ford fell back significantly from the full-size Chevrolet for the rest of the 1960s. However, Ford was first to introduce an intermediate-size car (1962 Fairlane) and sporty car (1965 Mustang). I had a turquoise 1960 Ford Fairlane Tudor many years ago.

That 1960 Country Sedan was a beautiful wagon. It's very interesting that they are saying in the ad for the 1960 Galaxy that it is " inspired" by the Thunderbird when clearly it is the 1961 Thunderbird that shares the similarity, and not the 1960 model Thunderbird at all .

My mother had a 1960 Ford Fairlane 500. The absolute worst piece of junk ever. How I wish she had bought a '60 Chevy. GM cars were light years ahead of Ford back then. I got a ride in my grandparents' '59 Impala and all I could think was, "Wow, this thing rides like a dream!"

BUT, THE 60 Ford was much safer. The Chevy (and the Mercedes) had an X member frame that lacked side rails.

The 57 thru 59s we're better looking. The 60s we're so bloated big they were illegal and to avoid actions Ford had to downsize them slitely for 61 which I think was a homely misproportioned car.

They were very reliable. Quit the Japanese propaganda. Our cars were the envy of the world, as they had horrible little motorized shoe boxes with a sewing machine for an engine. THEY were the ones that were done a 60,000 miles. Our cars could, even with the junk oil of the day, exceed 100,000 miles IF you changed the oil regularly and ordered the car with an oil filter. Many people, just like now, didn't.
