In 1964, a Cortina Lotus leading around a bend with its inside front wheel in fresh air became a familiar sight, as the cars were set up with soft rear suspension and a hard front end. Jim Clark won the British Saloon Car Championship easily, in the USA, Jackie Stewart and Mike Beckwith won the Malboro 12-hour, and Alan Mann Racing also performed well in the European Touring Car Challenge, including a 1-2 victory in the 'Motor' Six Hour International Touring Car Race at Brands Hatch. A Boreham-built car also won its class, came 4th outright, and won the handicap section, in the 4000 mile 10-day Tour de France. Other Cortina Lotus achievements included the Austrian Saloon Car Championship, the South African National Saloon Championship, the Swedish Ice Championship, and the Wills Six-Hour in New Zealand.

I owned a 1965 Cortina in 1967 -- bought in Sweden and sold to a guy in Wisconsin going to Texas for $450. Bloody great car!

I used to own that 1964 Swedish ice championship Lotus Cortina some 20 years ago, and raced it in the Swedish historic racing series. It was super fun to drive and I miss it!

JIM CLARK - By far the greatest driver ever - no doubt. He is and was "The Best of the Best" (Fangio and Senna about Clark). No other driver in history until today was so superior as Clark - No other driver as so much "Grand Slam" - Pole/Win/Fastest Lap/Leading every lap of the race - like him. And all that from just 72 starts... ! This man is the Olymp of driving - the Michelangelo of racing - a dynamic art at the highest level. So smooth, so precise, so fast....simply out of this world. One, who won in Spa by 5 minutes (!) in monsoon rain with only one hand at the wheel (!) because of gearbox trouble...One, who takes back a complete lap (!) in Monza and back into the lead... One, who took pole on the original 22,8 km Nürburgring track by 9 (!) seconds and more....One who won Indy by 2 whole (!) laps...For eternity and by lightyears unmatched in the sport. That`s just four examples of his mesmeric unique genius... 3

While not mentioned above the Cortinas were a roaring success in the first three Bathurst Armstrong 500 mile races at the magnificent Mount Panorama circuit in New south Wales, Australia. When moved to Bathurst from Phillip Island, Victoria the marque won the 63, 64 and 65 events. The latter was a GT500 variant with some of the Lotus tweaks.

On the limit, one wheel in the air, power sliding, counter-steer........flat out, Jim Clark P.S. Inspector Morse did a lot of racing in those days

Jim Clark was an absolute master of power slides. I saw him doing them in practice in the Lotus 49. Lap after lap.

I just don't know how the brakes of cars in that era survived any race. I've driven Mk 1, Mk 2 Cortinas (ordinary, GT, 1600E and Lotus versions). After 15 minutes of hard driving on British roads, the brakes were shot - how did they last for 3 hours round a racetrack?

Great video! I wonder, what kind of car is the red racer at 14.07? It's a pretty fast car. 14.25 in twelfth position, if I see it right. From behind it looks like an Abarth Zagato. By the way, the onboard camera vid (15.11) is awesome!

Jimmy Clark was a phenomenon, he could drive, and be on the pace, with anything that had four wheels, and don't forget he was also driving in the formula one world championship plus the European F2 championship and the Indi 500 and in the winter he went down under and raced in the Tasman championship. He would also try his hand at rallying in which he finished second in the RAC rally, can you ever believe that we will see his like again? The one story that sums him up is told by his Lotus F1 mechanic about testing with the F1 car and they said he was the worst driver to conduct testing with and when the interviewer asked him why he gave two reasons 1. He hated testing in the preseason, and secondly and more importantly they could never get meaningful data, the reason for this was no matter what way they set up the car Jimmy was always well under a second in difference of the lap time, and they even set the car up with knowingly worse settings ie. Too much understeer or snap oversteerand and no matter what they did when Clark went out with the badly set up car on the second lap after the change in the set up Jimmy was lapping at almost the same lap time as when they set up the car perfectly and none of the other Lotus F1 drivers could do this. He was also known to win races with a broken car. I said phenomenal and will stick by that statement, after all I don't think that Fangio ever said of another driver that he was the best he had ever seen by a long way!

Did Clark’s factory Cortina look like modern period saloon racers with bare interior, one seat and full roll cage?

In 1964 when this film dates from the British Saloon Car Championship was run to Group 2 regulations which were relatively restrictive in what mods you could make to the car. Looking at photos from the time the car still had a full quota of seats, and no sign of a roll bar. In 1966 that changed with Group 5 regs. being applied. These were a lot more liberal.

@@leach1527 Sounds like what former E-Prod champ Joe Cogbill told me SCCA did in 1972 after which about anything went.

The change to Group 5 in the UK made the cars more sophisticated but at the same time increased the costs of running a car and making it competitive. In 1966 no other cars could get anywhere near the works Cortinas in their class, and in 1967 only Vic Elford's Porsche 911 could stay with them. @@jockellis
