We used to pull the module down out of the pickup and use a test light to positive battery between the farthest 2 terminals(?) from the module connector to simulate a pickup signal into the module. This was back when scopes were the size of the car and pushing vehicles in and out all day was money lost. But once in a while it would revive a dead module and you would have tested everything prior to that to know that's what happened. This method also worked well on GM distributor systems. These fundamentals have to be understood before stepping into the world of distributorless ignition systems. Thanks Paul for getting back to the basics.

This is very valuable video indeed! It covers literally the topic what does electric spark produce? Any circuit which features coil of high inductance 1 Henry or more, while circuit is closed accommodates energy of magnetic field, thus once the circuit gets open the accomodated energy produces huge peak of high voltage potential on the spark gap which breaks down in the form of discharge arc igniting the air fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber of the engine. On the obsolete cars inside the distributor body was the small mechanical switch dedicated to open the primary circuit of ignition coil. Each time the contact was opened it was the wave of the 50-70 volts on the primary circuit which induced up to 18000 volts on the spark plug. After some time the mechanical switch on the distributor was phased out in favor of high voltage transistor capable withstand high voltage applied between emmiter-collector junction. To actuate the transistor closed-opened state the crank sensor is needed which biases the junction of the transistor to open or close upon the position of the crankshaft. The Hall sensor effect essential is that on the thin plate of the semiconductor each time exposed to the proximity of crankshaft marker magnet some relatively small amplitude electric signal is induced which is utilized to actuate the high voltage transistor to interrupt the circuit of the primary winding of ignition coil eg produce spark on the plug! The hall sensor is just convenient and compact staff to sense the position of the crankshaft and command the electronic ignition system to produce the spark upon its designated position! As to how to distinguish electric and magnetic field, electric field is present when some voltage is applied but no current flows along the wire. As the circuit gets closed, electric current commences to flow it produces magnetic field which is estimated upon the impact mechanical force applied on the wire. Like everything in electricity we cannot discern electrons and electric and magnetic fields, though we can estimate them upon the impact they make onto adjacent objects.

Good teaching. I've been doing diag for around 20 years, and all the new guys that I deal with I make sure they have a good understanding of the fundamentals or the mindless work - so the troubleshooting makes more sense. An old timer taught me many years ago - You gotta be smarter than what you're working with.

When i put the new Switch on I did it as instructed the gear shift was in neutral and the switch was set to neutral. I'm going to run this Tahoe all day off and on and see what happens for the most part this 02 Chevy is a tank it'll just keep on running but this particular issue it's like Pittsburgh weather it's unpredictable.

You can still bump the starter on newer cars; you just have to do it manually at the starter relay. Also, to be fair: For cars that have the auto start push button-- I'm not sure how many of them even have a distributor anymore anyway-- if any at all. Most are coil on plug now- I would think.

It's common to ruin an old fuel pump by running it out of gas. Do some fuel pressure measurements to start with

I have a 2013 F150. After driving allowing the engine to reach operating temp, the truck would crank and not start. I was sure I could hear the fuel pump run with key on engine off. I checked coil 1 with the engine cold and it had a good spark. Same coil when engine was at operating temp the spark was random and week. I watched a KZfaq video that showed same problem. The tech in the video said to change fuse 26. Now I had checked my fuses, and fuse 26 passed. However, after removing fuse 26, I saw that the case around the fuse was damaged. I changed the fuse and fixed the problem.

I’ve verified fuel pressure, smoke tested, maf tested, o2’s are reading correctly. However, when I unplug the fpr vacuum line and block it the lean condition begins to correct. I’ve replace the regulator but the problem still persists. Any tips? I could definitely use them! Thank you.

If that is for sure a fpr and not a pulse dampner (I think the 4.2 engine were returnless fuel systems) when you disconnect the vacuum hose to it your are raising fuel psi by about 8psi so of course that's going to make the fuel trims correct.

When I put a jumper on my car & tested the alternator an explanation mark would just pop up, I don’t hear the fuel pump activating but there is fuel in the system as I had a few leaks putting in new fuel injectors so I’m not sure about that situation, only thing I notice is all the lights on the dash comes on & if I continuously try to start the car it will weaken or kill my battery and the lights will start flickering I’m guessing bc the alternator is not working properly.

the two wires on the ignition coil? They wouldn't be as my friend @northernpatriot9078 mentioned, but if you were using a powerprobe and were relying on the green and red LED lights to indicate power or ground, you can have misleading results if the ignition coil is missing it's power feed. Also, we wouldn't apply the terms "pull-up" and "pull-down" to output circuits like an ignition coil. These are terms we apply to inputs. Make sense? For outputs we use the terms power and ground side switching

I did what you told me to do and its insane how you know what to do on old cars without even seeing it ir hearing it. You sir, definitely put me in the right direction. With the egr disconnected that vacuum plugged it's improved. After following your directions i immediately noticed the brakes started functioning correctly, so much better! The main things now are difficult to describe. On a 100% time scale the car cranks, starts and runs very well 60% but 40% it will just immediately run terrible. During the good 60% it will crank over nicely, no weird compression spots and will also cut off fine. Example, two days I drove it completely for everything and it did well. Third morning cranks up fine but 10 minutes into the drive it becomes mildly staticy feeling then it start jackhammering the steering wheel with misfires and I mean rough. It pops loudly back through the carburetor in a weird rhythmic timing. I pull over and switch it off and have the key out but it lunges forward and then gives a few more hard jackhammer type skakes, weird trying to crawl forward, pops through the carburetor and finally shuts off. During this bad time when I go to crank it up it kicks backs, just grinds when turning the key similar to when you crank up an already cranked up car etc. It usually does the bad symptoms for a few hours, no more than 4 or 5 hours. Get it back home and it will start right up and run smoothly in the morning. So strange. Had 3 mechanics to check out timing because they said sounds like timing but it all checks out good. The last guy who is kinda a guru or the local guy changed harmonic balancer pulley because they can sometimes throw off your timing he said. Anyway I'm a young man growing his family so u can't afford to take it back to the mechanic to let them hold onto it until it messes up with them etc. I know it's a lot and I'm sorry. I an really thankful for any advice you might have for me man.
