and just for the record, shortening and staggering the flowmasters made a HUGE difference! (and i didn't think it would) my brother was 100% correct in that staggering the pipes even 6" would cancel out the drone and change the sound. the truck at idle sounded immediately different, tighter and crisper on rev, and no drone AT ALL on the freeway. great change to make and awesome improvement to my truck! thanks bro!

Hey there vintagespeed, I’m currently shortening a driveshaft for my 90 f150, I am wondering if you pounded the yoke all the way so it would butt up to the lip of the yoke or just to where you ground the weld off? Thank you!!
@vintagespeed
@vintagespeed 4 жыл бұрын
@@caseypastachak8891 yes, i cleaned up the tubing where i ground the weld off, cleaned up the yoke to the shoulder, beat the yoke back into the tube and welded 'er up. has held up fine so far, lots & lots of burnouts/donuts and today ran 'er over 100mph on the fwy again....it happens frequently...was doing some data logging. so far so good! thanks for the question.

Pretty close to how i do it . Pinchin it off only works if your taking a bunch off the tube . Typically your only takin a few inches off . Pinching doesnt work in that case ! Good tip on steel discoloring . I only use a cut off wheel . No grinding stone . Goin back tagether , , you use a square off the ears . And check square leg down yr drive shaft ! Just like a pipe flange on pipe ! That way you know that direction is perfect ! Now yr only referencing one direction rather than 2 directions ! Ive welded Up some funky shafts through 40 years . The nipple or flange insert helps line it all up n gets ya close ! Ive welded em up , one sides 2 foot and the other ends 4 foot . Then you just clamp your shaft in 2 pieces a angle . That lines up both directions at the same time . Actually easier ! But riskier if it breaks ! And the first shafts we did in the 70s . We didnt have a mig or stick welder . But we had a torch ! First 3 , 4 shafts we made were gas welded with a coat hanger for filler metal ! Ive never had one break ! Last one i made was after a drunk hit me . Brain bled for 17 months plus ! Front shaft on 77 3/4 ton chevy plow truck went out . Ive had alot a blazers i parted out . Took a rear shaft from a blazer . Shortened it up . Turned it into a front shaft fr the plow truck ! Ben 9 years now . No problems ! Good video brother ! Be safe !

Thanks for the video it was very helpful. One question, I noticed in the video is that your engine appears to be center and parallel to the frame rails and your rear end is offset to the passenger side of the truck. Is this how is from factory?
@vintagespeed
@vintagespeed 2 жыл бұрын
the motor is offset to the passenger side about an inch to clear the steering shaft/joints, the rear axle is centered. the 8.8 is offset pinion so the yoke is not exactly centered in the housing. thanks for watching and keeping me on my toes!

what is drone with the mufflers?
@deankay4434
@deankay4434 3 жыл бұрын
Bill, The mufflers vibrate as exhaust pulses pass thru. Each has their own harmonics and change at different engine speed and the muffled weight. Placing them at different lengths apart will mostly do the trick. But “Droning” is heard inside the vehicles cabin. Manufactures place weights on heavy gauge rods seen on several common locations if you spent a lot of time under different vehicles. A vibration or droning is high enough for the human ear to hear. Sometimes, the cabin becomes an amplifier. Each item in life has a frequency when vibrated at the right speed. The ones you can hear have to modified. Hope this helps! ASE Master Tech since 1978.

Dude, across the street at 3:44, I could see the neighbor lady with binoculars watching you playing your shaft. She appears confused when sparks were flying. Just be careful getting you mail after dark as days get shorter. I don't care for violence from a neighbor lady on a fellow Ford owners. Eyes in the back of your eye head buddy. Careful! @@vintagespeed I was just joking as it was funny how you started the video looking around to make sure we could talk! I did have gals in class at "UTI" nights but also in ACDelco tech seminars, some city in 7 states. I made the mistake of putting my name and company cell on the first PPT slide. Man I got calls. One shop owner called with no serial data on some newer GM, as he could not establish CAN serial data. I ask him if he had come to a Dubuque seminar as I covered 7 types of GM serial data and how to fix it. Yes, I was there, but this is so new it would be under warranty so I didn't pay attention. I asked for history and he told me he had a TECH-2 with CANdi module put the vehicle was towed from a body shop after hitting a deer. I said a 120 ohm terminating resistor on the two wire system, so pins 6 and 14 should measure 60 ohms. He to me he had zero and damage was on left fender. He called back 2 hrs later with news he had broken wire. Then, I will pay attention next time since deer collision is not warranty! Lol. I was with Delco the last 7 years.

Just take the shaft to a professional driveshaft shop. They will cut it with lathe, chamfer the ends for welding, precisely remove the weld so the yoke can be removed easily, new ones pressed in, welded and the shaft balanced. All this in about 35 to 40 minutes.
@vintagespeed
@vintagespeed 2 жыл бұрын

Lol! There's always a few people who project their feelings and perspective on everyone else, thinking they should think just like you do, and there's OBVIOUSLY something wrong with anyone who doesn't! If everyone just did things the standard way, there would be no such thing as custom builds and really, who would ever have anything to post on KZfaq? Lol! Not to mention that there are times when things don't go as planned, or you live in the middle of Montana, and the nearest driveshaft shop is 5+ hrs away round trip, etc etc..... Sharing knowledge is what we're here for. Sorry for the rant, but there is more to life than just being like everyone else.

@deankay4434
@deankay4434 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I would agree the the weld should but cut on a lathe with center supports. Dial indicator is recommended in 4-5 locations to achieve near perfect inline rotation. Plus, with the minimum removed, a TIG would best best. But I have seen many race cars on 1/4 mile track or late-model categories work fine balanced by two hose clamps, marks and alignment shims used as weight. Even factory shafts fail. ASE Master Tech since 1978.
@vintagespeed
@vintagespeed 2 жыл бұрын
sure, like i said in the vid, the best method is to take it to a driveline shop. this should be used as a 'temporary fix' type situation. that said though, i've put 4800 miles on my V10 (400+ foot pounds) little 415ci and she gets beat on every single time i drive it. lots of donuts and burnouts, many many many 1/4 mile runs and many 130+ mph freeway chases..... and ya know what?? so far not a single problem. thanks for watching!
@davidcatlin1970
@davidcatlin1970 Жыл бұрын
Wow! You know if he took two days to get it done, or the thing flew apart the first time he drove it, or it vibrated so badly he lost his dentures!! Lol! Haha! You guys are killing me! It's working! It's working! If you have half a brain and a tad bit of understanding, you can replicate his results pretty easily! If you're just learning, might want to rethink it! Personally I have brought driveshafts home after driving nearly 4 hrs round trip, and the jackass who "balanced" the driveshaft failed to notice it was running out by .125" PLUS!! AFTER I explained when bringing the shaft in that it was there because the rear yoke was broken from the previous owner turning up the radio, instead of replacing the ujoint! Resulting in a bent shaft! I could have done better MYSELF with an effing hacksaw, file and my mig welder! Would have been time AND money ahead as well! To top that off, I'm working on a driveshaft right now, that has miss matched size bearing cups on BOTH ENDS of the driveshaft I paid $350 for and wondered why the ubolts felt like it wouldn't tighten down like it should! So the "experts" ef up pretty bad sometimes! Oh the second story is a totally different shop as we were 500 miles from home when apparently something damaged the shaft on the highway, and the sucker twisted up like crazy, pulling a trailer up a goat path with an actual road name in West Virginia! Lol
