Great job on diagnostics. I’m a municipal fleet technician and this manifold runner control noise has affected a few of our vehicles. One was sent to the dealership (not by me) for a noise that I was told sounded exactly like valve train noise or possibly a rod knock. They ultimately said it needed a new engine. They even claimed that they cut open the oil filter and metal was found. I don’t believe that this was actually done. After replacement I was the person that picked it up from the dealer and immediately heard the noise and notified the service writer that got the tech to come out to look at it. He said that it was probably a lifter that needed to break in. I said that that’s not correct but called my boss who wanted me to bring it back to our facility anyway. I asked to take a look at it and found that the noise disappeared when I unplugged one of the runner control solenoids. I drove the vehicle back to the dealer and showed the service writer and tech and they acted like they’d never seen that before. They ended up keeping it for a while. It’s getting bad that dealerships seem to be increasingly bad at diagnostics, at least on certain things.

Great video, thank you! My 2020 F150 has the same issue, truck is still under warranty and ford says there is nothing wrong, it’s just a noisy engine and just accept or deal with the noise. Can’t wait to go back and watch the service manager view this diagnosis ….spot on 👍

Thanks OC that was very educational. I have the same problem with my 2019 F150 with 30k on it. It seems like it's getting worse buy the day. Right at 1500 RPM it rattles like a metal on metal. Been getting the run around for a while, need new engine, need new bell housing, need a new trans, need a new front shock, and so on. Heck, by then I'll just get a new truck. Ford should have fixed this problem under warrantee. Great work on finding the mystery rattle.

I love my LS engines. None of these things happen to them. Chevy all the way. I’ve tried fords, and just can’t get past their high dollar parts, lack of reliability. But am grateful for mechanics like you. Good work man.

Awesome video, great information for someone who does not know. I have a 2016 F150 FX4, Five ohhh. It was easier for me to diagnose because one of those rods for the runner was broken, and it just threw a code. No scary sounds in my case. I would have been scared shitless, if I heard those noises coming from my engine.

I want to thank you for this video. I just bought a 2018 5.0 f150 from Manheim for $8500 4x4 SuperCrew with 150K miles. They sold it as-is due to a nasty "ticking" noise. No check engine light, fresh oil change, sounds just like this one. I have a Autel Maxisys Elite I'll try this on mine. Mine makes the noise at all RPMs but to me it doesn't sound like the "engine". I appreciate the video man!

Hi Glenn! Thanks for the very informative video and teaching. Now this is how a smart Tech troubleshoots! Isolate the noise/problem and narrow it down. But shop Techs don't care nor do they have the time, get em in and get em out (the shop foreman/boss says) and if you can't find the problem, tell the customer they need a new engine, lol) So many corrupt scammers out there. Hey brother, I have to do all my work myself, because the Toyota dealership from my tundra, I wouldn’t trust them for all the tea in China. If I had a mechanic around my area that was like you, I would trust them 100%, and have faith and their ability to properly diagnose, or repair any issues I had. Thank God above I don’t really have a lot of issues. I did catch the Toyota dealership not changing my oil filter. Isn’t that sad. You are a true inspiration that rejuvenates my faith in mechanics. Word-of-mouth will make or break you. If you were in my area, I would let you advertise on the back of my truck. Keep up the good work buddy.

Why can't I find people like this guy in the Denver area! I have a 2014 5.0 , 4 different shops and 4 different solutions for a #4 cold start misfires.

Seen a similar issue with a Mercedes engine involving moving plastic part's in its plastic intake system. The difference was, that engine was producing fault codes. None the less. Great diagnostics. Another win win for the customer.

Fantastic and informative video! Very same issue I have noticed on my 2017 F150 5.0 since 85k miles. Seemed to hear the noise more when cold outside and clearly something would "open" and click would disappear. Now with 169k one or both IMRC stuck closed with P2005/P2007 failure codes. This is the best diagnostic I have seen. With Ford now backordered with no delivery date on over 4800 pcs, this manifold is far from available, so considering a lockout option. If you sold a lockout kit with lockout tune, would be a great product link to this. I am manually searching options at the current time.

Great information. I’m one of the ones that bought an 18 F-150 5.0 in 2020 with 19,000 miles. It now has 37,000 miles. Noticed in burning about 1 quart of oil every 2500-3000 miles, noticed it smoking white smoke on startup and a rattle noise when letting off the throttle at around 2,000 RPMS or lower, you especially hear when in a parking garage or up near a Jersey barrier. Went thru 10,000 miles worth of consumptions test to tell Ford this isn’t right. As of last visit they just came back with right side spark plugs oil soaked, needs new short block and right side cylinder head.

Awesome video - I’m dealing with ford mechanics right now and they said I need a new engine because of the ticking sound.. I asked them where was the ticking sound coming from and what was causing it? They said without a complete engine teardown they could not tell me that only that it was at the bottom of the engine somewhere. I said you guys order brand new engines before you actually know what’s broken. He told me the noise was metallic sounding and I’d surely have tons of engine damage due to components grinding sending pieces of metal all through my engine leading to catastrophic failure …, I asked him where is all this metal going because there’s none on my oil drain plug or in my filter … end rant Thx for the awesome video, you have a new subscriber …..

My friend has 2018 F150 with 5.0. Had similar noises and what sounded like piston pin knock. They Ford Made repairs under warranty. Several months later noises came back , started using oil. Engine died He brought it back to dealership waiting for engine which is on back order. The 10 speed trans also has issues Nice video

You are an awsome mechanic! Had a 2011 f150 i bought like 6 years ago it was a beautiful truck 95,000 miles. Noticed a noise coming from passenger side fender area shop said i needed new engine. I had extended warranty so i said whatever put it in didnt cost me anything. Put new engine in and after awhile it did same thing and ive noticed all of them do it. So to say the least the shop was wrong. Truck ran fine and was a great truck. These engines can just be a little noisy sometimes.

Ford needs to put a recall in that manifold .. It's a bad engineering design for that manifold. People are told that they need a new engine when it's a manifold problem. Ford should see this video. Thanks Man .. Great Video 👍

You sir are an exceptional mechanic! I own a 2017 with a 5.0 and I’ve been worried about this sound since I purchased it. I just could not figure it out even with my stethoscope. Sometimes I also swear there’s a rod knock but not coming from the bottom end. I think the knock must be a cam phaser. It’s a spectacular engine but I suppose I’m just used to a traditional pushrod v8 that idles real quiet. The 5.0 has about 6 billion more moving parts so I suppose a little engine noise can be expected. Or maybe it’s a ticking time bomb? Guess we’ll find out down the road.

I'm a 20 year mechanic up in Canada, just started a new job with a fleet of ford 6.2s, 5.0s and 6.7s (60+ vehicles). Mostly worked on Cummins before here, so Ford isn't my specialty. This video will definitely help. Currently dealing with a 5.0 coyote with cylinder 8 misfire, narrowed it down to worn out valves. I suspect one of my other trucks has this intake runner issue.

Wish I could find mechanics as thorough out here in Southern California (Long Beach area).

My 2004 E350 Super Duty 5.4 2 valve engine with 180K is super quiet and can sit in the Florida 100 degree heat for hours idling if need be and not over heat. A really great engine and all I ever had to change was the oil and filter and plugs and coils. That's IT. These newer Ford engines scare me, I'm keeping my work van and will put another engine it if when it fails before I buy a new one.

that's crazy !! I sell a crap ton of Ford focus cars with the exact same issue. with the intake runner issues. when they snap they sound like a tap in the head .. so I buy All of them with a tap/ engine problem.just have to pull the vacuum hose off and plug it the sound should come and go as you disconnect and reconnect the vacuum hose fix the runner and it makes someone a great car 😊

You explain a noise at 10:30 that I experience on my 2019 F150 2.7L. This is the intake manifold runner too? Do I need to rush out and get it diagnosed / fixed or is it more of an annoyance? Great video and great explanation. Thank you!!!
