OK, so this started happening on my 2017 Raptor and i first though it was an exhaust leak or i damaged my vapor canister again. it sounded like gravel or wind noise or gears grinding. it's hard to believe it was all due to a cheap plastic parts.
So here is a Quick video on how to fix the IWE check valve grinding noise on the Ford F150.
Ford F-150's use a vacuum to keep the IWE front hubs disengaged in 2wd. Overtime the check valve that holds that vacuum can leak and you can hear the from hubs grinding as they half engage.
Side note, I'm not going to get into all the technical details as there are plenty of videos out there on it. If you want technical details I highly recommend you check out OZ mechanics KZfaq video Linked below. He has a great video with full details on how the hubs work on a 2005 truck. The system basically works the same on all modern F150's
• DIY How to test 4WD va...
Here are the part numbers. You an get just the check valve, but it costs about the same as the whole tube assembly.
Ford Part #FL3Z-3A788-B
parts.ford.com/shop/en/us/tub...
Valve is 7A788 on the Digram
Check Valve Only:
www.amazon.com/Motorcraft-YG3...
IMPORTANT NOTE: Keep in mind that the Valve is your first check. the problem could also be on the Solenoid and in worst case scenario, the lines and hubs could be damaged. Left alone long enough and you can damage your hubs.
Let me know if we got anything wrong (VERY LIKELY) and you have any questions in the comments below.

Glad we could help. Most dealers won’t start at the check valve. Service centers are a profit center for them. They would much rather do the bigger job than check the basics.

This problem only occurred to my 2015 F150 when the temperature was less than 32 degrees F. My mechanic was not able to reproduce the last time the truck was in the shop. I saw this video and decided to replace the check valve and solenoid valve. IT FIXED THE PROBLEM!!! Thanks for posting this video as it saved me some bucks and fixed the truck.

Follow up on previous comment, I got this part for 26$ at my local ford dealership they carried it in stock. Took me longer to open my garage door than it was to replace the part, I had it installed in a few minutes but kinda got nerves when I heard the air release outta the vacuum system when I took it off. Got the new one on, engaged my 4x4 back to 2x4 a few times to make sure everything was engaging and working correctly. Everything works and since then if put on about 1200 miles just running here and there allot of stop and goes and it’s never grind or tried to engage since. Awesome video and thank you. Saved me a shit ton of money going to a shop, never would have known this. You rock 🍻. Thanks again 💯🤙🏼

I thought the same thing, torque converter/tranny something but yeah it sounded bad. Crazy a dealership stocks this and it must be a common thing if ford carries it on hand. I live in a small town and they had it too. 26$ a few minutes install 1200 miles later of stop and goes running errands and no issues. Floors me this was the issue cause that grind from the vacuum system engaging sounded cringe😳😖. High five happy this worked for you too 💯🤙🏼

Driving my 2018 f150 3.5 ecobost the other day when an old Lincoln Town Car pulled up next to me. As we were driving I said to myself "boy that car sounds like S#@&". Well the Town Car took a turn and I could still hear the sound. I first thought it was blown turbos, talk about money. I got to work and did some research, found this video, and within 24 hours problem fixed. I took my check valve out and did blow in it in both directions and noticed it did not completely seal, so I had high hopes that was the issue. With my issue I did notice you can throttle down and control the grinding sound. My 20 mile commute it lasted a total of maybe a minute added up. With that said, once you are moving put it in 4 Wheel High and it should stop the issue until you can replace the check valve. Thanks for the video post.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 жыл бұрын
4wd clearing it is a clear sign it’s an IWE leak somewhere. Next step is to figure out from where. 99% of the time it’s the check valve. But it can also be the solenoid, lines, or the IWE bellow itself in the hubs.

I had the same noise and searched the internet for a solution and found your video. I purchased the part from ford (they wanted about $24 and got them to lower to $18.) The part fixed the problem and I am so thankful for your video. The noise was intermitted for a few weeks and about 1000 miles and wonder if there was could be any permanent damage.

Depending on how long you let it go, you can have permanent damage. I let mine go too long and eventually the bearing on the hub go out.

First of all... I LOVE YOU MAN! Was experiencing this exact problem. Thought it was my transmission, i would hear the noise then it felt like it was slamming into gear. But I noticed it was happening about 2000rpm in any gear. Then got in contact with a Ford tech, he told me to put it into 4WD while rolling about 50 mph and if the noise stopped it was my IWE( When the 4WD is engaged there is no need for the vacuum, so the grinding noise stops). I'm thinking, here goes $1.5k to $2k gone! So I KZfaqd it and found you once again! Thanks bro! Took me longer to get the part then it did to put it in! Whole assembly cost about $25 at the dealership near me. Keep it Dirty my man!

Easy way to check man. Put it in 4wd. If the noise goes away it IWE. Then it’s a matter of figuring out what components in the IWE is the problem and the first thing to check is the check valve

There is a whole process to check the IWE system. It could be lines, the diaphragm and the solenoid. The check valve is the first thing to check. Sounds like the dealer not be doing a thorough check.

Danny, I've had this problem for three years. I've changed the valve the solenoid and the actuator from the dealer. At first, I was getting a pulsating humming sound not all the time. The dealer just replaced the actuator two weeks ago and now it's f#cking worse than ever now on top of the humming noise I'm getting a grinding noise that I never had. It's F#cking frustrating.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like bearings and maybe even the IWE itself is failing. Grinding noise would be the IWE not engaging all the way, while humming would be bearings. Next step would be to check the IWE lines for leaks, then check the IWE baffle is moving correctly and not leaking. Then check the bearings themselves. I recently had my bearings replaced because they were humming. My issues were very obvious and easily replicated by the dealer so they were finally able to fix.

Awesome video man, I have a f150 lariat starting to make that horrible noise from time to time. No check lights display up and the truck seems to run great as performance wise. I notice mine more at gentle easy take offs or from time to wine on a slow turn while accelerating. It sounds harsh like hears grinding and it’s cringy. Thought it might be a torque converter or something but it’s m definitely giving this a shot cause it sounds like it is coming from the hub area.. I’ll keep ya posted but so happy I found this cause that’s a cheaper route than what I was thinking due to the sound.🤞🏼🤞🏼Thank you for posting this💯🤙🏼

Check valve is just your first step. If putting it in 4wd clears it, you may still have a leak somewhere in the IWE system. I could be the lines, or the bellow in the hub. Check the description for a link to another video that may help.

Just wanted to say THANK YOU! this was a great info for a non mechanic, I used to be able to tear down my Harley or work on my old Dodge PW 25yrs ago without any issues it was pretty simple, but these days with all the on board computers and stuff it gets very hard for guys like me to fix problems, I saved $165 today because that is what the dealer was going to charge me to "look at it" I went in for my maintenance (that is all prepaid) and my local dealer just seems like they are always trying to get in my wallet, I have bought 8 cars from Hansel Auto group in NorCal over the past 25 yrs, how about a little customer service? anyway, loved the video I replaced the part easily, I will definitely share this on my thread!

Happened to me multiple times. Dealer couldn't (replicate the problem). Saw a vid on KZfaq, but, it was too late for the hubs. Took it to a "good" dealer who knew what they were doing and got the hubs replaced (under warranty). I was told that the hubs were retail $570 per......Happened again in San Antonio and thank God for Red McCombs dealership. They knew right away what the root cause was. Fixed again for free.

Sucks you had to go thru this a few times. Most dealer never check, the check valve because they don’t get much from ford when it’s that. So they go for the bigger items that lay better. And in turn never solve the root cause and it continues to damage components. Very annoying how a $10 valve can cause so many problems

If the problem still persists after the valve is replaced, take a look at the lines. You may have a leak somewhere in the line. It’s a simple test using a brake bleeder kit. Check the video description for a quick video from OZ mechanic on how to do it.

I agree with you. But I think it comes down to simplicity. My take is that Fords system is soo simple and takes the load of the truck in such a simple manner that a fix would be more complicated than it’s worth. This hub design has been around for more than 10 yrs and Ford really sets the benchmark for trucks going offroad that I don’t think they want to mess it up.

Thanks for this.. having this issue with my brand new 2018 f150 4x4 v6 3.3L. Was towing my trailer to the Grand Canyon then after a few nights parked in a cold storm the truck started making this awful metal on metal grinding sound. I opened the hood and was able to push the connections around the solenoid in just a little bit more than they were and gonna test if that was it. If not I'll try buying this part and replacing it myself. Have an appointment with a dealership on Tuesday but know they're gonna try to milk me for cash and might not even tell me the real issue. Thanks again for this.

Definitely worth trying the fix, takes less than 5 min to do and only $8. A dealer may waste days troubleshooting waiting on parts to show. If the problem persists after swapping you know it’s more serious and you’ll need warranty to fix it.

DirtDays makes sense might do the same that sound is so awful. Does Ford know about this issue or what? I've seen forum threads on the f150 forums dating back to 2011 of people having this issue with 4 wheel drive either check valves or vacuum issues. Insane to me that I could buy a brand new 2018 f150 4x4 and have to replace the check valve at 12,000 miles. Never seen anyone from Ford acknowledge this and it seems like they haven't really fixed it?

Also clunked once in reverse when wheels were turned to the right (2WD mode). I am not getting the resistance I normally get when I turn the wheels hard in 4WD and sometimes it doesn't even seem to engage. I have no idea where to start with this as it seems like multiple issues. Any ideas? This truck has been a nightmare for me.

Russell Williams yeah it sounds like it’s the IWE. Remember that the system uses a vacuum to keep the IWE hubs disconnected. If the vacuum is not there or has a leak the hubs are not completely disconnected. If you having a hard time getting out of 4wd you may have a major leak somewhere. You first step is to check and replace the valve. But considering you issue, you may have a leak in one of the lines or one of the bellows at the hub.

I had a sudden grinding driving home. I found the vaccume line had become brittle and disintegrate from the T connection on top the driver side strut mount to the solenoid. I replaced the solenoid, the check valve and used a 3/16 od hose from fleetfarm to replace the damaged section as ford did not have this in stock. No more crazy grind but now I have a similiar noise under slight load, I think my actuator and or hub took damage and need to be replaced, maybe even the entire vaccume line. gonna dive into that tomorrow.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad Жыл бұрын
Yeah, make sure there is no more leaks in the system and the last step is to check the IWE bellows. If you have to replace the IWE, also inspect the hub bearings. The shavings from damaging the IWE can get in there and damage them.

No, IWE noises are directly tied to movement of the truck as it involves the front wheel hubs. Any noise while idle would be engine related. Possibly a pulley or a pump or something like that directly tied to the engine.

Vacuum line leak, solenoid failing, could be that water got in the solenoid and sucked water to the hub actuator and now it's full of water. Start with leak testing the vacuum lines or just replace the vacuum lines. They're not that expensive and new is going to last longer anyways. While you're at it, replace the solenoid... if that all fails, it's probably the hub actuator. Start cheap and go expensive. :)

I bought a Brad new check valve with the lines assembly. Sadly this didn’t work for my truck. Could the new one I installed be bad as well?
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 8 ай бұрын
No, it would be extremely rare for a check valve to show up bad. Also keep in mind this is the first step in the troubleshooting process. IWE system also includes a check of the solenoid, check the lines for leaks and finally check the IWE bellow itself on the hubs for leaks. The reason you start with the check valve is because it’s the cheapest, smallest, and most likely failure point. Dealers service centers usually skip it because there is no money in replacing it. There is a video linked in the description with how to check the rest of the items I would recommend checking out next. And don’t let it go too long because the shavings from the IWE not engaging properly due to the vacuum leak can damage the hubs if left untreated.

I changed the valve as you recommended. Seemed to do the trick, but when in 2WD braking with the wheel turned to the right going about 2 mph I get a slight grinding noise. Doesn’t happen in 4wd. Does it just take some time for the pressure to build bake up?
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 5 жыл бұрын
The pressure would build back up right away. If your still having problems, the leak could be elsewhere. Could be in the solenoid or in one of the lines. If the grinding noise has been going on for a while, you may also have problems with the IWE bellow or even the bearings on the hubs. In the video descriptions there is a video link on how to check those components. If you under warranty, definitely it’s time to take it in and have them take a look
