local mechanic told my daughter the stiff gear change is caused by cracked synchronisers and she needs a new gearbox. £1200. after googling the symptoms we found this. we are not mechanics but followed the video and 2 hours later problem solved! thank you Cyd

Awesome, I love reading comments like yours. Thing is, that garage owner could have done the same research. £1200 seems very steep. You could have had a new clutch and a good 2ndhand box refitted for about half that.

Thanks for making this video. I’ve been able to apply this fix to a 5 speed 2015 mark 8 Fiesta with 70k miles. It only presented the issue exiting 2nd gear, normally after a long steep uphill climb. It would be the shift back to neutral that was very stiff, it would easily take all other forward gears in these cases. I used a pillar drill to bore out the phosphor bronze bush with a 12.2 mm bit. Upon reassembly with high temperature grease, I can confirm the issue is no longer present, even after some hard 2nd gear climbs. A notable difference on the mk 8 is that you will need to remove the gear selection sensor magnet and unplug the connector. The magnet sits next the rubber boot, removal is with a T30 Torx.

Further to my previous comment: Following on from your excellent video, I have just done the job on my Fiesta and it went exactly as you explained it. I did deviate slightly: I found it better to insert the small, square nylon type bush on the small ball joint at the rear, once greased up, then just slide it into the square hole on the end of the selector rod so didn't need to use grips. Other then that, I followed your vide step by step! Many thanks! :)

Would you be able to do a gearbox oil change video for the Mk6 Fiesta please? Most of the IB5 gearboxes don't have a drain plug and the official method is to suck the oil out through the filler hole. There is a nut below the filler nut which can be removed to drain most of the which a lot of people have had success with but its apparently not advised as it can cause issues if it doesn't go back in right. But I'm guessing you know all this. I wouldn't want to remove a drive shaft to drain the oil. Cheers.

Just came across your video and I think I found the solution to my weird problem! I drive a fiesta just like that and 80% of the time the gear changing is super easy cause all I drive is 5 miles to work and back! But on long journeys especially when there’s a lot of inclines having to rev the car more than normal! The gear changing becomes a lot stiffer and sometimes needing a little bit of force to get into gear! But there is no gear crunching or grinding sounds! Could this be the solution?
