Here is my mk1 Fiesta Popular Plus, with the optional 1.1 engine
I hadn't started it in a while, and it took sometime to get fuel to the carb.
This is currently my daily car, as you can see in the video it was undergoing work at the time [April 2010].
Please excuse the ferret that is charging my battery, he is a bit squeaky!

I miss these sort of sounds on a cold morning. If you walked past a car in the 90s on the way to school you could taste the petrol

Back in the day, when a good car was defined by if it would (eventually) start in the morning. Nowadays a good car is one that links apple car play within 5 seconds of turning it on.

Just around the corner from this garage was a Peugeot 205 that a lady owned. Used to love watching her cold start it in the morning while I waited for the bus to school. It always used to stall :)

+michael jagger My aunt had a mk1 Renault 5 1.1 that hated starting on a cold damp mornings. my mother had a mk1 0.9 fiesta and a Mk2 fiesta 1.1, both which hated cold starting on a damp morning but my own MK2 1.1 which was my first car had electronic breaker-less ignition so at least it would usually start first time even if left for a week or so.
@jaggass
@jaggass 8 жыл бұрын
Benjamin Smith Electronic ignition is much better than points ignition. No points can wear out and its maintenance free. My grandma had a 1988 burgundy MK2 Fiesta 1.1 popular plus in the early 90's before she died don't know it had points ignition or electronic ignition as i was only a kid but i do remember it prettywell. It was immaculate and very reliable. My neighbour had a MK2 1.0 that hated the damp or cold on average it took 5 mins to get going.

hope you had a great Christmas. I love Fords even more now. got a brand new kuga it did well where I live near Sheffield, S yorks flew up the steepest hills no skidding sliding or anything brilliant. casting my mind back the first ford I remember was we had a 1990 ford orion in the early 90's from new use to call it onion only like 5 or 6 then mk2 H reg 1.4 that flew and never broke down shame we swapped it for a rover 214si got scrapped after a year shocking. we have had loads of fords they never fail to disappoint you. a Capri mk3 or Cortina MK5 Ive got to have one. and of course an old mk2 fiesta like my grandma had miss her very much. it would be a lovely weekend car. old fords were so easy to maintain

Sitting low, I like it, was it chopped or aftermarket? Mine you can just about get your shoe between the gap but that's because the stock springs are that worn so it looks a little lowered, though you can shake the hell out of it with how soft it is. dampers very most likely gone also.
@xr2james

It was chopped aftermarket stuff! But when I had it on the road I used GAZ coilovers and short springs on the rear :)

***** Hello, I don't have the car anymore, I sold it a year ago. I may have pictures, and if not I have a Haynes manual. Either way, on mine the positive wire had a ballast resistor thus making it obviously the positive. The wire from the distributor [think it was black] goes to the negative.

Do get yourself one, they're going to go up in value, I was about to settle for a mk2 as mk1's have gone up in price quite a bit in the last year but found one luckily, BUT I am jealous of how cheap parts are for a Mk2 lol, what needs doing to my mk1 will cost about £1250, for a mk2... about £200 probably but you'd have to find quite a rusty one to need to do what mine needs, two front wings for a mk1, about 350 if you can find them... for a mk2, about £70 with postage brand new, the whole front facia for a mk1, another 350 easily, if you can find one... a mk2, I think I recall around £50 brand new. Don't let anything put you off though, they're great cars, have a great following, and for damn sure are rarer than a mk1 or mk2 escort at any car show. No joke, I've only seen about 3 mk2 fiesta's at car shows, about 3 while I'm out and about, and literally only seen 5 mk1 fiesta's ever in person (not including mine) but only at shows.

***** Truly great cars, if insurance is not a pain (most likely will be) then I'll defo scoop a mk2
@Papa7Bravo
@Papa7Bravo 7 жыл бұрын
+iEldilo nah insurance is cheap, depending on the company it will be really cheap or be about the same as a normal first car if it makes sense? I'm seeing people pay quite literally half of what I'm quoted through I think admiral, footman jack or something, and I think aviva, but basically look at some companies that aren't on comparison websites, for my 957cc mk1 I was quoted about 2200 on confused.com but there are plenty who got cheaper by going directly to some companies.
@Papa7Bravo
@Papa7Bravo 7 жыл бұрын
+iEldilo also you gotta remember that getting a mk2 even will be an investment as they will be worth much more soon as mk1s are getting harder to get and prices going right up so next thing people will get is a mk2.

As much as I love my Caddy, I'd hate to use it as my daily driver. I couldn't afford the gas! LOL It's also tricky to find that thin line between needing more gas/pumping and being flooded, isn't it? I don't always get that right....and I always err on the side of pumping it more. hahaha

When was the last time we saw one of these cars on the road?! Sounds like the battery was low & the fan belt needed tensioning hearing that screeching away when the engine did eventually start although not a good idea to rev the engine excessively after a cold start as this will hasten wear in engine due to oil pressure building up! Looks like you burning oil too typical Ford engine! Nice to see a Mk1 Ford Fiesta Popular Plus up & running all the same hope this is still on the road!

Matthew Lovell Last one I see on the road was this one!Battery was low as it had been sitting ages, hence the lack of fuel in the carb, and the excessive cranking to draw the fuel up the lines. Alternator belt was indeed a bit loose ;)I know not to over rev a cold engine, I don't think it was excessive. Just trying to clear the cylinders and not let it stall.No idea if its still on the road, I sold it last year. Although strangely I was wondering this myself today

This car should NOT have taken 7 or 8 attempts to get it to start. Set the choke and pump the gas a couple times before you crank the engine! Maybe you need to charge the battery or replace it!
@xr2james
@xr2james 2 жыл бұрын
No it shouldn't have, and it always started first time when I was actually using the car. It had sat for several weeks, unused, therefore had no fuel in the carb. It simply took several cranks to draw some fuel up. Full choke, and one pump as enough when run daily, and maybe a tickle of the throttle. Pointless charging/ replacing the battery as I sold the car 7 years ago, and it had a fairly new battery at the time, although obviously slightly discharged in the video.
